2011 STATE TEAMS AGE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS On Friday 16th September Ben Cooper, Ben Fuller, Kiah Hazel and Kaitlyn Lee headed to Canberra to join a group of Australia’s best junior swimmers for “State of Origin”. Dual Junior World Championship gold medallist Cameron McEvoy was the most notable of more than 200 of Australia’s best young swimmers competing at the 2011 State Teams Short Course event at the AIS in Canberra finishing earlier today. Teams representing Queensland, NSW, Victoria, West Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, aged 13 to 17, contested the third State Teams Short Course event over four sessions that started on Saturday 17 September from 5.00pm at the AIS. Swimming Australia’s National Youth Coach Vince Raleigh, who has also just returned from the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man, says competing in a team environment and racing against the best in Australia for their age is an important part of the development of the youth program. “The main thing is getting athletes prepared to race at this time of the year, which really mirrors some of the international meets and also gives them something to focus on in terms of their fitness and preparation,” said Raleigh. “Outside of the Australian Age Championships, the best young swimmers in Australia don’t often get to race against each other and to do so in a team environment gives states the chance to work together and coaches the opportunity to develop professionally as well.” “This event has received fantastic support from all the states over the last three years and while it’s still only young on the Australian swimming calendar, we are already seeing benefits as athletes progress through from State Teams into senior and open teams and competition.” Western Australia Athletes: Brandon Bennier, Nicholas Brown, Montana Colreavy, Christopher Dombrowsky, Chante Du Randt, Maggie Emmett, Robert Evans, Ryan Evernden, Rory Franks, Damian Fyfe, Lyndon Goldsmith, Adelaide Hart, Brodie Hedges, Grace Hull, Jack Osborne, Alex Regnaud, Jacson Robb, William Rollo, Steven Rose, Chelsea Sanders, Jemma Saxton, Adele Schultz, Luke Staffe, Tommy Sucipto, Kate Symons, Georgia Truscott, Rebecca Turnell, Chelsea Unwin, Candice Wall Coaches: Paul Bruce, Daniel Dielesen, Peta Goodsell Gregory Hodge, Stacey Scott, Gordon Shaw, Michael Shaw, Brett Tongue, Managers: Steven Rose and Kate Symons Victoria Athletes: Celeste Astorino, Hayley Baker, Ewan Bennett, Emily Camenzuli, Jordan Chivers, Jack Collins, Lily Collins, Sebastian Cumins, Jack Currie, Leon Dong, Jack Gerrard, Alexandra Good, Nicholas Groenwald, Eliza Ham, Jessica Hansen, Mack Horton, Mitchell Hutton, Isaac Jones, Kate Laidlaw, Tyson Lawes, Christina Licciardi, Karly Mansfield, Hamish McDougall, Rachel Mihatsch, Adam Nettlefold, James Nettlefold, Emma Niere, Meghan Parry, Michael Passaro, Annie Pepper, Karlene Pircher, Mitchell Pratt, Samuel Russo, Jemma Schlicht, Benjamin Schreiner, Lucy Soden, Lushavel Stickland, Natalie Vercher, Lachlan Wells, Sian Whittaker Coaches: Dean Bryant, Craig Jackson, Wayne Lawes, Cam Nation (head coach), Michael Sage, Mark Synnot, Nicholas Veliades Managers: Sonia MacGregor, Warwick Waters, Kirsty Woodham Physiotherapist: Jacqueline Bloder Tasmania Athletes: Ella Adams, Timothy Belstead, Thomas Curran, Sam Curtis, Lily Czeszek, Evan Dixon, Kaitlyn Ellston, Alec Guerzoni, Jessica Hardstaff, Will Harmsen, Dylan Harris, James Knowles, Joshua McDermott, Emma Newell, Lachlan Pagett, Fay Power, Joanna Smart, Calico Yeaman Coaches: Derek Taylor

More than 50 swim clubs benefit through Equipment Grants Swimming Australia has this week commenced delivering much needed equipment to swimming clubs as part of the 2011 Club Equipment Grant program with over 50 clubs nation-wide set to benefit. Recipients of the grant include clubs in the surrounding areas affected by recent floods in Victoria and Queensland as well as smaller, regional clubs that are required to travel long distances to compete regularly. Eligible clubs across the country will receive one of the following items as part of the grants; a marshalling and events board, a shade marquee, a laptop with swimming-specific programs installed, 20 kick boards/pull buoys and a dry land training kit, a pace clock, an underwater video kit or a wireless timing system. Head coach and director of North West Aquatic Swimming Club in Victoria, Cam Nation said the equipment will make a huge difference for his club. “The swimmers will now be able to use the equipment at local swim meets and the benefits will not only be received by the club, but by the greater Metro West District,” said Nation. More than 200 clubs were put through a tough judging process which involved Swimming Australia assessing each club’s needs, and a close look at what impact the grant would have on the swimming community in that particular region. So far 58 clubs have been successful in their application for a grant, with the roll-out of equipment continuing throughout September. Swimming Australia’s General Manager of Community Sport Adam Pine said swimming clubs are the backbone of the sport. “We hope these grants will aid clubs in enhancing the sport for all of our members as well as the wider community,” said Pine. “To be able to provide much needed equipment to more than 50 clubs is a key component of our aim to grow the sport and add to the already large number of swimmers competing at a club level.” To qualify for the grant, clubs had to have participated in Swimming Australia’s GO Club PB program which is aimed at identifying and rewarding clubs based on measuring their service and performance across the board, not just in competition. Manager of Devonport Swimming Club in Tasmania Barry Pickett said the grants have been extremely well received. The support of the Community Equipment Grant will help reduce costs to swimmers and their parents and the money saved will allow the club to expand and provide improved facilities for its members,” said Pickett. “Receiving this equipment grant has allowed our club to redirect funding towards establishing club rooms at the pool, and providing facilities to encourage group exercising. The dry land equipment will give the opportunity for our swimmers to exercise and improve on their core strength and work together prior to swim training.” Aimed at clubs and their communities, the grants are part of Swimming Australia’s ongoing commitment to increasing the capacity of clubs and improving the equipment that is available for members. Swimming Australia is paving the way for the next generation of swimmers by providing clubs with necessary training equipment. The new equipment can be used as a drawcard to encourage aspiring swimmers to continue club-swimming. Congratulations to Darwin Swimming Club on successfully applying for an Equipment Grant.
