MUSIC APPRECIATION WEEKEND Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2

On this first weekend of June, we recognize and thank all of our musicians for sharing their gifts and praising the Lord in worship. “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,” Ephesians 5:19

During my time off in May, I spent two nights at

Camp Chrysalis in Kerrville, Texas for a pastor’s

retreat. I enjoyed time hiking to the pond and

relaxing in the rocking chairs on the porch of Luke’s

Place. One of the books I took with me was a small

prayer book that I bought several years ago at the

Antique Mall off I-80. The name of the prayer book

is Prayers Ancient and Modern. It begins with the

prayer our Savior taught us about 2000 years ago: The

Lord’s Prayer. The book also includes ancient prayers from the Psalms, along with

those from the fifth and sixth centuries to the middle ages. The names of the

“modern” prayer writers I do not recognize – most lived in the 19th century because

the book was originally published in 1897 and updated in 1928, so the modern prayers

are not what we might consider modern in the 21st century. Still, many of them might

resonate with our timeless humanity and our longing to connect with God. Below are

several of the ancient prayers included in the book. Do they speak to you in 2019?

Would you rewrite them to better express your prayer? If you were to write a prayer

today, what would you write?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight,
and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick
ones, O Lord; rest your weary ones; bless your dying ones; soothe
your suffering ones; pity your afflicted ones; shield your joyous ones;
and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
Attributed to St. Augustine (354-430 AD)
Guide us in your way, O Lord, and mercifully show the fountain of
wisdom to our thirsting minds; that we may be free from sorrowful
heaviness, and may drink in the sweetness of life eternal.
Mozarabic (Christians in Spain) before 700 A.D.
Ah, Lord our God, if You are so lovely in Your creatures, how
exceedingly beautiful and ravishing You must be in Yourself! --
Coming Soon!!! A Prayer Garden and Pollinator Habitat at Holy Cross
Holy Cross is very blessed to have a large green space surrounding our worship
building. It is vital that we are good stewards of this space and utilize it to share our
ministry with the community. We plan to add pollinator friendly plants to the Prayer
Garden located near the kitchen entrance and throughout the landscape. Our goal is to
beautify our space; provide a place for prayer, meditation, and fellowship; and help the
pollinators. Our goal is to become certified as a Nebraska Pollinator Habitat through the
University of Nebraska at Lincoln Extension.
What is Pollination? Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the flower’s male reproductive organs or structures to the flower’s female reproductive organs or structures, resulting in seed production. Over 150 crops in the U.S. require pollination for seed production! Most pollination services are provided by insects, wind, and other animals like birds.
Who are our pollinators? Most insect pollination is done by bees, flies, moths, butterflies, and beetles. There has been much attention given to the decline of our pollinators. The causes of their decline are numerous; loss of habitat, improper use of pesticides, poor nutrition, and disease.
Why pollinator habitat? By creating habitat for pollinators, you are supplying them with their necessary food resources, nesting habitats, water, and pesticide-free environment they need! By certifying your space, you are ensuring all the necessary pieces are in place! Also, it can help spread the word in your neighborhood about the importance of pollinators, and how others can help.
Some of the pollinator plants we have ready to plant are: Aromatic Aster - Radon’s Favorite, Butterfly Milkweed, Blue False Indigo, Rattlesnake Master, Rough Gayfeather, Meadow Gayfeather, Bee Balm, Wichita Mountains Goldenrod, Spiderwort, Turtlehead Hotlips, Turtlehead (white), Muscari, Purple Poppy Mallow, Golden Alexanders, Columbine, Prairie Dropseed, New Jersey Tea, ‘Sugar Shack’ Button Bush, Vernal Witch Hazel.
Some of the pollinator plants we already have added to the landscape are: Pasque Flower, Purple Coneflower, Praying Hands Hosta, Sedum, Speedwell, Switchgrass, Bluebeard shrub, Linden trees, Crabapple tree, Red Oak tree, and Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry tree.
Other plans
A picnic table will be added north of the Fellowship Hall near the play area.
EAST ENTRY PROJECT UPDATE Construction is expected to start any day now. Once it does and the excavation begins, the east entry, which serves as our main church entrance, will be completely blocked off from inside and out for several weeks. Please enter either through the east door to the kitchen or through the south door during the construction period.
EAST ENTRY PROJECT UPDATE $6,063.00 LEFT TO GO!!
Our East Entry project is scheduled with
contractor Garton Construction. This project will
include a replacement exit from the basement as the
current emergency exit needs repairs. It will also
include a covered entry to the East, and two storage
areas with one accessible from the basement and one
accessible from the outside.
At our January 27, 2019 annual meeting, our
congregation approved a cost of $32,000.00 for this
project. As of Sunday, May 19, we have received
