has been in public life for the past eleven years, and during all

that lime there has been but one bre.il^ in his continuous service

in the city. He first became a candidaU for the City t^ouncil in

iy05, and was elected. In the ytar 1915 he was a candidate for

Mayor, and was elected by a large majority. This year he was re-

turned by acclamation. He is interested in a larsje phnuna mill

and lumber y.trd. and has been eminently successful.

Mr. Dcres came to the City of Nia.n-ara Kails from London, in May1902. and started in business on Queen street, called Dores' Fair.

Mr. Dorcs wa.n first elocted to the City Council in 1907. under the

Ward System, in Ward No. 2; in 1908-09 by the city at large; in

1910-11 he served as Mayor; was out of Council during 1912; wasagain elected to Ctuncil as Alderman ni 1913; was again elected

Mayor fcr year 1914; was cut of Couicil during year 1915; andwas a.gain elected as Alderman for the present year. 1916.

Came to City of Niagara Falls in the yi ai- 1902. as foreman in thenew Niagara Cigar Factory, which business he took over as pro-IJrietor in 1909, in which he is meeting- with eminent success. Mr.Locke is a prominent member of the Cij^var Makers' fnion. hav-ing held the highest offices in the gift of that organization: is at

the present time Vice-President of the Trades' and Labor Coun-cil. He is also a prominent member of several fratern il societies,and also a member of the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

manner in which the City Council, the Ontario Power Company, the

hotel men. and the caterers to the public generally have r.^sponded to

our appeal in making this Souvenir the success it undoulitedly is. Let

me express the hope that the Woodmen, both while at Niagara Falls,

and when they return home, will, all other things being eiiual, return

the compliment by being- friendly in a business way, and palronizing

those who have been friendly to the Woodmen.To the Head Camp let me say that wc appreciate your visit, and

to that time he served as Alderman for ten years, and was

Mayor during the year 1903. when he was ap-oointed Post-

master for the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Mr. Phtmister

has been a resident of this city for the past fifty years. Pre-

vious to his accepting the position of Postmaster he was em-

ployed as Locomotive Engineer of the Grand Trunk Railway.

He is also a member of several fraternal organizations, being

the present Chairman of the Trustee lioard of Niagara Falls

The rate of taxation is 25 mills on the dollar on half valuation.

The City has a splendid Fire Depp.rtmtnt (six companies). \\'ater Works System. Electric Light Sys-

tem, Sewerage System, Natural Gas Svstem, P'ree Mail Delivery, Two Surface Street Electric Railways, andother modern municipal improvements including twenty miles of paved streets and forty miles of cement sidewalks

The City has the finest scenic park system in the world and is the centre of a boulevard which extendsfrom Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, buiU and maintained by the Ontario Government.

Niagara Falls has deep water navigation at Chippawa. a suburb of two miles to the north, conr.ection with

which is by surface trolley line (International Railway Rrancli of Niagara Falls Park and Rixer Fiailway) andMichigan Central Railroad (steam.)

There are 16 Churchv-^s, embracing all denominations.

The City has a fine Carnegie Library Buildii'g. the -14th Regiment Armoury, Cily Hospital and Nurses'Home.

Educational advantages are second to none in the Dominion for a city of its size, h.aving a Collegiate In-

stitute and rive modern Public Schools, a Young Ladies' Seminary (Catholic) and Separate School. These edu-cational facilities pro\ide a full course for the L'niversity, teachers' training, and for a business career.

The Falls Power dex'clopment is ',he most remarkable on the .\merican continent. There are three large

electric power companies de\cloping 1^5.000 H. P. These are the Ontario Power Co., Canadian Niagara PowerCo., and the Toronto Power Co., Limited. There are three distributing companies, viz.; The Hydro-F.lectric ' o.,

the (Ontario Distributing Co., and the City of Niagara Falls, Canada.

The Financial world of this city is d^ly handled by the Royal Hank of Canada, the Imperial Bank, the

Bank of Hamilton, and Canadian Bank of Commerce. All maintain branches throughout the cit}'.

The material prosperity is shoivn in the varied manufacturing interests represented. More th^n forty

manufacturing firms turn out products noted for their high quality throughout the Dominion of Can,i'Ia and the

L'nited States.
