WHERE ARETHE DEAD?"For David is not ascended iato the heeee:""And no man hath ascended up to heave1l, buthe that came doum from 'heaven, even the Sonof Man."-Acts 2;29-~4.; John 3:I3.

FOR a man to dedarehimse!.f uninterestedin this subject would" be to proclaim him-. self idiotic, thoughtless. If the ordinary af-fairs of this present life-food, raiment,!:inance, politics, etc ..-which concern us but fora few years, are. deemed worthy of thought, study, how much more concern should we- have:in respect to, the eternal futu re? .Of course so important a question, has had themost profound study, ever since the reign atsin and death- began, six thousand years ago. Bythjs time the su.bject should be threadbare. Theentire world should be so thoroughly informedrespecting this question that there would benothing new to say and nobody curious to hear. But the large audiences of intelligent, thoughtfull?eopie who come. to hear, and who listen withbreathless interest to what we have to ~ay, implythat, after all the study the subj ect has had, butfew are thoroughly satisfied with their conclusions. The Agnostic Answers the QUestionBefore presenting \vhat we claim is the Scrip:tural and only satisfactory answer to our query,we thinkIt but prope.r respect to the-intelligenceand thought of our day and of past centuries to.make general inquiries 011 the. subject and to havebefore our minds the most prpfound thoughts of

WHERE .liRE THE DlfJADi 3the most astute thinkers of our race. 'vVe cannot, however, go into this matter elaborately and givelengthy quotations. We must content ourselveswith brief, synoptical answers, which will bestated kindly and truthfully, with a desire not tooffend anybody, however much we may disagreewith his conclusions. We recognize the right ofevery man to do. his own thinking and to reachhis. own cqnclusions, whether these agree withour conceptions or not.We begin our examination - by asking ouragnostic friends, who boast .of their untrammeledfreedom of thought: What say you, Free-think-ers, in reply to our query, Where are the dead?Their answer is; "'yVe do 110t know. We would'like to believe in a future life, but we have noproof .of it. Lacking the evidences our conclusionis that man dies as does the brute beast. If our. conclusion disappoints your expectations in re-spect to having joy for the saints, it certainlyshould be comforting to all as respects the vastmajority of our race, who certainly would bemuch better off perished like the brute beast thanto be preserved in torture, as the rna] ority believe,'''

We thank 0111' agnostic friends' for the cour-teous -reply, but feel that the answer is not satis-factory, either to our heads or to our hearts. These cry out that there must, or should be, afuture life; .that the Creator made man with'powers of mind. and heart so superior to thebrute that his pre-eminence in tlie .divine planshould' be expected. Furthermore, the brevity ofthe present Iife, its tea rs, its sorrows, its exper-iences, its lessons, will nearly all be valueless, useless, unless there be a future life-an oppor-tunity for making use of these lessons. _We mustlook further for a more satisfactory answer. The Heathen Answer to Our QuerySince three-fourth of the world is heathen theweight of numbers implies that they next should beasked for their solution to the problem, Where arethe dead? Heathenism gives two general answers:(r) Prominent are those which hold to trans-

These reply to us: "Our'view is thatwhen a man dies, he does not die, but merelychanges his form, His future estate will corr e-spend to his present living and give him either ahigher or a lower position. We believe that welived. on earth before, ~perhaps as cats, dogs, mice, elephants, or what not, and that if the present lifehas been wisely used, we may reappear as men ofnobler talents, as philosophers, etc.; -but if! asusual, life has been misspent, at deat'h we sha I beremanded to some Jower form of being." .(2) The other large class of heathen believe ina spirit world with happy hunting grounds forthe good and a hell of dHferent torments for thewicked. We are told that when ~people seem todie they really become more alive than ever, anathat the very minute they cross the river Styxthey go to the realms of either the blessed or theever doomed, and that there are steps or degreesof punishment and reward. We inquire, "Wheredid you receive these views'?" Tile answer is,"They have been with us for a long, long time.We know not where they came .from, Our learnedmen have handed them down, to us as truths, and we have accepted them as such:'But heathenism's answer is not satisfactory toour heads and hearts. We must look further. We must not trust to speculation: We must lookfor divine revelation, the message from him With -whom we have to do-our Creator. The CathoJiG Answer to -Our QUestion'Turning ~from heathenism 'W e address our ques-tion to that intelligent one-fourth of the world's. population known as Christendom. vVe say, Chris-tendem, what is. your answer to the question? The reply is, "We are divided in our opinion, more than two-thirds of us holding the Catholicand nearly one-third the general Protestant-view."Let us then hear the Catholic view (Greek and.Roman) first: for age, as well as numbers, suggests such precedence: .Catholic friends, give us; please, the results ofyour labors and studies, the conclusions of your

