Independence to the time w

calamities like earthquakes, floods, droughts, the A

rya Sam

aj has

always been on the fore front.

The contribution of S

wam

mense in

eradicating social taboos and awakening self-respect and self-

reliance by preaching the 3Ss. —

Sw

adharma, S

warajya and

Sw

abhasha. in a book written in H

indi called ‘Satyarth P

rakash’.

It was in the sphere of education that the A

rya Sam

contributed the most. S

wam

were infallible, eternal unchangeable and divine. T

When I w

as a kid, my m

om liked to m

ake breakfast food fordinner

every now

and

then. A

nd I

remem

ber, one

night in

particular, when she had m

ade breakfast after a long, hard day atw

ork.

On that evening so long ago, m

y mom

placed a plate of bread,fruits

and extrem

ely burned

biscuits in

front of

my

dad. I

remem

ber waiting to see if anyone noticed! Y

et all my dad did

was reach for his biscuit, sm

ile at my m

om and ask m

e how m

yday w

as at school. I don’t remem

ber what I told him

that night, butI do rem

ember w

atching him sm

ear butter and jelly on that biscuitand eat every bite!

When I got up from

the table that evening, I remem

ber hearingm

y mom

apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. A

nd I’llnever forget w

hat he said: “Honey, I love burned biscuits.”

Later that night, I went to kiss D

addy good night and I asked himif he really liked his biscuits burned. H

e wrapped m

e in his arms

and said, “Your M

omm

a put in a hard day at work today and she’s

real tired. And besides —

a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!”

Life is full of imperfect things... and im

perfect people. I’m not the

best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversariesjust like everyone else. B

ut what I’ve learned over the years is

that learning to accept each others faults — and choosing to

celebrate each others differences — is one of the m

ost important

keys to creating a healthy, growing and lasting relationship.

And that’s m

y prayer for you today. That you w

ill learn to take thegood, the bad, and the ugly parts in a relationship w

here a burntbiscuit isn’t a deal-breaker!

We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is

the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child

or friendship!

“Don’t put the key to your happiness in som

eone else’s pocket —keept it in your ow

n.”
