180 Degree Rule

What is the 180° rule?• In a nutshell the 180° rule is the principle that in a scene where there are

two characters, both should always keep their left/right relationship to eachother.

• Image there is an imaginary line running through both of the characters in the scene, as shown by the dashed line on the picture in the bottom right corner, if the camera passes over this line then the shot is then called quie simply ‘crossing the line.’

• The new shot that is now being taken is called the reverse angle, as now the to characters are on the different side, the character that was originally on the right is now on the left and the same applies to the character that was on the left.

The 180° in Action

• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBPw9C57TuU• After watching that it is clear what the 180 degree rule is. • If the camera changes sides then it would simply confuse the

watcher because the person would be looking and talking the other way.

What not to do

• When shooting the shot reverse shot, you must shoot from the same shoulder

• Never shoot from the opposite side it will disorientate the viewer.

Here we can see a correct shot reverse shot, which shows the person from over the shoulder, the camera stays on the same side.

The Reverse Angle

• The reverse angle is shot taken when then the camera crosses the line.