WHERE. ARJlJ TIlE DEAD! 6ablest thinkers andtheologians, in respect to theRevelation which you claim to have from God onthis subject, Where are the dead? We will hearyou thoughtfully, patiently, unbiasedly. OurCatholic friends respond: "Our teachings arevery explicit along the lines of your question. Wehave canvassed the subject from every standpointin the light of divine Revelation. Our conclusionand teaching are that when anyone dies, he goesto aile of three places. First, the saintly, of whomwe claim there are but a few, go immediately tothe presence of God, to heaven. These few saintly;ones do' not include our clergy, nor ourbishops, cardinals and popes.; for you will findthat when any of these die, it is a custom of thechurch that masses be said for the repose of theirsouls. We would not say masses for any we be-lieve to be in heaven; fop there surely is reposefor every soul. Neither would we say masses forthem if we believed them to be in eternal hell.;for masses could not avail them there, We. mightremark, however, that we do not teach that manygo to the eternal hell, It is our "teaching thatonly incorrigible heretics-persons who have hada full knowledge of. Catholie doctrines and whohave wilfully and .deliberately opposed' them-these alone meet the awful, hopeless fate."The dead in general, according to our teaching, pass immediately to purgatory, which is, as thename indicates, a place of purgation from sin, aplace of penances, sorrows, woes, anguish indeed,

but not hopeless, The period of confinement heremay be centuries or thousands of years, accord-ing to the deserts of the Individualand the alle-viations granted. The vast majority .are there. The billions of the heathens 'are there; for .ignor-ance does not save, does not qualify for the heav-enly condition. All who enter- heaven must 'pre-viously have been fitted and prepared in a. man-ner impossible to the heathen, Millions of Prot-estants are there. They could not enter heaven, except through the portals of the Catholic church;neither would God deem them worthy of eternal

6 WHERJj] ARE THE DEAmhell; for their rejection of Catholicism was dueto the confession of faith under which they wereborn and environed. Nearly an Catholics go~ topurgatory also; for notwithstanding the' good-offices of our church, our koly loyater, confessions;masses, holy candles, consecrated burying ground, etc., nevertheless, not having attained t o saintshipof character, they would be excluded from heaven.until the distressing experiences of purgatorywould prepare their hearts for heaven. We hold, however; that for the reason stated, Catholicswill not need J :O remain ~as long in' purgatory a swill the Protestants and the heathen."'vVe can thank our Catholic friends for so kinda statement of their case. W6 shall not ask themwher-e their purgatory is, nor how they obtainthe details of information respecting it ~ for suchquestions might offe1l.d them," and we have nodesire to offend. We merely wish for theirripest; clearest,' maturest thought respecting ourquestion. W~ regret to say that the answer isnot all that we might have hoped for in clearness, reasonableness and Scripturalness .. Neither ourheads nor OU I " heart's are yet satisfied, It cannotbe wrong to look for something better.

The Protestant Answer to OUI" QuestionI class myself as a Protestant without therebymeaning any disrespect to anybody else. I assumethat the majority of my readers are Protestants.I remind yon that many of us in times past havebeen inclined to boast a little of Protestant"breadth of lPind," "intelligence," "education,"etc. May we not reasonably expect from Protes-tants a clear, logical, satisfactory answer -to OUI'question? Having found all the other answersunsatisfactory, and having now .come to the one-twelfth portion of our race which has had mostadvantage every way, we might reasonably expectto find in its answer the quintessence of wisdomand proof from every quarter and from everyage. But what do we" find, dear friends? Withshame.I say it, We find the very reverse 1 We findthe voice of Protestantism as a whole (bar-

