SUNDAY NOV 6, 2016 Remembrance Sunday

10:00 a.m.

Worship Service of Remembrance

Prelude: Adagio in G Minor Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni

Announcements and Welcome The National Anthem: O Canada

Call To Worship: Pirie: Remember Ypres, Gallipoli, the Somme, Mons and Verdun.

Remember the Western Desert, El Alamein, the Normandy beaches. Remember Coventry, Dresden, Hiroshima and the Burma Road. Remember Korea, the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, the Balkans, East Timor, Afghanistan and the Gulf.

Cong: Remember the courage, the comradeship, the ingenuity, the spirit of working together for a common cause, the planning together for a better world that would come with peace.

Pirie: Remember the call to arms, the patriotic songs, the partings which were such sweet sorrow, the sound of the drum, the skirl of the pipe, the prayer that God would be on our side.

Cong: Remember the carnage; the colossal horror of war. Remember the widows of sixty years and more, the old men and women who never knew their fathers.

Pirie: Remember the love that was lost, the wisdom wasted, minds that are still pained by memories.

Cong: Remember the families bereft by recent wars and conflict. Pirie: Remember this day the children who will die while nation fights

nation. Remember the One who asked us to remember them. Cong O God, remember us and them; and forgive us our sins against

you and our fellow man.

Lighting the Peaceful Candle of Christ and children’s presentation of their wreaths

All: Today we light the Christ Candle as a beacon of hope through

the blackness of war. We let it shine out to the world that even though we have not yet figured out how to live in peace as Jesus taught us. We have his light to at least light the way. Be with us we pray, as we follow the light into tomorrow, as we follow the path Christ taught us to follow.

(Children bring forward the wreaths).

Opening Prayer: Pirie: Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be

parted, either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day.

Cong: Fulfil in us, as in them, the purpose of your love; and bring us all to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pirie: Lord God of the nations, whose sovereign rule brings justice and peace, have mercy on our broken and divided world.

Cong: Pour out your peace into the hearts of all so that all races and peoples may learn to live as members of one family in obedience to your law, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thank you Sharon LaForme with the 4 year olds – grade 2 and Bill and Marion Douglas with the grade 3 – 8 in the Sunday School this morning. Thank you to Kailey MacMillan for sharing her gift of music on trumpet today. We are so fortunate in our congregation to have many people with very specific talents and further fortunate that they are willing to share these talents with us. One of these people by the name of Susan Elliott has once again stepped forward to help the Worship Team and the Renovation Team solve a problem . The choir risers needed a modesty curtain and when asked, Susan quickly came up with a solution, shopped for the material (and found it on sale in Newton) then proceeded to make the curtain and install it in less than a week. The Worship Team says thank you Susan and you are now an honorary member of the Worship Team. Jocelyn Miller, Chair, Worship Team

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
