OPENING HYMN “Before You, Lord, We Bow” (LSB966) Before You, Lord, we bow, Our God who reigns above And rules the world below, Boundless in pow’r and love. Our thanks we bring In joy and praise, Our hearts we raise To You, our King! The nation You have blest May well Your love declare, From foes and fears at rest, Protected by Your care. For this bright day, For this fair land-Gifts of Your hand- Our thanks we pay. May ev’ry mountain height, Each vale and forest green, Shine in Your Word’s pure light,And its rich fruits be seen! May ev’ry tongue Be tuned to praise And join to raise A grateful song. Earth, hear your Maker’s voice; Your great Redeemer own; Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone. Cast down your pride, Your sin deplore, And bow before The Crucified. And when in pow’r He comes, Oh, may our native land From all its rending tombs Send forth a glorious band, A countless throng, With joy to sing To heav’n’s high King Salvation’s song! INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: We confess our sins to the Lord, humbly asking Him for the sake

of His Son Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. People: Almighty God, merciful Father, we confess to You that we

have sinned against You and our neighbor in thought, word, and deed. We have sinned many times when we have heard Your Word without putting it into practice, when we have said, "Lord, Lord," without doing Your will, and when we have built on the sand of our own weak wisdom instead of the rock of Your Word. In Your mercy forgive us and lead us in the way of eternal life. Amen.

Pastor: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified

by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." Romans 3:23

Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you. In the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. [Please be seated] HYMN OF PRAISE “Praise to the Lord, The Almighty” (LSB790)

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is your health and salvation! Let all who hear Now to His temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration! Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely His goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew What the Almighty can do As with His love He befriends you. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before Him! Let the Amen Sound from His people again; Gladly forever adore Him!

PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: We pray. All: Lord of all power and might, author and giver of all good

things, instill in our hearts the love of Your name, impress on our minds the teachings of Your Word, and increase in our lives all that is holy and just; Grant that the ministry of our music and worship that we lift up to You is pleasing to Your ears, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORD OLD TESTAMENT Ezekiel 33:7-9 Reader: The Old Testament reading for today is from the 33rd chapter

of Ezekiel.

Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 32:1-7 Reader: We read the Psalm of the day responsively. Reader: Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose

sins are covered. People: Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count

against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. Reader: When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning

all day long. People: For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength

was sapped as in the heat of summer. Reader: Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my

iniquity. People: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” Reader: And you forgave the guilt of my sin. People: Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be

found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.

Reader: You are my hiding place; People: you will protect me from trouble and surround me with

songs of deliverance.

EPISTLE Romans 13: 1-10 Reader: The Epistle is from the 13th chapter of Romans.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. [Please stand] HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 18:1-20 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 18th chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord! At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like

Page 8: 17330 South Politics of Love” · 2020. 9. 6. · honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the

8

little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[f] loosed in heaven. “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. [Please be seated]

HYMN “Lord, Help Us Walk Your Servant Way” (LSB857)

Lord, help us walk Your servant way Wherever love may lead And, bending low, forgetting self, Each serve the other’s need. You came to earth, O Christ, as Lord, But pow’r You laid aside. You lived Your years in servanthood; In lowliness You died. No golden scepter but a towel You place within the hands Of those who seek to follow You And live by Your commands. You bid us bend our human pride Nor count ourselves above The lowest place, the meanest task That waits the gift of love. Lord, help us walk Your servant way Wherever love may lead And, bending low, forgetting self, Each serve the other’s need.

CONFESSION OF FAITH NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

HYMN “Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us” (LSB821)

Lord of glory, You have bought us With Your lifeblood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice; And with that have freely given Blessings countless as the sand To the_unthankful and the evil With Your own unsparing hand. Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to give You Gladly, freely of Your own. With the sunshine of Your goodness Melt our thankless hearts of stone Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by You, at length believe That more happy and more blessèd ’Tis to give than to receive. Wondrous honor You have given To our humblest charity In Your own mysterious sentence, “You have done it all to Me.” Can it be, O gracious Master, That You deign for alms to sue, Saying by Your poor and needy, “Give as I have giv’n to you”? Lord of glory, You have bought us With Your lifeblood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sacrifice. Give us faith to trust You boldly, Hope, to stay our souls on You; But, oh, best of all Your graces, With Your love our love renew.