WHERE ARE THE DE-AD? 7'-ring numerically insignificant denominations) giv-ing the most absurd answer to my question thatcculd be conceived-s-an answer which is put toshame by the- Catholics, the heathen and the ag-- nostics, Is not this marvelous? _vVe got our name Protestants from the factthat our intelligent, well-meaning forefathers, whowere Catholics, thought that they discovered in-

consistencies and unscripturalness in Catholicdoctrines in wbich they had been reared. Theyprotested against these, and hence came the nameProtestants. vVe cannot defend all that they did totheir enemies nor all that-their enemies did to them. One of their points of protest was that ourforefathers could find. nothing of purgatory any-where on earth, nor any declaration respecting it.in the Bible. With a simplicity that is certainlymarvelous to us, tb~y concluded .that they wouldmerely pick up their views of purgatery andthrow them away forever. This left them heavenand hell, into one of which, they said, every mem-bel' of the race must go at death and there spendhis eternity. The theory of' Calivn and Knoxprevailed at that time amongst Protestants and,led each denomination to hope that' it was God's"elect" and would go to heaven, while all theremainder of mankind would be consigned to aneternity of hellish torture. Both Catholics and Protestants, looking backto that period which we often term the dark ages,-have' reason to give thanks to God for the anoint-ing of the eyes o r our understanding, which en-ables tis, we believe, to think more logically thanour forefathers. Even those of us reared underthe doctrine of predestination have lest the ideathat the heathen were passed by because theywere predestinated to darnnation : instead, thosewho accepted the Westminster Confession ofFaith ani: today the most zealous in. the preachingof the Gospel amongst the heathen by missionaryeffort. We are glad of this. It is a sign 'that ourhearts are in truer and nobler condition, eventhough our heads are not yet properly aq.justed.

8 - WHERE ARE THE DEAD?J:heoreticaJly, Protestant doctrines stand with

the Bible and with Catholics and declare thatheaven is a place of perfection; that there C.3nbe no change to any who enter there; hencethat all trial, all refinement, all chiseling, all pol-ishing of character must be accomplished in ad-vance of an entrance into the abode of the saints. In a word, we agree that only the saints will everenter there, the "pure in 'heart," the "over-comers," the "little flock," who ~ow walk in tilefootsteps of Jesus. What about the remainder ofmankind? Ah! there is the difficulty. The Best of People Perplexed

, Our creeds perplex us; for, as our hearts will _not permit us to think of these poor creaturesgoing to an eternity. of misery, neither will ourheads permit us to say that they are fit forheaven. - Indeed it would be at variance not onlywith the Scripture, hut also with reasonitseif,to suppose heaven with three- fourths of its in-habitants unregenerate in every sense of theword. Our .forefathers merely spoiled things for\1 S when they threw away purgatory and kept theremainder of the arrangement. I we must ob-ject to purgatory as being unscriptural, mus t wenot equally object to the eternal torment of allthe families of the earth as being un scriptural, especially when the Bible declares that

WHERE .ARE THE DEAlJ? 9"little flock," theI'elect." Love and Justice -wereleft out of this calculation. (2) 'The other prom-inent Protestant theory, tile Arminian, held to-day probably by the majority, insists that bothLove and Justice created the world 'and arrangedthe torment, and that Wisdom and Power werenot rco nsu lted ; hence that God has gotten intodifficulty, while eudeavoring to do justly and 10 :17-ingly by his creatures; because lacking in powerto render the needed aid. The entire difficulty, dear friends, is that in our reasoning 011 the sub-ject we have 110t sought the 'Word of the. Lord,

, What Say the ScripturesAll of the foregoing theories, be it noticed, are. based upon the 'assumption that death does notmean death-that to die is to become more alivethan before death. In Eden it was God who de-clared to our first parents: "Ye shall surely die."It was Satan who declared: "Ye shall 110t surelydie." Notice that the heathens, as well as -theChristians, have accepted Satan's lie and cor-respondingly rej eeted God's truth. Do they notall agree with the serpent's statement, "Ye shallnot surely die?" Do they not all claim that thedead are alive-much more alive than beforethey died? This. dear friends, has been our com-mon point of mistake. We have followed thewrong teacher; the one of whom our Lord said:"He abode not in the truth," and that he is "thefather of lies."-John 8:44-These false doctrines have prevailed amongstthe heathen for many, many centuries but theygained an ascendancy in the church of Christ dur-ing the dark ages, and had much to do with pro-ducing the darkness .thereof. If our -forefathershad believed God's testimony, "That! shalt surelydie," there would have been flo room for the in-trcduction icf prayers fOT the dead, masses fortheir sins, frightful thoughts respecting their tor-ture. The Scriptures agree from first to last that"the dead know not anything" (Eccl, 9 :5); andthat "their S0115 come to honor and they know itnot; they come to dishonor and they perceive it

