It is the time to think, it is the time to plan, it is the time to begin.

The mystery of the New Year - the anticipation of what will happen in the coming 365 days - can only be solved by this cycle of thinking, planning and beginning.

Although a lot of us are good at the first and second step - that’s what happens in New Year Resolutions - we often trip at the third step. As Plato said, ‘The beginning is the most important part of the work’.

On a journey to space, the spacecraft burns more than 25 percent of its fuel while taking off the first few metres - and the remaining 75 percent is good enough for a journey of half a million kilometers!

This is the challenge all of us will also face - our best intentioned plans will not work unless we put in a much higher initial effort to overcome the initial resistance. After that, momentum will take over to keep it going.

This is admittedly not easy - in personal life or in corporate planning - but that is the difference between the history-readers and the history-makers!

As someone said - you have to choose between the pain of discipline & the pain of regret; but remember, discipline weighs in pounds and regret weighs in tonnes.

I wish you Godspeed in pursuing and exceeding your resolutions and plans this year - for yourself, your family and for IPE Global. Let us make it a year of new beginnings, great achievements and wonderful memories.

Let’s Begin.

BEST WISHESAshwajit Singh

CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF GLOBAL EXCELLENCEContinuous innovation and rapid transformation have been themes throughout our history, which began when alumni of the London School of Economics (LSE) established Infrastructure Professionals Enterprise Private Limited in 1998 or what would be known as ‘IPE Global’ was born.

The thought was envisaged in the triumphant decade of the 1990s; an age characterised by rapid development, marked by liberalisation and globalisation. This coupled with an enactment of 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments in the year 1993 -an event of almost epochal importance in the history of local government institutions in India, whereby Government of India had decided to devolve powers down the line to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Today, we have demystified sustainability into a discipline capable of delivering solutions, with a passion for heralding change through our work. Our projects, spread across 12 Sectors and Practice Areas, have transformed the lives of over 300 million people across the globe. We have implemented 850+ projects in over 100 countries, addressing some of the most complex socio-economic issues.

To soar new heights, we must proceed steadily, our feet on the ground, working togeth-er towards a single goal. With that thought, I wish everyone a successful new year.

makes us all look forward to the opportunities ahead. In order to streamline operations we have converged some of our sectors & practice areas to deliver the best of quality to our partners.

Knowledge Management and Staff Development is a key pillar of IPE’s future strategy, and 2017 has been a watershed

year. The Global Strategy Meet helped refine and realign our approach towards staff, systems and synergy. We have also revamped our Learning and Development Strategy to focus on the emerging needs of the development sector. Avenues such as Toastmasters Club, Book Club and Fitness First were initiated for staff engagement and growth. ‘IPE Cares’ - a unique CSR and Volunteering opportunity has been set up to make a difference directly in people’s lives. The first batch of IPE’s Young Leaders has been selected and a Youth Board conceptualised. In sum, a ‘re-routing’ year to help make the future journey easier, faster and a lot more effective. Looking forward to an even more dynamic 2018!

Last year was the year of consolidation with expansion into new sectors, practices and geographies. For close to two decades, IPE

Global has built impeccable credentials in the social development management space initially in India and progressively, among developing economies in the world. To support the growing needs of the business we are planning to further strengthen our systems and processes with improved management information system for effective decision making both at Management and Board level. With strong determination and ability, we will definitely achieve the best results and make IPE Global one of the best workplaces in the world.

2017 was a challenging and yet rewarding year on many fronts. Looking forward we

are well positioned for growth. This is a testament to the talent, professionalism and hard work of our employees. In the year 2018, we hope to continue our good run and contribute to the development agenda for an equitable and sus-tainable growth.

IPE Africa increased its market presence throughout 2017 - growing the client base, building new regional relationships, leveraging IPEs many assets

and strengthening our team capabilities to work with our clients to deliver the SDGs. Our team’s successfully delivered challenging projects that contributed towards inclusive growth and resilience across the region. Going into 2018, IPE Africa is better positioned for growth than ever before. Our ambition is high. We believe we will drive the Group’s strategy of being a global player in the international development consulting market delivering results and value for money. We also believe we will be the employer of choice in our regional markets. Join the conversation and share our ambition.

2017 was a challenging year for our entire team. We have emerged as a pioneer in projectization of

advance infrastructure development across the smart cities in the country and has been awarded as most innovative infrastructure project by Hon. Minister MoHUA. Improvement of livability standards, which is the prime focus of Smart Cities, has been taken care under this project by incorporating five of the key urban services in a single comprehensive package. The project comprises of an underground duct spread across 25 Km in the ABD Area (Smart City Area) of Ujjain. This project will transform the ABD area in an unprecedented way while opening doors for immense opportunity for tourism and economic growth of the area. - Anil Kumar Bansal, Director - Urban & Infrastructure Development

Year 2017 has been a year full of enriching experiences and accomplishments for the

