· .. ..STARLING MEDICAL COLLEGE enters upon its thirty

fifth year with increased strength and efficiency. Its conspicuous advantages are being more widely recognized, andthe honorable record of its graduates, scattered throughoutthe Union, continue to support its claims to a solid andwell-earned reputation. While the College was among theearliest to join i 11 the efforts of the American MedicalCollege Association to raise the standard of medical education, its classes have steadily increased in size, the lastbeing the largest for a number of years.

Placed in the Capital of the State, possessing the finestCollege building in the country, and a perpetual charter,it has e very guarantee of permanence. Every ad vantageis offered to the tudent that can be found elsewhere, andat as little cost a is compatible with a thorough equipmentand maintenance of the College.

CLINICS.

This is the only College in the State which has aHo pital of its own. The St. Francis Hospital of StarlingMedical College is a well appointed institution, having 100beds,situated in the College building, so that patients can becon veniently brought before the class, even when sufferingfrom severe acute disorders. Medical and surgical clinics areheld weekly throughout the year. Clinical instruction isalso gi ven in the wards of the Hospital. During t.he pastyear nearly all the diseases which occur in this climate~ere represented in the wards and brought into the Clinics. This heing also the only general Hospital in the city, recentaccidents of a surgical nature are brough t to it in greatnumber and variety, and its wards constantly contain abundant material for clinical instruction in surgery, as well

Page 9: 1880-81 35th Announcement, Starling Medical …...e o ~ 5 e 8 oo 0 ~88~_ September 1, Thursday-RegularCourse begins. December 22, Thursday-Ho!idl,l,yVacation begins. ~882. January

as general practice. The clinical resources of the OhioPenitentiary and Franklin County Infirmary are also freeto our students.

A large and completely furnished Morgue has recently been added to the Hospital, when:' post mortemexaminations are made before the class, and frequent opportunities are given to the student to perform the examination himself, and thus become familiar with thisim portant method of investigation.

The Physiological Laboratory has proved an importantaid to instruction in that department.

Advanced students will find every opportunity forindtruction in the use of the microscope, ophthalmoscope, sphygmograph, and other instruments of precision anddiagnosis, and in physiological and chemical work, undercompetent instructors.

Special atten.tion is paid to Urinalysis, with practicalwork in the Chemical Laboratory.

Since our last announcement the subjects of Ophthalmology and Insanity have been assigned to teachers ofability in those departments.

MUSEUM AND LIBRARY.

The Museum of the College contains everything thatis necessary to illustrate the various branches of medicalteaching, and is daily increasing. It has also many objectsof interest to the naturalist as well as to the physician, andis especially rich in the department of Comparative Anatomy. It is provided with several microscopes, including afine binocular microscope, completely equipped.

A commodious apartment on the ground floor is devotedto the Library and Reading-room. It contains nearly twothousand volumes, comprising the standard medical worksand many rare books of reference. Several handsome donations have been made to it, and it now bids fair to becomean institution of great value not only to the College but tothe professional in general.

REQUISITES FOR GRADUATION.

The candidate must have attained the age of twenty-

COURSE OF INSTRUCTION.

The voluntary system of graded instruction has beenon trial for a sufficient time to test its merits and demerits. While we continue to recommend attendance upon threecourses, without preliminary study, we have found it bestto insist upon the continuous study of the whole curriculum, with final examinations in all departments at the end ofthree years. Special attention should be gi ven, during thefirst year. to Anatomy, Physiology, Cnemistry, MateriaMedica, and Dissections. Attendance upon three years'lectures does not entail extra expense in fees, there beingat present no charge, except for matriculation, during thethird year.

REGULAR AND PRELIMINARY SESSION.

The next regular session will begin on Thursday, September 1st, 1881, and continue six months.

The prelimipary session, 10rmcrly held in September,is therefore merged in the regular course, that more time maybe gi ven to all the departments of medicine. Prompt attendance upon the beginning of the ession will be required.

The dissecting-rooms will be open early in the term, under the direction of the Demonstrator, who will furnishmaterial at a moderate cost. The moms are well lightedby a sky-light and furnished with gas, water, charts, anddiagrams necessary for full illuctration of this importantbranch of medical education.

As a result of the passage of the recent anatomy act, material is more easily obtained; and owing to the greatefficiency of the Demonstrator and his assistants, we havehad an abundance of material, and can guarantee the sameill the future.

Dean of the Faculty. It was mainly through his influencethat the College was founded, and for several years beforehis death he was the sole survi vor of the original Faculty. His wise counsel and paternal kindness endeared him to allhis associates, and his departure will be mourned by themand all friends of the College.

The office of Dean has been wisely filled by the electionof STARLING LOVING, M.D., Professor of the Practice ofMedicine, a graduate of the class of 1R49. and for manyyears closely identified with the College. From his wellknown energy and ability, we may safely predict a seasonof progress and success for the institution over which hehas been called to preside.