11} WHER,E I1RE THE DEl1D?not of them." (Job 14 .sr) It is the Scripturesthat tell us where the dead are and their condi-tion; that they are experiencing neither joy 110rsorrow, pleasure nor su ffering; that they will'have no knowledge of anything, done under thesun until their awakening in the resurrection. 1remind you of the wise man's words, "Do withthy might what thy hand findeth to do, for thereis neither wisdom nor knowledge nor device in[sheol] the grave, whither thou goest," (Eccl.9 :10) I .rernind you that both in the Old Testa-ment and in the e'\v Testament it is written ofboth tile good and the bad that they fell asleep'in death, I remind you that the Apostle speaksof those who "sleep in Jesus," and of those whohave fallen asleep in Christ," who he declaresere perished, if there be no resurrection of thedead. Could they perish in heaven or. in purga-tory or in a hell of torment? . Assuredly ne oneso teaches. They are already in a perished con-dition in the ternb; and the perishing would beabsolute, complete, unless a resurrection he pro-vided for their deliverance from the power ofdeath. Hence we read: "God so. loved the worldthat he gave his only begotten Son, that whoso-ever believeth on him should not perish, buthave eternal life."In a ~.ord, then, the Bible teaching is that manwas made superior to all the brute creation-inthe image and likeness of his Creator; that he

possessed life in a perfect degree in Eden andmight have retained- it by full obedience. But inhis trial,' his testing, he failed and came underthe death sentence. "In the day that thou eatestthereof, dying thou shalt die." (Gen. 2:17) Therethe dying began, which, after nine hundred andthirty years, brought father Adam to the tomband involved all of his children in his weaknessesand death sentence. He died in that very day, which the Apostle Peter explains was not a twen-ty-four-hour day, but a thousand-year day, saying,"One day 1S with the Lord as a thousand years,"(2 Pet. 3 :8) During six, of these great days the

(r Pet. 3 :I8) As a re-.sult of that redemptive work accomplished atCalvary thereJs to be "a resurrection ofthe dead, both of the just and of the unjust"" " : " " a . recovery- from the death sentence, from theprison-house, the tomb,Death, Not 'Torm.ent, the Pe,l1a]tyNote well the mistake made in assuming thateternal torment is the wages' of original sin, when the Scriptures explicitly declare that "thewagesof .sin is death"-not eternal torment.(Rom. 6:23) We search the. Genesis account ofman's fall and the sentence imposed, but findno suggestion of a future punishm~nt,but merelyof a death penalty. Repeating it the second timethe Lord said: "Dust thou art, and unto dustshalt thou return:" (Gen. 3 :19) But he said nota word respecting devils, fire and torment. How,then, did the Adversary deceive our fathers dur-ing .the dark ages with his errors, whi1:h theApostle styles "doctrines of "devils?" Note thefact' that none of the' prophecies mention any-other thana death penalty for

]l.\ WHERE /iRE THE DEIlD9suggests that death would not be a sufficient pen-aity for sin, all we would need to do would be topoint him to the facts and thus prove his sug-gestions illogical, For the' sin of disobedienceAdam lost his paradisaic home-lost eternal lifeand divine fellowship. and instead got sickness, pain, sorrow, death. Additionally all of h is pos-terity, reasonably estimated at twenty thousandmillions, disinherited so far as th e blessings areconcerned, have inherited weaknesses, mental, moral and physical, and are, as the Apostle de-clares, "a groaning creation."-Rom. 8 :22.Notice again why our Lord died for our re-demption, and see in that another 'evidence of the'penalty. If the penalty against us had been eternaltorment, our redemption from it would have costour Lord that price. He would have been obligedto su ffereternal. torment, the just for the unj ust.But eternal torment was not the penalty; henceJesus did not pay thatpenalty for us. .Death wa:the penalty; and hence "Christ died for Of~Y sins:""By the grace of- God he tasted death for everyman." Whoever could; pay Adam's penalty could-settle with divine Justice for the sins of the. whole