$25,937.00. This was received through your generous
donations, from the offerings at our outdoor worship
service, April 10 Lenten Meal and Matching Funds from
the Mission Endowment Committee.
We are still continuing to take donations as
we work towards our $32,000.00 goal. There are
envelopes on the chart in the narthex or you can use
your own (please be sure to mark it “East Entry Fund.”
Donations may be mailed in or dropped in the offering
plate on Sunday mornings. Thank you to everyone for
your assistance in keeping our church safe and inviting!
CAROL JOY HOLLING CAMP, CONFERENCE & RETREAT CENTER: On March 14, we learned that emergency personnel were evacuating some of our neighbors near Ashland due to rising river levels along the Platte River. As the day went on, we felt the Holy Spirit’s nudge to act and offered a safe place to stay for anyone displaced by flooding. Over the next few days, 10 families from Saunders, Cass, and Sarpy counties found peaceful refuge at Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference & Retreat Center. Some needed just a night or two, while others needed a few weeks to find a new home. Through your generosity, we were able to serve in this unexpected way. God multiplied your gifts, enabling us to open our doors without hesitation to provide sacred hospitality for these displaced families. THANK YOU! On behalf of the Lincoln Food Bank/Beatrice Public School Backpack Program we would like to thank you for your contribution. Your commitment to helping provide food-filled backpacks to hungry children and their families in our community is sincerely appreciated. The backpacks are providing much-needed food to children in the Beatrice Public School system that otherwise may go hungry during the weekends. This is a program that with continued community support such as yours we hope will grow each year to meet the needs of our school children and their families. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the children in our community! THANK YOU FROM OAKS INDIAN MISSION: Dear Friends, We deeply appreciate your gracious gift of $3500.00 toward the Immanuel Vision Foundation match. Thank you for investing in this wondrous opportunity with which, we are bold to confess, the Lord is blessing the Oaks Indian Mission and the children this ministry, as it has for centuries now, continues to serve. It is an exciting step into a future that calls for the faithful. A daunting challenge, to be sure, but the Oaks, being surrounded by such loving partners, like you, bears witness to things, otherwise impossible, that God can do! How wondrously generous, friends—thank you so very much. What an uplifting, inspiring thig it was to receive this gift...it really is an exciting time here at the Oaks. Appreciate your partnership in making it so! In Christ, Rev. Don Marshall, Executive Director Dear Friends, Christ is risen! There’s simply nothing better than these three words that change everything. Indeed, Christ rose that we too might rise to new life! In fact, that is exactly what was proclaimed this past Easter Dunay at the sunrise service held at the Oaks cemetery, as John, a high school senior about to graduate from Oaks Mission School was baptized: “We were buried therefore with Christ by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Thank you for this gift of $100.00 that helps continue to make life-transforming moments like the celebration of this Sacrament possible here at the Oaks Indian Mission. You folks are so gracious toward this ministry and sensitive to our needs here at the Oaks...supporting our special campaign, while remembering the on-going expenses of operating such a ministry! May the blessing of this Easter Season abide with you! Rev. Don Marshall, Executive Director
Recipe for fatherhood
A man who wishes to be a great Christian father should consider the following:
A. Let your children see that you treat your own parents with love and respect. Honor them.
B. Let your children see that you love your heavenly Father.
C. Show in various ways that you love their mother. A loving home is a secure, stable, supportive
home where each person is treated with tender loving care.
D. Listen to your children. Put down the paper, turn off the television, leave the computer and
frequently ask what is going on in their lives.
E. Plan and execute trips and recreational activities together.
F. Take part in school, scouting, musical and drama activities with them. Praise sincerely whatever
contribution the child has made to the event.
G. Make your home cheerful. Tell funny stories and laugh. Laughter at the table creates a happy environment.
H. When your children ask for it, give your best advice, but don’t complain when they don’t follow it. The school of hard
knocks is still relevant.
I. Take them to worship regularly. The church helps provide guidance, stability and unity for families. And God can seal
together the family that honors Him. *******
John Ruskin, (1819-1900) was an English author and teacher at Oxford University. There is a memorial to
Ruskin on the shores of Derwentwater in the Lake District. Under a Celtic Cross on the memorial are the following
words: The Spirit of God is around you in the air you breathe. His glory is in the light you see, and in
the fruitfulness of the earth and the joy of his creation. He has written for you day by day his revelation and he has
granted you day by day your daily bread. — The Friendship Book of Francis Gay
