REGISTRATION & PAYMENT POLICIES

Members of the Center may choose to pay for school-year-long** classes in three installments. **Eligible classes currently include graduated dance and graduated art classes.

The first installment is due, in full, upon registration, and includes the required 25% down payment. The second installment is due, in full, no later than 10 weeks after the start of class. The final installment is due, in full, no later than 20 weeks after the start of class.

Dance students will not be allowed to participate in the spring dance recital unless their accounts are paid, in full, no later than 2 weeks before the recital, or acceptable payment arrangements have been made with the Center’s management.

Students with special circumstances or seeking exceptions to the policies above must speak with a member of management. Management can be reached by phone or in person between 9 am and 5 pm, on weekdays when the Center is open.

• Registration may be completed on-line, by phone, or by visiting 171 Cedar Arts Center. Please contact the Center directly to enroll.

• Instructors cannot register students, or hold spaces for them in classes.

• Registrations should be made no later than 48 hours before a class is scheduled to begin. Class enrollment is assessed at this time, and under-enrolled classes will be canceled.

• Students registering on-line fewer than 48 hours before a class is slated to begin may not receive notification if a class is canceled.

• A 25%, non-refundable* down payment of each class fee is required in order to register.

• Full payment is due no later than 48 hours prior to the start of each class.

• Full payment is required when registering on-line. To make a down payment only, please call or visit the Center during business hours. *Any exceptions are at the discretion of the Center’s management.

A student’s 25% down payment will be refunded only when:• The Center cancels the class, for the entire session, prior

to its scheduled start. • The registered student notifies the Center of a drop or

transfer from the class at least 4 days (96 hours) before class is scheduled to begin.

• The student has made special arrangements with the Center to audit a class or classes.

Class fees will not be pro-rated or refunded in case of student absence(s). If extended absence is required, due to medical or other documented reasons, the Center may adjust or credit class fees on an individual basis. These arrangements are not guaranteed, and will be made at the discretion of the Center’s management.Cancellation of a single class, due to weather, instructor emergency, etc. may result in any of the following, at the discretion of the Center’s management:

• Scheduling of a make-up class• Pro-ration of the class fee• Issuing of credit, to be used toward other/future classes

What is 171?171 Cedar Arts Center is a dynamic organization that enriches the community by offering excellent arts instruction, exhibiting today’s artists and presenting live performances.

Where is 171 located? We operate out of two historic buildings in Corning, New York. Located between First and Second Streets, the Bruce House is to the south, at 171 Cedar Street, and the Drake House is to the north, at 155 Cedar Street.

Where can I park?Parking is limited to on-street availability during regular business hours. Please observe the alternate street parking regulations in the neighborhood. We ask that you do not park in the TobeyCo lot between our two buildings.

What should I do while my child is in class?Please walk young students to the door and pick them up inside the building. While young children are attending classes, 171 suggests that a parent or designated responsible adult be available to ensure their care and safety outside of 171’s classrooms.

How will I know if a class has been canceled?If a class has been canceled due to under-enrollment, we will contact you 1 to 2 days in advance of the class start date.

In cases of inclement weather, 171 Cedar Arts Center makes closing decisions independently of local school districts, and posts closings on its website, Facebook page, and newsletter. If you are concerned that your class may be canceled, call the Center directly, see our website, www.171CedarArts.org, or tune into local television news channels.

Do you offer custom classes? Can I plan an event at 171?Yes! We offer corporate team-building workshops, birthday parties, private rentals, scout badge workshops and more. CERAMICSCeramics classes at 171 balance group instruction with demonstrations and individualized attention. 171’s Woodcock Ceramic Studio is equipped with ten pottery wheels, a slab roller, extruder, pug mill, glazing area and three electric kilns. Located in 171’s Bruce House, the Woodcock Ceramic Studio’s class fees include use of all ceramic tools, glazes, clay and firings needed for completion of in-class projects. Adult students may use up to 10 hours of out-of-class time to finish projects started in class. Students may purchase additional clay and studio time through 171.