world, because Adam alone had been tried, Adamalone had been 'condemned, We, his children, were involved through him. Behold the wisdomand the economy of our Creator I The Scripturesassure us that he condemned the whole worldfor one man's disobedience, in order that he mighthave mercy upon all through the obedience of,another- ...tChrist. We were condemned. to deathwithout COl1SCllt or knowledge. We were re-deemed from death without consent or knowledge. Some one may inquire: "Are we, therefore,-without responsibility? Will there be no indi-vidual penalty upon Us for individual wrongdoings?" vVe answer: "A just recompense ofreward" will be. meted out to all, But our eternaldestiny can be settled only by ourselves, by ourindividual acceptance or rejection of the grace ofGod, The Scriptures clearly inform us that everySill, in proportion to its wilfulness; brings a meas-

Thus the more mean and the more wicked'_a person may be, the greater will be his disad-vantage in the resurrection time, and the more hewill then' have to overcome to get back to allthat was lost in Adam and redeemed by Christ.

"And the Dead Came Forth"The most notable miracle our Lord per-

formed was the awakening of Lazarus, his friend.Jesus was gone several days when Lazarus tooksick, but remained where he was and allowed Laz-arus to die and a rude shock to come to the dearsisters. Then he said to his disciples : "Our friendLazarus sleepeth." (John II :n) Then, comingdown to their- comprehension, he added: "Laz-arus is dead; and I am glad for your sakes thatI was not there."-John 11 :J.{, 15.He was glad to let his friend fall o..r letp iKdeath; for it would provide a special oppprtunityfor a special miracle. Then, with his disciples,he began the three-days journey to Bethany. Wecannot blame the sorrowing sisters that -they felthurt. that the Messiah should apparently neglecttheir interests:' They knew that he had thepower to relieve them. Martha's gentle reproofwas: "Lord" if thou hadst been here my brotherhad not -died. Jesus said unto her, Thy brothershall rise again. Martha said unto him, I knowthat he shall rise again in the resurrection at thelast day." (John 2I :23, 24) Notice that our Lorddid not say: "Thy brother is not dead; thybrother is more alive than he ever was; he isin heaven o r in purgatory." Nothing of the kind!Purgatory had not yet been invented, and heknew nothing of it And as for heaven, ourLord's testimony is in our text: "No man hathascended into heaven, but he that came downfrom heaven." Martha was also well informed. The errors of the dark ages had net yet sup-planted the truth. Her hope for her brother wasthe Scriptural one; that be would rise ill the res-urrection, in the last day, the Millennia! day.

14 WHERE ARE TUJj) DE.t1D?Our Lord explained that t h e power of resur-rection was vested in h'imsel f , that he was therewith her, and could give relief to them withoutwaiting. Martha told our Lord that it was too.late; that putrefaction had set in by this time. But Jesus insisted 011 seeing the tomb; and whenhe arrived at it, he said: "Lazarus, come forth."and we read: "He that was dead came forth.",(John II:43, -44) Mark well that it was not

the living that came forth, but that Lazarus Wasreally dead. Mark well that he was not calledfrom heaven nor front purgatory,"All That Are in Their Graves"What Jesus did for Lazarus he intimated hewould ultimately do for Adam and his entirerace. Note" his words: "The hour is coming, in

