Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County Program and Events List

(* designates a Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Program)

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County offers programs in five different Core Program Areas:

Character and Leadership Development

Education and Career Development

Health and Life Skills

The Arts

Sports, Fitness and Recreation

The Club also offers a variety of special programs or events that fall under the

category of Specialized Program Initiatives.

This publication contains a list of programs and events offered at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County.

This list is not all inclusive and some of the programs are only offered at one Club location or another. Some programs are available year round while others are offered only for a period of time or one day each year. Some programs and sports leagues require an additional fee.

In addition to the following list of formal programs and events, the Club offers many opportunities for members to participate in a variety of less structured activities in the different areas of the Club. Gamesrooms have pool, foosball, air hockey, and carpetball tables; board games, card games; Legos; and numerous other games and activities. In our gyms, members can play basketball, dodge ball, whiffleball, 2-square or 4-square, jump rope, have races, or participate in any number of games or activities offered daily. Clubs also provide areas for members to enjoy refreshments and socialize.

Our Clubs have computer labs where members can do research, work on digital projects, or surf the web. A variety of arts and crafts opportunities are offered at each Club. Our Jeffers Club and Central Club each have dedicated rooms for teenagers where they can gather to socialize or do activities away from the younger members. Some of our Clubs also provide separate space, equipment, and activities for younger members (6-8 year old).

We encourage our members to participate in as many programs as they are eligible for and enjoy. We feel that the more a young person is involved at the Club, the more he or she will want to attend. As a result, we know the more frequently a youth attends the Club, the greater the opportunity for us to have a positive impact on that child.

Halloween Party – The Halloween Party is our largest annual event.

Complete with games, activities, costume contest and haunted house, this event is open to the public and typically draws hundreds of kids and their families to the Jeffers Club for Halloween fun. The Club is decorated with Halloween decor and the staff add to the atmosphere by being in costume.

Mother / Daughter Tea – The Mother / Daughter Tea is an annual event

held near Mother’s Day at the Jeffers Club. It is designed to be an opportunity for our girls to accompany their mothers to an affair where they can dress up and celebrate Motherhood while enjoying finger food and drinks. A short program is presented where our selected Mother of the Year is honored and the oldest mother in attendance is recognized.

Talent Show – The Talent Show is an annual event allowing members

to showcase their unique talents. Open to the public, members compete in age groups for prizes. Area personalities are recruited to be judges.

St. Patrick’s Day Party – The St. Patrick’s Day Party is geared toward members ages 10 and younger. The party includes games, crafts, cookies, and punch and has traditionally been done in conjunction with a 10 and younger dance. The youth who wears the most green receives a trophy.

Summer Food Service Program – During the summer program period, the Club offers free meals to any child though the Indiana Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program. The Club provides these meals at our Clubs and various community apartment complexes.

Turkey Shoot – An annual event that takes place the week before Thanksgiving, the Turkey Shoot is an opportunity for members to win a turkey for their family by shooting “Nerf” darts at a turkey target. Members must pay 10¢ per turn and compete by age group.

Valentine’s Dance – The Valentine’s Dance is an annual event held near Valentine’s Day. It is open to any youth ages 10-14. Youth are encouraged to dress up. In the days preceding the dance, members vote for a King and Queen of the dance.

Valentine’s Party – An annual event, the Valentine’s Party is geared toward youth ages 9 and under. The party includes games, crafts, and refreshments. A prize is presented to the youth who wears the most red.

• Intentional Tracking – Clubs regularly check the warning signs of withdrawal from school (attendance, behavior, and course failure) and work with the youth to develop a timely intervention that focuses on decreasing the negative risks while increasing the protective factors (i.e., strengths) through the mentor relationship, problem solving, and persistence.

• Enhancing Club-School-Home Partnership and Communication – Clubs and schools work together to share information and resources. Clubs work to engage parents in their child’s education.