Non-instructed work time in 171’s ceramic studio is available to adult members of 171 (ages 18+) through Open Studio rental. For $100 per month, students can process, glaze, and fire up to two bags of clay on site. Clay must be purchased separately; glazes, tool-use and firing are included in the fee. Completion of a minimum of one 171 ceramics course, or demonstrated ability and current 171 membership, is required for eligibility. The studio is available during non-class, business hours (typically 35 to 40 hours per week). A calendar showing up-to-date studio availability is posted in the ceramic studio. Story time plus play time equals clay time in this fun class for budding sculptors. Storybook stars – and their surroundings – inspire students as they make a satisfying collection of sculptural and functional ceramic keepsakes. Each week, instructor Angela Niforatos reads a book and introduces a new, related project, teaching an array of basic hand-building techniques in the process.

‘Mud’ making leads to art in this class for first and second graders. By getting their hands dirty, young sculptors will experiment with some of the many methods potters use to pinch, roll, shape and decorate clay objects. Some projects will be sculptural, others functional; all will be fun!

Children will have fun with Lynne Wagner as they throw some clay on the potter’s wheel and learn to center, shape, trim and glaze basic forms. Learn to center, shape, and trim basic forms into one-of-a-kind pieces on the potter’s wheel, then give them color and texture with glazes and finishing techniques. Novice and continuing students alike are welcome in this class, which includes plenty of individualized instruction from Lynne Wagner. *Students who desire an earlier departure time may begin working at 6:00 PM.

Surface Decoration: An Exploration of Materials and Technique for Tile, Pottery or Ceramic Sculpture (7 weeks)with Colleen Carey McCall Ages: Adult (17+)M $181 / NM $217 Fridays, 12:00 - 2:30 PM

Students learn Colleen’s holistic approach to designing pieces that are as functional as they are decorative. By carefully considering every detail students will learn how to create a form or tile installation with a plan to integrate surface decoration in order to produce a cohesive whole. Potters and sculptors with basic to advanced skills will enjoy Colleen’s demonstrations for creating a range of forms, tips for working with press molds, applying texture, transferring patterns and incorporating color and line using a vast array of under glazes and slips. Majolica and ceramic decals will also be explored.

The addition of paper pulp or cotton linter to raw clay greatly enhances the capability and workability of the material for large-scale sculpture. The added fiber provides strength while building then burns away during the firing process to create a lighter piece. Students will also experiment with room-temperature glazing techniques. Some clay experience required; students are invited to select their own subject matter.

Spring May 2 - June 13

Students will explore solid sculpting using an armature and lots of clay, followed by detailed hollowing and reconstruction. Great for a garden/outdoor piece, this technique will be used to produce a small, introductory piece followed by a larger project. Think mushroom then gnome, or mouse then elephant! Also a great technique for creating a portrait bust, sculpting with mass is one more skill for curious and advancing potters (and artists of all kinds) to have at their disposal.

Ocean Going Vessels: Dimensional Surface Decoration Techniques (7 weeks)with Angela Niforatos Ages: Teen/AdultM $108 / NM $130 Fridays, 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Angela Niforatos’s intricate, sea-life inspired ceramic vessels are covered by everything from hundreds of raised dots to elaborate barnacles and corals. In this fun class on surface decoration, she shares her own methods for making and attaching dimensional elements to functional vessels, and encourages students to explore their own passions through surface sculpture. She also will discuss how to meld form with surface to create cohesive pieces that successfully convey an aesthetic idea.

Mosaic Techniques and Applications (4 weeks) with Amanda Warren Ages: Adult M $120 / NM $144 Tuesdays, 5:30 - 8:30 PM

From sketching a design and gathering/prepping materials to layout, gluing and grouting, this class introduces all of the tools and techniques necessary to begin working with this versatile medium. Amanda covers all of the basics, and offers ideas for developing dynamic compositions and exploring non-routine applications. All materials and tools will be provided, but students are welcome to bring and include their own ceramic and glass.

