Building for the Future

2019 was a year of great change at University of Toronto Press and we are entering the 2020s with even more dynamic growth in mind. We continue to take the press in new and interesting directions while maintaining the strengths that have built our global reputation. While it’s impossible to provide a comprehensive review of our recent successes, here are a few milestones:

The expansion of our role in open access projects through various partnerships, including a new partnership with University of Toronto Libraries

The launch of two new trade imprints aimed at expanding UTP’s tradition of publishing leading non-fiction but with an emphasis on reaching a wider, general audience

A continued development of our sales and marketing practices, adding the flexibility to adapt to new markets and the expertise that comes with experimentation

The work that we do is designed to disseminate the work of our authors to the widest possible audience and to advance knowledge for the betterment of society. In this report you’ll find highlights of how we grew to meet these goals throughout 2019 and into a new decade.

Our authors are at the heart of what we do. We hope you enjoy this update and are inspired to work with us in the future!

Open Access

In 2019, UTP and the University of Toronto Libraries announced the formation of a new partnership to support the open access publication of three books authored by University of Toronto scholars in each of the next three years. Two books have now been released as part of the University of Toronto Press Open Monographs Collection with the third releasing in April 2020.

Also in 2019, UTP Book Publishing launched a Gold Open Access publishing model available for research monographs. UTP OA Books will be published with a Creative Commons licence (we recommend CC-BY-NC-ND) with a PDF ebook available for download. In most cases, UTP will also produce standard print and ebook versions of OA books to be sold and marketed like other non-OA titles, and authors receive royalties on sales through these channels.

Interested authors should discuss the appropriateness of their book for the UTP OA Books program with their Acquisitions Editor.

Knowledge Unlatched

UTP continues to participate in open access through our partnership with Knowledge Unlatched. There are currently fifteen UTP books openly available, with five more being added in early 2020.

Science Publishing

Stephen Jones joined UTP in November 2018 as Science and Technology Acquisitions Editor. The press has published in these areas previously, but the creation of this new, dedicated role was a strategic move to bring focus to our editorial direction. Stephen acquires scholarly works, textbooks, and general interest titles across the whole spectrum of science and technology subject areas, including engineering, science and technology studies (STS), geology and earth sciences, chemistry, physics, biology, energy, and mathematics.

Being a Scientist, the first book on Stephen’s list to be published, came out in November 2019 and is a textbook designed to teach soft skills to scientists, covering such topics as ethics, the philosophical bases of scientific methods, library research, peer review, and proposal writing.

Some of the exciting titles currently in the pipeline include The Story of CO2: Big Ideas for a Small Molecule by Geoffrey A. Ozin and Mireille F. Ghoussoub (both at the University of Toronto); a textbook in electrical and computer engineering using the programming language C for making embedded systems; and a heavily illustrated book on plate tectonics and John Tuzo Wilson, who is considered the father of the theory.

“It’s an exciting time to be acquiring for the press,” Stephen says. “I’m lucky enough to meet authors investigating a vast range of hugely fascinating topics such as junk DNA and evolution, the uses and abuses of social media, biomedical engineering for amputees, citizen science and environmental monitoring, and planets that orbit their stars in harmonic resonance. I love talking to authors about their passion and working with them to bring that enthusiasm to a wider audience.”

Stephen Jones can be contacted at [email protected].

New Trade Imprints at UTP

In 2019, UTP laid the groundwork for the 2020 launch of two exciting new imprints:

A non-fiction trade imprint that will publish between four and eight titles annually, all written by established authors from around the globe.

The new trade imprint’s inaugural title is:

Solved: How the World’s Great Cities Are Fixing the Climate Crisis by David MillerWe can’t wait for national leaders to save the planet, says former Mayor of Toronto David Miller. It’s time to pin our hopes for global change on cities. By chronicling the stories of how cities have taken action to meet and exceed emissions targets laid out in the Paris Agreement, Miller empowers readers to fix the climate crisis. Publication Date: October 2020

New Jewish Press, launching with four new titles in 2020, touches on topics that are timely and rooted in empathy and inclusivity. The goal of the imprint is to bring the Jewish community together with strong, smart books that demand critical thinking and conversation.

The first two titles in the newly-launched NJP imprint are:

The A–Z of Intermarriage by Rabbi Denise HandlarskiIn this wise and witty guide to navigating an interfaith marriage, Handlarski presents real-life anecdotes drawn from her work as a rabbi to show couples how they can have, in her words, “less oy and more joy.” Now Available

The Conflict over the Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate by Kenneth S. Stern What is it about the Israel/Palestine conflict that makes people on university campuses go off the deep end? Stern explores this timely question and champions the one thing that can bring the two camps closer together: free speech. Publication Date: March 2020

Going Graphic

Another exciting area of innovation at UTP is our investment in new books and series in graphic novel form. Starting with the launch of the ethnoGRAPHIC series – and the publication of the first bestselling title in the series, Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship, and Revolution by Sherine Hamdy and Coleman Nye – we have continued to experiment with new and interesting ways of combining scholarly research with comics.