the which all that are in the graves shall hearhis voice, and shall come forth." (John 5 :28, 29)Does -this- astonish us? If so, the -reason is .notfar to -seek, Itis because we. have' gotten so Faraway from the teachings of the Bible-so fullyimmersed in the "doctrines of devils," so fully tobelieve in the serpent's lie, "Ye shall not surelydie"-so blinded to the divine declaration: "Yeshall surely die," and "1'he wages of sin is death."The remainder of J ohn 5 '-29 explains that therewill be two general classes of the dead to comeforth: the first, those who have h-ad their trialand who have passed it successfully: the second, .all the remainder of -mankind who have thus farIaield to have divine approval. The approvedwill come rorth from the tomb unto a resurrec-tion of life-perfection. The disapproved willcame forth- unto a resurrection of judgment .. (seeRevised Version) The coming forth is one t_hing.The resurrection is another. The Apostle' ex-plains that they will come forth "every man inliis own order." (I Cor. IS :23) On thus beingawakened the privilege will be theirs of rising, up,up, up out of present degradation, mental, moral, physical, to the glorious perfection which. fatherAdam enjoyed in the image and likeness of hisCreator. WHERE ilRE THE DEAD? 15Peter refers to as the "restitution of all thingswhich God hath spoken by the mouth of all hisholy prophets since the world began."-Acts 3 :2I.NO r does this mean universal everlasting life, for the Scriptures declare that such as refuse toprofit by the glorious opportunities of the Millen-nium, such as refuse to be uplifted to-perfection,shall be destroyed from amongst the people inthe second death. "They shan be as though theyhad not been.?" (Obad. r6) I remind you againof our Lord's teaching on this subject. He en-tered the synagogue ae Capernaum and, beingasked to read the lesson, he chose Isaiah, thesixty-first chapter, and read respecting himselfand his work-that a part of it would be "to openthe prison-doors and set at liberty the captives.", . The prison-house which Christ will soon open isthe great prison-house, the tomb, which now holdsapproximately twenty thcusand millions of ourrace. At his second advent our Lord will openthis great prison-house and allow all the prisonersto come forth, j-ust as truly as he tlid in the ex-ample-in the case of Lazarus. NOI' will he callthem from '~aven, purgatory and hell, hut, iustas he said, "Lazarus', come forth," "all that are intheir graves shall hear his voice and come forth."My dear friends, you have had before you theanswers to, our question from the highestto the lowest earthly authorities. None of themwas satisfactory. Now you have heard the testi-mony of God's Word, the divine declaration as towhere are the dead. Harkening to the voice fromheaven we are assured that they are really deadand that ali their hopes as respects the futureare centered, first, upon the redemptive work ofour Lord Jesus, accomplished at Calvary,. and, secondly, upon the work of resurrection which, athis second advent, he is to accomplish for thosewhom he redeemed. If perchance yon have ashade of disappointment as respects a saintlybrother or sister, father or mother or child, whoyou boped was already in heaven, then as a con-solation look at the other side 0 f the question.

16 WHERE ARE THE DEaD?Behold how many of your loved ones, kith andkin, friends and foes and neighbors, according toyour theory and all the prevalent theories, havebeen suffering untellahle woe since their deathsand would be suffering similarly for long cen-turies to come. Consider the relief of mind andheart you get from the knowledge of the truth;that they are not alive anywhere, but simplydead, or more poetically, lhey are "asleep . inJesus," in the sense that he is their Redeemer, inwhom all their hopes of a future awakening reside.Just a closing word! Our subject would lacka proper finish if we did not explain Scripturallywhy God has delayed the world's blessing, theresurrection, nearly two thousand years since thedeath of Jesus. The reason is so glorious that itmust appeal to every true Christian heart.God purposed the selection of the church beforethe blessing of resurrection should gQ to theworld. The promise to these is not the resurrec-tion of restitution promised to mankind during theMillennium. On the contrary, these have a heaven-ly calling." After their consecration they are be-gotten ef the holy Spirit, and then instructed illthe school of Christ and submitted to trials anddisciplines in various ways, for the purpose of.chiseling and polishing their characters as newcreatures. These are a "little flock," gatheredone here and one there; "saints" from all de-nominations and from outside of all denomina-tions ; for "the Lord knoweth them that are his."When the predestined number of the elect shallhave been selected and polished, the present agewill end. Our Lard will come in second adventglory and power. His elect bride will constitutethe first resurrection class, from earthly to heav-enly nature, "changed in a moment;" for "fleshand blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.'Then will come the holy, invisible Millennialkingdom, the binding of Satan, the destructionof his unholy, invisible king, dom, and the settingloose of agencies for the enlightening and up-lifting of the whole race of rnankind,
