Why Is Geography Vital To Modern Life?Practical Uses Of GIS

• GIS – Geographical Information System

• It involves vast sets of digital data with a geographical reference (location) so that the data can be mapped and then analysed to make decisions.

• 1 Look at the following practical uses of GIS and think about how life would be different without these.

• 2 Think about your future careers, where could GIS prove useful?

Data - Crime Records

• Use – Police and CID can map crime hot spots.• They can try to tackle crime in specific locations.• They can solve cases using this data.• Have you seen CSI, Law And Order etc?

Data – 999 call location

• Use - Combined with tracking devices on vehicles, road network information, vehicles can be deployed rapidly to emergencies. Sat Nav can also be used.

• Furthest away vehicle would be quicker!

• Traffic jams and road diversion

Data – relief map, weapon location, building sites etc

• Use - Modern games require maps to be made available – these use GIS technology to offer new challenges in games e.g. COD, minecraft. Can you think of any more?

Data – Ebola victim location, doctors and nurses locations, medical supplies,

lorries and plane locations.

• Use - All data mapped to see where disease has spread, target resources to where needed and put in place medical practice to combat disease. Same principle used for all logistics, haulage companies.

Data – relief map, location of rivers, location of housing, river data, climate

statistics and rainfall info

• Use - Town planners and councils can decide where to locate new building, where to place flood prevention measures, predict river floods, plan ahead for droughts.

Jobs And Your Future• How do each of these jobs use GIS? • Financial workers• Emergency services • Town planners, surveyors• Architects and builders• Journalists and Teachers• Buyers for business• Haulage companies/logistics• Supermarket managers• Solicitors and lawyers• Engineers • Software and computer designers

• Where could GIS be used in your future career?
