THE ANCHOR OF ALPHA SIGMA TAU

Our Sorority _8 NOTHER successful year has been added to the eventful history of r\ Alpha Sigma Tau, and we begin a new year determined to bring still

closer to perfection those aims for which we are all striving. It has been especially gratifying this year to have such high efficiency

as is recorded on the following efficiency chart . This is the first year that every collegiate and alumnre chapter ha sent in its annual report, thus enabling the national president to prepare complete and comprehen ive reports of membership , efficiency, and activities.

The three new chapters installed last year have functioned plendidly. Chi chapter at Shepherdstown, We t Virginia, is to be especially commended for winning the efficiency award, sending a fine song to the national song book committee, and for preparing and delivering a half hour radio broadcast concerning the activities of Alpha Sigma Tau.

Dorothy Canfield in T!te Squinel Cage ha said something that all organizations need to ponder upon ; 'The trouble with many of us is that we just slide along in life. If we would only give, just once the same amount of reflection to what we want to get out of life that we give to the question of what to do with a two weeks' vacation, we would be tartled at our false standards am! the aimless procession of our busy days."

There are three phases of our work that need careful consideration- life membership, chapter response to national directions, and emphasis on the cultural aims of the sorority.

Last year the report showed 344 life members and this year 3 70. The gain of twenty-six members is good but it is only one-eighth a much as it should be. The reason behind the failure of members to continue payments needs to be found and removed. It is a problem largely for each alumnre representative and her collegiate chapter.

The plan was started this year of having each alumnre representative visit her collegiate chapter three times a year. Thi s procedure is helping the chapter officers to understand their duties better and to carry out their national obligations more effectively. Many gi rls are active members only two years and some only one so that they do not have time to become thoroughly acquainted with the sorority before being asked to hold office. Thi year we want to work out a still closer contact of the collegiate members with the a!umnre so that the experience of the alumnre can be still more available to the newer girls. Better pledge training and a shortening of the length of pledgeship are also to be studied.

Appreciable progress was made this year in the attempt of chapt rs to hold cultural program at the clo e of their bu ine meeting. The programs

Page 5: 1941 October ANCHOR

worked out by the national chairman were splendid , and the precedent thus established of having each chapter follow the same plan of study.

As in previous years1 it has been a pleasure to work for Alpha Sigma Tau. There is a fine feeling of sincere friendship evidenced among chapters and national workers. To belong to an organization which promotes friendship and ideals is an inspiring experience today since in so many parts of the world there exists the opposite conditions. From the writings of Carl Schurz we read: " Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But, like the seafaring men on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them reach your destiny."

In the coming year may all Alpha Sigma Taus be very conscious of their ideals and come closer to them than they ever have.

CARRIE W. STAEHLE, National President

EFFICIENCY

A calendar is sent out each year from the Central Office giving a chart of the sorority's activities and the dates upon which reports and letters are due.

In the following tables, on time counts 2; late, 1; and not sent, 0. There are four issues of THE ANCHOR but chapters were required to

send material only to two instead of three since one issue was the directory number. If, therefore, the required material was sent two times punctually the score is 4. Six letters should have been sent to the Central Office making a perfect score of 12.

Chapters should remember that if an extension of time is needed, national officers are always willing to grant it and will not count reports late if they are sent as promised.

The perfect score for collegiate chapters is 42; for alumnce 2 6.

THE DIRECTORY

A three-way alumnre directory is kept by the Central Office as follows: The initiation list of each collegiate chapter as copied from the green

suede notebooks. The names of new initiates are added. each year. The statistical list of the alumnre of each collegiate chapter which is

arranged alphabetically by the maiden names. Dates of initiation and graduation, scholarship and sorority examination grades, married names, deaths, alumnre chapter affiliation, and life memberships are recorded.

The mailing list arranged alphabetically by chapters gives each member's full name and present address. This is used when sending the alumnre representatives' news letters.

For the first time a complete and correct chart showing our membership can be presented . The national president is indebted to the alumnre representatives for helping obtain the data for this report .

THIRD DISTRICT- Do1'othy Robinson

1. District Meeting: With the very efficient help of the local chapter and others I arranged for and conducted the second triennial meeting at Conway, Arkansas, in -ovember, 1940.

