Holiday Traditions

“You get more joy out of giving joy to others” Eleanor Roosevelt

When our twin daughters were about 4 years of age, we started taking them shopping a few days before Christmas so that they could pick out a gift for one another. My husband takes one child, and I take the other, and we try to avoid each other in the toy aisles of Target or at the toy store. The girls each choose a gift for their sister. Jim texts me from the next aisle over to check that the gift is not something I already bought. When we get home, they can’t wait to wrap their surprises. We each take a child in a separate room for this next step in the process. They carefully tag the gifts and put them under the tree. They are very excited about their secrets and have never spoiled the surprise. On Christmas morning with all of the gifts and activity, they are most excited to share the gifts they have picked and wrapped for each other. They are always gracious with hugs, thank yous and kind words. For weeks, months, and even years later, they are proud of the gifts they have given and remember what they received from their twin. They are already asking when they can shop for one another. I think one of the key tips for pulling the secret off is waiting until just a few days before Christmas to shop so that they aren’t as tempted to spoil the surprise. This Christmas tradition has really made our Christmas morning that much more special and it proves that Eleanor Roosevelt was right, “You get more joy out of giving joy to others.”

Despite the mess it may cause, getting your kids in the kitchen can be great fun for the whole family. Experts say picky eaters are more likely to eat and try new foods if they have helped in some way to prepare it. It also teaches an important life skill and provides great family time. Homemade Applesauce Recipe from Kids Cooking: A Very Slightly Messy Manual by the editors of Klutz 4 medium apples ¾ cup water ¼ cup sugar (white or brown) cinnamon, a few shakes a pan a grown-up assistant with a knife 1. The hardest part is cutting and coring the apples. You can peel them if you like (up to you), but you should cut

them into quarters and then cut out the seeds and stems. You might call in your assistant for this. 2. Put the cut-up apples, sugar, cinnamon and water in to the pan. 3. Cover and cook at medium heat (simmering) for 15-20 minutes. 4. Let the apples cool, then mash them with a fork or potato masher.

ADULT HOLIDAY PARTY Contact: Kelly Carter & Cyndi Rizzo The 2013 Adult Holiday Party will be on December 29th at 5pm at Dave & Busters in Destiny USA/Carousel Mall. The cost is $24 per person. BIG SISTERS Contact: Amanda Fosberg We offer a "Big Sister" to paid MMM members that are pregnant and/or are new moms of multiples during the first 3 months after giving birth. We pair you up with a member that has multiples like you have (or will have). The idea is for the big sister to check in with her little sister often— to offer support, advice, help, etc. as needed. Then she reports to the group at each meeting on how her "little sister" is doing. The little sister can also contact her big sister as needed. Please contact Amanda to get hooked up with a "big sister" today! If your multiples are over a year old and are interested in becoming a “big sister” contact Amanda today.