PRAYERS Pastor: Lord of all creation, we thank You for creating this world and giving

us everything we need to sustain this body and life. Accept these offerings as our response to Your continued love and kindness. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Lord Christ, we praise and thank You for bringing salvation and

deliverance to all who believe in You. Guide and guard all missionaries around the globe who live their lives as Your hands, feet, voice, and ears in foreign lands. Lead us to those in our circles who remain foreigners to Your kingdom, that they may experience Your life-changing love, mercy and compassion. Let us pray to the Lord,

People: hear our prayer. Pastor: O Lord Jesus, Son of David, as You healed the daughter of the

Canaanite woman, have mercy on those who are suffering in mind, body, and spirit, especially those among us who are ill whom we’ve lifted up to You previously, and those we name in our hearts. Give them comfort, strength, and healing. Be their very strength for what lies ahead. Let us pray to the Lord,

People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Lord of the nations, in these days we do not experience much

peace as nation rises up against nation, children rebel against their parents, a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, neighbor against neighbor. Bring Your peace to the ends of the earth. Grant Your blessings of protection for our service members who bravely serve in difficult and dangerous circumstances. Let us pray to the Lord,

People: hear our prayer. (Intercessory Prayers)

SACRAMENT The Lord's Supper is a gracious gift instituted by Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a means of receiving God’s grace. We believe that in the holy supper, the true body and blood of the Savior, along with the bread and wine, comes to us. We are encouraged by Jesus to commune frequently and God tells us through St. Paul that we must examine ourselves in preparation for a worthy reception of the sacrament. This includes a confession of our sins, a proclamation of our faith, and a determination to lead a more godly life in the future. If you also acknowledge your sinfulness and your need for a Savior, and recognize Christ’s physical presence in the bread and wine, we invite you to join us at the Lord’s table. PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Pastor: Almighty God, Maker of all things and giver of all gifts, You created us for Yourself but we chose to go our own way. When our rebellion led only to death, You did not condemn us as we deserved but sought us out in mercy and love. In the fullness of time, You sent forth Your own Son to release from sin's captivity all who suffer its death. He lived in obedience as we could not and He died in our place the death we should have died. He rose in triumph to restore us to You for all eternity. Assembled in His name we receive His body and blood for forgiveness and grace, the gift of Himself and the grace that nurtures us to eternal life, as He Himself has promised, ready to receive Him when He comes again in glory.

People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

BENEDICTION Pastor: The LORD bless you and keep you.

The LORD make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look upon you with favor, and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26

People: Amen.

WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me."

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

[Please be seated] AGNUS DEI Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, Redeemer, Redeemer of the world: Give us Your peace, give us Your peace.

“As We Gather at Your Table” (WR695) As we gather at your Table, as we listen to your Word, help us know, O God, your presence; let our hearts and minds be stirred. Nourish us with sacred story till we claim it as our own; teach us through this holy banquet how to make Love's victory known. Turn our worship into witness in the sacrament of life; send us forth to love and serve you, bringing peace where there is strife. Give us, Christ, your great compassion to forgive as you forgave; may we still behold your image in the world you died to save. Gracious Spirit, help us summon other guests to share that feast where triumphant Love will welcome those who had been last and least. There no more will envy blind us nor will pride our peace destroy, as we join with saints and angels to repeat the sounding joy. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FOR A CHUCKLE –When someone asks you, “A penny for your thoughts,” and you put your two cents in, what happens to the other penny?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Just be — and be still Various versions of the following sentiment are posted online: “I am a

human being, not a human doing. It’s okay to just be sometimes.” Many of us get anxious if we think we’re not doing enough, but peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh insists it’s not a waste of time to just be: “To be alive, to be peaceful, to be joyful, to be loving … is what the world needs most.” During the pandemic, when people were urged to stay home to slow the virus’ spread, we had to think hard about how to continue being the church while limited in what we could go out and “do.” Yet church leaders reminded us that we were actually loving our neighbors by staying home — by being less active. It’s sometimes okay — ideal, even — to just be. In quieting our bodies, minds and hearts, we may find ourselves more often in prayer, more aware of God’s presence and more nourished for when the time is right to again take up more active forms of ministry, peacemaking and love. “In quietness and trust is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15, NIV). —Heidi Mann

Christianity is the only religion of the world to insist that reconciliation with the creator cannot ever be accomplished by our performance. Only through the revelation of a Savior, who would be the substitute sacrifice for all of our wrongdoing and make us right with God, can we finally overcome our sense of separation from the Almighty. This is a gift and promise of life that we rejoice in and share with Christians around the world. We share with all Christians the desire that everyone would come to know Jesus and experience a life under “new management” – the grace and purpose of God. Trinity is a member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. We enjoy a blessed confessional heritage of Biblical Christianity with over 65 million Lutherans around the world and over 7 million Lutherans in the U.S. alone. What we know and believe comes only from the Bible, which is God’s inspired Word. While the Bible is certainly our guide for holy living, the primary purpose of the Bible is to reveal Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We believe every Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church is a “little Easter”, a celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday in both worship services. We believe the forgiveness and strength of faith we are promised through receiving the very body and blood of Christ is so greatly needed by all of God’s people, for we are truly a community of wounded healers. For a Christian Church to be anything else than a place of common fellowship and unity and a source of strength for our fragile faith is to fail its God-ordained purpose and intent. Our pastors would like to be of service to you in any way they can. Feel free to call the church office or speak with Pastor Dan or Pastor Blair directly if you wish to find out more about the church or have more personal needs of a spiritual nature.