2. Expansion: I corresponded with prospects at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and at Tahlequah, Oklahoma ; and visited the campus at Springfield, Missouri . The Springfield situation looks promising. We hope to know definitely by this fall.

3. Efficiency in District: Because some chapters in our district were rather low in efficiency, I wrote a " pep talk" letter to spur them on. It worked, but it was pretty late in the season. This year we are going to start at the beginning! On the other hand our collegiate chapter, Iota, won the award for the year before. We have a record to live up to!

THE REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATION SORORITIES REPRESE TATIVE

EDITH L. MANSELL

The biennial meeting of the Council of the Association of Education Sororities was held in Denver on July 14-16, 1941. Mrs. Staehle and I were present, and we were happy to have several of our alumnre who live in or near Denver attend several of the meetings and ocial affairs. One subject discussed was "What Constitutes an Active Chapter?" It was decided that if a chapter has as few as two members for more than two consecutive years it must be dropped from the roll. Another topic along this arne line was that of mutual co-operation of all chapters on a campus so that the stronger chapters will help strengthen the weaker ones. The idea behind this is that the sorority system as a whole will gain from having strong chapters in every sorority; that since at some time or other we have each had weak chapters we should be willing to do for the present weak chapters what we would that the strong chapters should do for us when we are weak. A discussion of the place of the sororities in defense work was concluded by arrangements to buy a $100 defense bond.

Pi Kappa Sigma reinstated its chapter at Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, in the fall of 1940 and Alpha Sigma Alpha installed at Dickinson, North Dakota. All A.E.S. sororities have recently received petitions from local groups at Mt. Pleasant, and Delta Sigma Epsilon has received one from Springfield, Missouri.

I have gone to Ypsilanti to visit the Alpha chapter a couple of times, taking along some Theta girls. The usual Association of Education Sororities correspondence has been taken care of.

THE REPORT OF THE NATIONAL EDITOR

MARY LouiSE DoYLE

During the school year 1940-1941, THE ANCHOR, our national quarter-ly, was published as follows:

Vol. XVI, No. 1 October, 1940 ...... 24 pages $ Vol. XVI, o. 2 December, 1940 .... 32 pages Vol, XVI, o. 3 March, 1941 ..... .. 84 pages Vol. XVI, No . 4 June, 1941 . ....... 40 pages

131.64 208.13 553.59 268.72

180 pages $1,162.08*

The March 1941 number was our second directory of Alpha Sigma Taus. Because of the size of the magazine and the nature of the material therein, this issue cost almost as much as the other three issues of the year added together. However, the directory is only published triennially and the added expense incurred is partly made up in THE ANCHOR budget in the course of three years.

THE REPORT OF THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE

MARY ALICE SELLER

During September and October as chairman of the ritual committee I completed the plans for new typically Greek robes and crowns for initiation and supervised the making of a sample set of robes, which was displayed at three of the district meetings.

Before resigning from the presidency of the Third District I made tentative plan of the Conway meeting. Later I attended this meeting and took part in the program.

I accepted the program committee chairmanship in November and supplied material and suggestions for the programs from December through June.

The plan used for averaging the grades gives 1.000 as a perfect score. * The above averages that are starred are based on only one semester

of work either because they were in college but one semester or becau~e they were members fo r only one semester. The others are based on a fu1l year of work.

Margaret Shockey of Chi chapter had a perfect score fo r the first semester and only one B, in a one semester hour course, in the second semester, thus winning the scholarship ring for this year.

Annetta Albright had a perfect score the first semester and one B, in a three semester hour course in the second semester.

Dorothy Sheasley received a perfect rating the first semester but received three B grades totaling seven semester hours in the second semester.

Chi chapter having the highest average of all of the chapters will be awarded the Scholarship Cup.

The attendance at the district meetings was lower than it was three years ago because the meetings were held in cities wherein fewer alumn<e lived. The results however were not lssened, and the national consciousness of the members who attended the meetings vvas greatly trengthened. The new robes, candlesticks, seals, and membership cards were displayed and explained to the girls. At the business meetings discussions were held on Rushing, Efficiency, Social Service, Comparison of Alpha Sigma Tau with other sororities, Life Membership, and Expansion. An article written by Mrs. Staehle reviewing the history of Alpha Sigma Tau since 1899 wa. read at all the meetinas.
