Letter from the SDBJ

W e’re big on outcomes here at the San Diego Business Journal. It’s part of our mission to share success stories with the San Diego business community.

So we are pleased to share with you on the following pages 40 success stories – profiles of our honorees from the San Diego Next Top Business Leaders Under 40 event. These short stories don’t do justice to the accom-plishments of these leaders and emerging leaders. And as big a number as 40 is, that really doesn’t capture the scope of young talent in our market.

We received more than 300 nominations for this program, the most we’ve had for an event in recent history. It was an arduous task to determine 150 finalists – the talent among that group is remarkable.

Making the top 40 is, indeed, an honor. They represent a cross section of our local economy, from life science companies, defense, digital marketing, e-commerce, professional services and tourism and hospitality.

We owe a big thank you to our judges: Sara Brown, CEO of Sara Brown Events; Lindsey Head, CFO for J Public Relations; and Lori Ann Stevens, Design Manager West Coast for Turner Engineering Group.

More than 500 people attended the Aug. 14 event at the Westin Gaslamp San Diego Quarter.

We would also like to thank the sponsors who made the event and program possible: Moss Adams and Robbins Arroyo LLP.

HNM Systems Inc.

Moyer in 2011 co-founded HNM Systems Inc., a multimillion-dol-lar international company that

seeks out talent for the telecommuni-cations sector. Rather than screen po-tential employees and send companies choices, HNM vets its only employee pool and offers clients individuals or groups of people who can take on short- or long-term assignments, then return to HNM when the job is done. The business model was conceived by Moyer, who previously served as an executive officer for a technical staff-ing firm in San Diego that achieved 900 percent growth over six years. She studied business administration at San Diego State University.

Six years ago, while having dinner

at one of the 18 hotels he either owns

and/or manages, Robert Rauch,

founder and CEO of RAR Hospital-

“It was pure coincidence that I

happened to be there having din-

called Rauch, who founded the ho-

tel management company in 1990.

“Someone yelled for help, I called

to-mouth while his mother looked

on, and I resuscitated the boy.”

Earlier this year, that grateful young

man got married at the same hotel

— Homewood Suites in Del Mar.

That wasn’t the first or the last time

that Rauch was involved in a crisis

management situation at one of his

Power of Towers Shapes

Downtown Rental Scene

PROPERTY: High-Rise Projects

Make Sense in Expensive Market

n By RAY HUARD

Take a look around downtown San Diego and

new apartment towers — previously a rare sight —

are sprouting up like never before.

Prior to 2003, there was only one market rate

apartment tower of more than 100 apartments in

the entire county, according to CBRE.

That one was AVA Cortez Hill, a 299-unit com-

plex at 1399 Ninth Ave., built in 1973.

Since 2003, nine apartment towers have been

built — all but one in downtown San Diego,