Here are a few other examples:

Things That Art: A Graphic Menagerie of Enchanting Curiosity by Lochlann Jain An artful yet playful look at lists and categories with accompanying commentary. This book includes 59 original drawings and 4 essays.

Gringo Love: Stories of Sex Tourism in Brazil by Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan Based on original ethnographic research and presented in graphic form, Gringo Love explores the hopes, dreams, and experiences of women in Brazil against a backdrop of entrenched social inequality.

Amplify: Graphic Narratives of Feminist Resistance by Norah Bowman In this highly original text – a collaboration between a college professor, a playwright, and an artist – graphic storytelling offers an emotionally resonant way for students to understand and engage with feminism and resistance.

Diagnosis: Truths and Tales by Annemarie Goldstein Jutel This book shares stories told from the perspectives of those who receive diagnoses and those who deliver them, and includes a powerful section on “The Graphic Diagnosis.”

Consequential Art: Comics Culture in Contemporary Spain edited by Samuel Amago and Matthew J. Marr While not graphic in form, the essays collected in Consequential Art account for several key ways in which a range of comics practitioners have deployed the image-text connection to interrogate significant cultural issues in Spain.

Rights Sales

In 2019, we signed fifteen translation rights licenses and three English territorial rights licenses for UTP titles. Jane Kelly travelled to the London Book Fair, and Marilyn McCormack attended From Page to Screen, an event hosted by Ontario Creates to match publishers and producers, and the Frankfurt Book Fair. In Frankfurt, Marilyn met with twenty-five publishers and agencies representing twelve different countries. As always, the new titles in our Rotman-UTP imprint were particularly popular, as were our upcoming trade titles.

Our most-translated title, Claude Lévi-Strauss’s classic Myth and Meaning, this year reached its tenth language, Polish, alongside the existing Chinese (complex), Chinese (simplified), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish translations, plus US and UK territorial editions.

Two translations have been licensed for one of our most popular books, The Slow Professor by Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber: Latin-American Spanish and Chinese (simplified).

Making a Contribution

In 2019, we found ways to have fun while also raising money for important charities. Here are a couple of examples:

June was chock-full of Pride-related activities at UTP: from our redesigned social media account pages to our blog and website, we definitely wore our pride. At the heart of it all, we promoted VIVA MAC: AIDS, Fashion, and the Philanthropic Practices of MAC Cosmetics by Andrea Benoit. The book was successfully launched at Glad Day Bookshop as an official Toronto Pride event, and proceeds of sales in June were donated to Casey House.

For more information about Casey House or to make a donation visit www.caseyhouse.com.

December typically means holiday baking, and yet again UTP turned good treats into good-will during our annual Great Office Cookie Bake Off. Amateur bakers from across the Book Publishing Division participated in this judged competition, and UTP staff paid for the right to sample the contest entries. All proceeds were donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

For more information about the Daily Bread Food Bank or to make a donation visit www.dailybread.ca.

““Publish with UTP

“Publishing with the University of Toronto Press is an unmitigated delight. Beyond offering a prestigious venue for work in my field, my editors have been unfailingly sharp-eyed, cordial, and efficient. The press’s production values are moreover second to none. UTP not only treats its authors with respect; the end result is a thing of real beauty – a crucial factor when you write, as I do, about visual as well as literary and philosophical art.”

– Christopher Braider

“The press has a marvelous team, with an editorial staff that is meticulous yet open to new ways of doing things and taking risky approaches. The production staff has worked with me to understand my aesthetic goals, and the promotion and marketing people are great listeners. Three words to describe the teams working with the press are caring, responsive, and risk-takers.”

– Rosa Bruno-Jofré

“Working with UTP on my latest book, The Hotel: Occupied Space, has been fantastic. I received strong support from my editor throughout the rigorous evaluation process – which entails expert readers and then UTP’s own Manuscript Review Committee – and then was thrilled by the physical layout and production of the book and its subsequent marketing. UTP receives my highest recommendation.”

– Robert A. Davidson

“All the UTP people I’ve worked with in editorial, production, and marketing have been extremely professional and personable. When thinking about writing textbooks for the North American market, I’ve dabbled with offers from other university and commercial presses, but always come back to UTP. All my experiences here have been very positive.”

– Robert J. Muckle

“Working with UTP is always a pleasure and my experience has been defined by consistent excellence. Supportive and knowledgeable editors and rigorous peer review process combined with a world-class reputation make for an exceptional experience.”

– Jane Nicholas

“My experience with UTP has been consistently positive. From the first query through review and production to promotion, I have always felt well supported. The team is very professional, works diligently to timelines, and is respectful of my input. I have been really pleased with the quality of the artifact produced by the press and regularly brag about the beauty of the cover art.”

– Jenn Stephenson
