The Word of the Lord

. First Reading: Sirach 27:4-7 This reading explains that quality and truth in conversation is a test for humankind. Only after listening to a person's reasoning can we know the mind of another.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Paul speaks of the mystery of transformation that is victory over death when our mortality puts on immortality. We are encouraged by Paul to be steadfast and immovable, filling our lives with the work of the Lord.

Gospel: Luke 6:39-45 Today, Jesus teaches through the use of parables, first encouraging us to be like the teacher, understand that the blind cannot lead the blind. Jesus also reminds us that only the heart's good treasure produces good. In order to remain steadfast, we must heed what Jesus tells us. If we hear God's word, our foundation will be strong, unshaken, steadfast, built upon rock.

Praise no one before he speaks, for it is then that people are tested. (Sir27:7) Our first reading invites us to reflect on how speech reveals the nature of our heart. The connection of the lips with the heart can be found elsewhere in Sacred Scriptures. This people pays me lip service but their heart is far from me. (Mt15:8) …this people draws near with words only and honors me with their lips alone, though their hearts are far from me. (Is29:13) Our speech reveals our inner self

In a similar way, our fruits reveal our inner self as well. The just one shall flourish like the palm tree, like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow. (Ps92:13) The fruit of the tree shows the care it has had…(Sir27:6) In today’s gospel, in one of the parables, Jesus says: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. (Lk6:43)

Our words and our fruits, reveal the formation of our conscience. In the Vatican II document, Gaudium et spes (16), we read “Conscience is man’s most secret core, and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths.” “A well-formed conscience is upright and truthful. It formulates its judgments in conformity with the true good willed by the wisdom of the Creator.” (CC1798)

“The Word of God is a light for our path. We must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice. This is how a moral conscience is formed.” (CC1802)

“We must examine our conscience before the Lord’s Cross. We are assisted by the gifts of the Holy Spirit,

aided by the witness or advice of others and guided by the authoritative teaching of the Church.” (CC1785)

We see the connection of today’s Scriptures with the moral life that we are called to live, continually forming our conscience. “The formation of conscience is a lifelong task…and engenders peace of heart.” (CC1784) Through prayer, the Sacraments, Sacred Scriptures and the teaching of the church, we receive God’s grace in this lifelong journey of forming our conscience. God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

Bereavement Group

There is a support group for those grieving the death of a loved one here at St. John the Apostle. The group provides a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. If you are interested in joining us, or if you would like more information about the group, time and location of the next meeting, contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or [email protected]. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Children’s Liturgy

The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253

Do you want to learn about the Bible? Examine the four pillars of our Catholic Catechism: faith, morality, prayer and the sacraments through the Scriptures. St. John the Apostle’s Frank Tremmel will be instructing the session, providing us with an overview to help us know and experience the power of Word of God. The next session on March 5th will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the teacher’s lounge. Attendance will also qualify towards the Doctrinal portion of Catechist Certification. Contact Deacon Mike to register or for more information, 732-388-1253 or [email protected]

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substiantially”, or as whole, is as serious obligation.

3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 10, 2019 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 16, 2019. *Canon 920, L. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.
