2020 EVENTS

In the upcoming weeks wewill be looking to finalise and publish the dates for our‘changed-agenda’ in acknowledging and celebrating studentachievement. The annual Awards Night will take a differentapproach with restricted access to venues. We will also be welcoming students from our Cluster PrimarySchools on Wednesday afternoon for the first session ofExcellence in Science!

REMINDER: YEAR 12 AQUATIC PRACTICES -FANTOME ISLAND REMOTE AREA FIELD CAMP

Year 12 Students attending the Aquatic Practices camp toFantome Island will be heading off in just 2 weeks! Planning andpreparations are underway and the excitement levels are high.

Reminder: Payment is due in full by the 21st of August. Ifyou have any questions, please contact Ms. DeRuyter.

BOATING SAFETY AND RECREATION

Last month, the year 12 Aquatic Practices students were givena boating demonstration by Andrew from Andrew Ryder BoatLicensing. Andrew gave the students an introduction to JetSki and recreational boating using his vessel and equipment, including safety and correct use of equipment. As part of hisintroduction to boating, Andrew also included a lesson in howto use marine distress flares. Students will now have theopportunity to obtain their recreational boat license which formsa part of their next assessment piece.

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY - PGLO GENETICTRANSFORMATION

Recently, our Year 12 Biology class undertook a MandatoryPractical of performing a genetic transformation, which is whena cell takes up (takes inside) and expresses a new piece ofgenetic material—DNA. This new genetic information oftenprovides the organism with a new trait which is identifiable aftertransformation. Students took the Green Fluorescent Proteinfrom the jellyfish, Aequorea victoria, and transferred it into thebacteria E.coli, which they then streaked onto agar plates.Once the E.coli grew, it fluoresced under UV light!

THE SCIENCE OF TASTE AND FOODPRODUCTION

Did someone say Kombucha?!

Year 11 students studying Science in Practice are learning allabout the benefits of using microorganisms in food production!Cheese, yoghurt, breads, and kombucha are some of thecommon contemporary foods in our society which rely on theuse of bacteria and/or fungus to produce the unique flavourswhich are enjoyed by most.

Kombucha is a fermented drink made from sweetened teaand a specific culture known as a 'scoby' (scoby stands for'Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeasts). The bacteria andyeasts convert the sugar into acetic acid during fermentation. These students have worked to create, analyse, evaluate andimprove the production of kombucha for best flavour, textureand colour.

Delicious and good for your gut too!

NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY

On Friday 31st July, our school held aNational Tree Day at school, which sawmultiple projects take place. Representativesfrom the Year 12 cohort planted a range ofnative trees in our ‘Senior Boulevard,’ which is a special area ofour school where our departing students can add to theirlegacy in a long-lasting way.

Our Reef Guardian students also planted trees in their NativeYin Yang Garden at the front of the school, which is thriving withthe trees planted from past years!

The science team also joined the P & C for their workingbee on Saturday 1st August. We worked on maintaining theYin Yang garden by pruning, weeding, planting more treesand straightening our garden edging. We then moved on toestablishing a new garden at the back of R block! The nativefauna of William Ross are going to be very happy.

YEAR 7 REEF HQ VIRTUAL TOUR

During week 5, our year 7 cohort were treated to a virtual visitto Reef HQ. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were not ableto visit as we usually do, but the session did not disappoint. The kids were able to interact with our hosts Craig and Joby answering or asking questions, with Craig going “mobile”and taking us around to different parts of the aquarium. Thehighlight for most was to meet “Georgie”, the sole patient in theTurtle hospital and to watch how much she enjoyed having herback scrubbed with a scrubbing brush (if she was a cat, I thinkshe would have purred!). The kids learned about food webs onthe reef, things that threaten these food webs and threaten ourturtles. Students also offered up a heap of ideas as to how wecan help to protect the marine environment.

Big thanks to Reef HQ education centre and specifically Craigand Jo for putting on an entertaining and engaging show thatfinished way too soon for some.

DID YOU KNOW? Out of the 7 species of marine turtles in theworld, 6 of them reside in Australian waters.

Chinese Language Celebrations – Student quotes

“I really enjoyed being exposed to the cultural experiences suchas Xinjiang dancing and the Taiqi performance. However, myfavourite part was listening to the Chinese Erhu being played.I hope to continue my Chinese language studies into seniorschool as I aspire to be a Chinese language teacher in thefuture.” - Isabelle Cleland

“Mr Evans gave a very heartfelt speech about the importanceof language studies in schools. We appreciate the support theConfucius Institute has provided the students of William Rossover the past 10 years. I can’t wait to see where my Chineselanguage studies lead me in the future.” D’veaka Aajar

“It was an inspiration to learn about the traditional techniquesused to hand make jiaozi (dumplings). They were the mostdelicious delicacies and this experience brought the Chinesestudents closer together and gave us a wider understanding ofChinese culture and the importance of family and friendship.” -Brodie Ridge