• For students who wish to advance through training in ballet, tap, modern, or jazz, we offer a graduated curriculum of school-year-long classes that run from September through May (see graduated class schedule at www.171CedarArts.org). Students may join the Graduated Dance program until mid-January, when classes begin preparing for the year-end dance recital.

• Short-term classes and workshops for students of all ages and experience levels are offered in a variety of disciplines, and at various times throughout the year.

Lyrical dancers interpret story and convey emotion through movement. In this introductory class, instructor Leanne Hull combines the technical elements of classical ballet with the fluidity and expressiveness of jazz, contemporary and modern dance movements to help students develop their musicality and enhance the expressiveness of their movements. With many years of teaching and performance experience, Ms. Hull helps students explore positive, age-appropriate themes, such as friendship and freedom.

This class with experienced dancer and theatrical performer Shayne Jones will use tap as a springboard for exploring rhythm, body and spatial awareness, movement, and musicality. By combining tap basics with diverse movements from the worlds of hip hop, modern, and ballet, this class encourages boys to explore the unique strength, power, and style male dancers can bring to the dance world. Classes will include technique

training, improvisation, and choreography of a final piece for the crew to perform. Tap shoes are required. *Optional recital performance on May 10.

This survey course dedicates one to two classes to a single weapon, giving a perspective on the evolution of swordplay from broadswords to the immediate ancestors of modern fencing weapons. The Women’s Chorale of 171 Cedar has been sharing its love of singing for more than 20 years. Created by and for women who love to sing and explore a wide range of music for treble voices, and who enjoy sharing that passion, the Chorale is always open to new members. Chorale auditions are largely informal, focusing on pitch, blend and willingness to strive for performance excellence.

The Chorale takes great pleasure in performing much-loved favorites from around the world, along with lesser-known and original compositions. Its mission is to share vocal music with the widest possible audience and to develop and promote the universal language of music.

In this one-day workshop, Ithaca photographer Andrew Gillis demonstrates and discusses basic digital editing techniques. Instructor Dustin Boutwell combines occasional demonstrations with ample individualized instruction to help each student achieve his or her goals. Dustin moves through the classroom to answer questions, help students problem solve and offer thoughtful critique. Whether you’re putting brush to canvas for the very first time or you need help completing your masterpiece, this

supportive and flexible class is ideal. Students choose and supply their own subject matter. New students should bring a variety of still life objects and/or photographs to the first class. *New students may attend a demo/set-up workshop with Dustin prior to joining the class. Artist and designer Marc Rubin shares his approach to painting from life. From surface preparation to brush work to lighting the subject, Marc shares the techniques he uses to compose and capture convincing paintings from life. Instructor provides still life subject matter, and student-grade supplies are available to students for use during class. A materials list for those wishing to purchase their own supplies is available, from instructor, upon request.

Introduction to Watercolor January 7 - 28

If you’ve wanted to try painting, enhance your technique or take your art on the road, watercolor is the perfect place to start. Instructor Bridget Bossart van Otterloo will introduce basic techniques and materials and will talk about color theory, color mixing, brush handling, and different types of watercolor paper. This class is flexible and ideal for students of all abilities and levels of experience.

Watercolor Landscapes February 4 - 25

In this class for students of all experience levels, students will learn to use color mixing and cloud and sky painting techniques to create a finished landscape from photographs. Students should bring at least one image to class.

Printmaker, painter and illustrator Nick Bontorno uses a variety of subjects to introduce transfer drawing – an engaging technique that turns a controlled drawing into an unpredictable and artistic monoprint. Beginning and advanced artists alike will enjoy using ink, brayers, paper and pencil to create one-of-a-kind still life, figure, and/or landscape prints. Learn basic techniques and add additional interest to drawings by blocking in additional color or embellishing in other creative ways.