Education and Skills Development team (ESD). These accomplishments would open lots of doors of opportunity for us in and outside India. With 5+ projects won during 2017, the ESD is engaging with various clients including ADB, World Bank, EdCIL India Limited, OPEPA, BSEIDC, SCERT, NURLM, NITI Aayog and various state governments (Meghalaya, Bihar, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh). These opportunities uniquely position us towards creating innovative models for improving the education systems for ensuring inclusive and equitable quality of education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.- Shalender Sharma, Vice President - Education & Skills Development

IPE Triple line’s PSD team successfully completed its engagement as the M & E partner

to the $256 million Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund in early 2017. Over a 7 year period, we designed and implemented the AECF’s M & E system, and in doing so led the way in ensuring AECF was able to properly capture both the developmental and commercial impact of its investments which has included generating an annual net benefit of $234 million in benefit to 2.65 million households across 24 countries in Africa, and creating more than 9,000 new jobs. 2017 has been an important year for both Governance & SEE with the achievement of key milestones

at the international, national and state level. There has been an increased engagement with the Government of India and state governments to support development and implementation of policies and guidelines as well as to share project learnings and findings from nationwide support supervision to informed decision making. Each new win has brought innovation and knowledge. In the coming year, our aim will be to strengthen partnerships, establish collaborations and scale up innovations to touch millions of lives across geographies.- Raghwesh Ranjan, Director - Social & Economic Empowerment

In 2017 SEE in the UK have seized important opportunities to put gender equality and social inclusion

at the heart of all IPE’s work. We undertook one of the first gender and inclusion audits of a major multi-national challenge fund, the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund. Our work was described by a key donor as: the most exhaustive study made on this issue and critical for all areas of our private sector work.’ We collaborated with SEE in India on the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation programme, UDAAN & RajPusht, and we’ve worked closely with the UK to put gender and inclusion at the heart of our Urban and Private Sector work.- Juliette Seibold, Head - Social & Economic Empowerment (UK)

While there is much work to do and there may be further challenges ahead, we ended

2017 stronger and better able to serve clients & communities. We would continue with the same zeal this year. In 2017, DFID contracted IPE Triple Line to advice on the selection of projects for the first round of the related UK Aid Match Phase II programme. UK Aid Match is a £120 million programme designed to support civil society projects contributing to the achievement of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, while also increasing the engagement of the UK public with international development issues and have a say how UK aid is spent. - Martin Wright, Head - Grant & Fund Management (UK)

into the monitoring space with the monitoring assignment of the Swachch Bharat Mission being implemented by the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation. Additionally, EPFM & MEL Team won the 1st of its kind assignment in the evaluation space where they were assigned the task to evaluate the private sector infrastructure portfolio investments being undertaken by DFID through its Development Capital Investment partnerships with IDFC (debt partnership) and SBICAPS (equity partnership).- Soumen Bagchi, Director - EPFM & MEL

IPE Global’s team of international and national experts are at the start of their role as evaluation manager

for this high profile programme in Myanmar. The assignment started with work to support DFID’s Annual Review of Humanitarian and Resilience Programme (HARP). The team have also delivered the inception report for the evaluation services which we will deliver over the next three years, drawing on evidence from extensive document review, in-country stakeholder interviews and analysis of findings. HARP is an important contract in our Myanmar portfolio and we expect that it will help growing the business in-country.- Clarissa Poulson, Head - Monitoring Evaluation & Learning (UK)

The year 2017 has provided us an opportunity to take a challeng-ing but impactful assignment in

Afghanistan. Transparency in govern-ment processes ensures the indiscrim-inate reach of information and services to all the citizens. India has seen imple-mentation of e-Governance to ensure transparency in government processes in multiple areas. IT & E-Governance unit has been part of many such imple-mentations. The time was ripe to take the experience gained by us in India to other countries. There could not have been any better place for this than Af-ghanistan which is in the process of re-building and rejuvenation.- Vikas Guru, Vice President - IT & e-Governance

2017 has been an insightful year for IPE Global in Ethiopia, where on one side we added new clients and entered new domains, winning our first project in Malawi and on the other losing some opportunities with narrow margins. This allowed us to introspect and correct what might

be making us complacent. The team in Ethiopia is small, but talented and willing to stretch. This all resulted in making 2017 a year of identifying our strengths in Ethiopia – strong networks, partnerships and database of experts and an image built as a trusted partner amongst our clients. 2018 would be the year of consolidation and conversion - of our strengths into opportunities to win and learn more. We have become bold in 2017, taking some giant leaps in taking responsibilities, in 2018 we shall test our resolve.

2017 was a fabulous year for Africa, expanding into new sectors in private sector development, governance and social protection. Kenya office, with its growing portfolio of work, constitutes a strong team of committed persons from Asia, Europe and Africa with sound business strategy,

who draw on successful models and approaches from India and other emerging countries from South East Asia to implement some of the most significant projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. We excelled in doing things we normally do and exerted efforts in trying innovative approaches, we enjoyed negotiating with new clients and kept pace with those who we have been working in the past, we continued to work with experts known to us and welcomed those who joined hands with us for the first time. All in all, it was an exciting year. We look forward to more challenges and opportunities.
