    European Hazardous Location Approval

    European Zone 2 Certification

    (The follow ing applies w hen the product bears the EEx M arking.)

    This equipm ent is intended for use in potentially explosive

    atm ospheres as defined by European U nion D irective 94/9/EC.

    The LCIE (Laboratoire Central des Industries Electriques) certifies that

    this equipm ent has been found to com ply w ith the Essential H ealth

    and Safety Requirem ents relating to the design and construction of

    Category 3 equipm ent intended for use in potentially explosive

    atm ospheres, given in Annex II to this D irective. The exam ination

    and test results are recorded in confidential report N o. 28 682 010.

    Com pliance w ith the Essential H ealth and Safety Requirem ents has

    been assured by com pliance w ith EN 50021.

    IMPORTANT This equipm ent is not resistant to sunlight or other

    sources of U V radiation.

    The secondary of a current transform er shall not be

    open-circuited w hen applied in Class I, Zone 2

    environm ents.

    Equipm ent of lesser Enclosure Type Rating m ust be

    installed in an enclosure providing at least IP54

    protection w hen applied in Class I, Zone 2

    environm ents.

    This equipm ent shall be used w ithin its specified ratings

    defined by Allen-Bradley.

    Provision shall be m ade to prevent the rated voltage

    from being exceeded by transient disturbances of m orethan 40% w hen applied in Class I, Zone 2 environm ents.

    Environment and Enclosure

    ATTENTION This equipm ent is intended for use in a Pollution D egree2 industrial environm ent, in overvoltage Category II

    applications (as defined in IEC publication 60664-1), at

    altitudes up to 2000 m eters w ithout derating.

    This equipm ent is considered G roup 1, Class A industrial

    equipm ent according to IEC/CISPR Publication 11.

    W ithout appropriate precautions, there m ay be potential

    difficulties ensuring electrom agnetic com patibility in otherenvironm ents due to conducted as w ell as radiated

    disturbance.

    This equipm ent is supplied as open-type equipm ent. It

    m ust be m ounted w ithin an enclosure that is suitably

    designed for those specific environm ental conditions that

    w ill be present and appropriately designed to prevent

    personal injury resulting from accessibility to live parts.The interior of the enclosure m ust be accessible only by

    the use of a tool. Subsequent sections of this publication

    About the ControlLogix ControlNet Bridge Module

    W e designed the enhanced ControlLogix C ontrolN et m odule for

    applications that require higher capacity, and w e recom m end that

    you use this m odule w ith ControlLogix controllers to:

    • expand system s for tw ice as m uch I/O control.

    • effectively double the am ount of Produce/Consum e tags that

    can be transferred betw een controllers.

    • speed up existing applications to run faster.

    U se the 1756-CN 2 ControlLogix ControlN et m odule for stand-alone

    applications only. Applications requiring controller redundancy m ust

    use the 1756-CN B m odule.

    ATTENTION This equipm ent is sensitive to electrostatic discharge,w hich can cause internal dam age and affect norm al

    operation. Follow these guidelines w hen you handle this

    equipm ent:

    • Touch a grounded object to discharge potential static.

    • W ear an approved grounding w riststrap.

    • D o not touch connectors or pins on com ponent

    boards.

    • D o not touch circuit com ponents inside the

    equipm ent.

    • If available, use a static-safe w orkstation.

    • W hen not in use, store the equipm ent in appropriate

    static-safe packaging.

    Before You Begin

    Before you install the m odule, m ake sure you:

    • know how to handle the m odule (see Preventing Electrostatic

    D ischarge).

    • know the type of ControlN et netw ork.

    There are tw o types of scheduled traffic netw orks for

    ControlN et: single-keeper netw orks and m ulti-keeper

    netw orks. The 1756-CN 2 and 1756-CN 2R bridges are

    m ulti-keeper capable.

    You m ust m atch the keeper to the type of netw ork. Refer to

    the ControlN et M odules in Logix5000 C ontrol System s U ser

    M anual, publication CN ET-U M 001, for m ore inform ation.

    Set the Module’s Network Address Switches

    U se your fingers or a sm all screw driver to set the m odule’s netw ork

    address sw itches. For m odules in a standalone chassis, you m ust

    specify a unique ControlN et netw ork address. You can select an

    address of 01 to 99 for m odules in a standalone chassis. N ote that 00

    is an invalid ControlN et address.

    Prepare the Chassis for Module Installation

    Before you install the 1756-CN 2 m odule, you m ust install and connect

    a ControlLogix chassis and pow er supply. A 4-slot chassis w ith a

    pow er supply is show n below .

    These m odules are com patible w ith all versions of chassis and pow er

    Determine Module Slot Location

    This figure show s chassis slot num bering in a 4-slot chassis. Slot 0 isthe first slot and is alw ays the leftm ost slot in the rack (the first slot to

    the right of the pow er supply). You can use any size ControlLogix

    chassis and install the m odule in any slot. You can also install

    m ultiple bridge m odules in the sam e chassis. You can install as m any

    m odules as your pow er supply can accom m odate (that is, the

    num ber for w hich the pow er supply is rated).

     Install the Module

    1 . Align the circuit board w ith top and bottom guides in thechassis.

    2. Slide the m odule into the chassis.

    M ake sure the m odule backplane connector properly connects

    to the chassis backplane.

    The m odule is properly installed w hen it is flush w ith the pow er

    supply or other installed m odules.

    ATTENTION D o not force the m odule into the backplane connector. If

    you cannot seat the m odule w ith firm pressure, check the

    alignm ent. Forcing the m odule into the chassis can

    dam age the backplane connector or the m odule.

    Connect the Module to the Network 

    You can connect the m odule to the ControlN et netw ork by using a

    tap (1786-TPR, 1786-TPS, 1786-TPY R, 1786-TPY S) or a netw ork

    access cable (1786-CP).

    W hen connecting the bridge m odule to a ControlN et netw ork, youshould also refer to this docum entation:

    Connect to t he Net w ork Using a Tap 

    Follow these steps to connect the m odule to the netw ork w ith a tap.

    1 . Rem ove and save the dust caps from the ControlN et taps.

    2. Connect the tap’s straight or right-angle connector to the

    m odule’s BN C connector.

    TIP For netw ork connections w e recom m end taps w ith a

    straight connector (1786-TPS or 1786-TPY S) because of

    the location of the B N C connectors on the bottom of them odule.

    ATTENTION D o not allow any m etal portions of the tap to contact any

    conductive m aterial. If you disconnect the tap from the

    m odule, place the dust cap back on the straight or

    right-angle connector to prevent the connector from

    accidentally contacting a m etallic grounded surface.

    Connect a Programming Terminal to the Net w ork w ith 1786-CP Cable 

    To connect a program m ing term inal to the netw ork using a 1786-CP

    cable, you have these options:

    • U se a 1784-K TC, 1784-K TCx, or 1784-PCC com m unication cardand a 1786-CP cable (pictured)

     

    WARNING If you connect or disconnect the com m unications cablew ith pow er applied to this m odule or any device on the

    netw ork, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an

    explosion in hazardous location installations.

    IMPORTANT To use redundant m edia, all nodes m ust support

    redundant m edia.

    If you are using redundant m edia, connect the channel

    of each partner to the sam e netw ork segm ent.

    The 1786-CP cable can be plugged into any ControlN et product’s

    netw ork access port (N AP) to provide program m ing capability on the

    ControlN et netw ork. A program m ing term inal connected through this

    cable is counted as a node and m ust have a unique netw ork address.

    ATTENTION U se a 1786-CP cable w hen connecting a program m ingterm inal to the netw ork through netw ork access ports.

    U sing a com m ercially available RJ-style cable could result

    in netw ork failure.

    Remove the Module

    Follow these steps to rem ove the m odule:

    1 . Push on the upper and low er tabs to disengage them .

    2. Slide the m odule out of the chassis.

     

    IMPORTANT If you are replacing an existing m odule w ith an identical

    one, and you w ant to resum e identical system operation,

    you m ust install the new m odule w ith the sam e

    ControlN et address in the sam e slot.

    Install or Remove the Module Under Power

    You can install or rem ove the m odule w hile chassis pow er is applied

    if you observe these precautions.

    Troubleshoot the Modules

    The m odules have these diagnostic indicators:

    WARNING W hen you insert or rem ove the m odule w hile backplane

    pow er is on, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause

    an explosion in hazardous location installations.

    Be sure that pow er is rem oved or the area is

    nonhazardous before proceeding. Repeated electrical

    arcing causes excessive w ear to contacts on both the

    m odule and its m ating connector. W orn contacts m ay

    create electrical resistance that can affect m odule

    operation.

    diagnostic inform ation as sum m arized in the D iagnostics table.

    The ControlN et channel status indicators appear in one of these

    states:

    • Steady - indicator is on continuously in the defined state.

    • Alternating - the tw o indicators alternate betw een the tw o

    defined states at the sam e tim e (applies to both indicators

    view ed together). The tw o indicators are alw ays in opposite

    states, out of phase.

    • Flashing - the indicator alternates betw een the tw o defined

    states (applies to each indicator view ed independent of the

    other). If both indicators are flashing, they m ust flash together,

    in phase.
