Principal’s Message

Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend parent/teacher conferences. We believe in a strong home/school connection at Washington and we greatly appreciate parent involvement.

Parental involvement enhances academic performance. The more intensely the parent is involved, the greater chance of academic success.

Parental involvement leads to better classroom behavior.

A parent’s interest/encouragement can affect a child’s attitude towards school, classroom conduct, self-esteem, and motivation.

WordplayUse these activities to build your child’s phonemic awareness – his ability to hear sounds in words:

1) Choose a three-letter word, such as cap. Have your youngster substitute different beginning sounds from the alphabet (lap, map, nap, rap, sap, tap, zap). How many can he think of that are actual words?

Pick a long word and tell him to clap once as he says each syllable. For mozzarella, he would clap four times: moz-za-rel-la.

Ask your child to say a word without the first sound. Example: “Can you say sit without the s?” (Answer: It).

Think of a word and give your youngster a “sound” clue to figure it out. For instance, “ I’m thinking of a word for something that you chew. The word has an uh sound in the middle”. (Answer: Gum).

These can be fun activities to do while traveling in the car, while tucking your child in

This year’s Hoops For Heart Event, which wrapped up mid-February, was the most successful one yet, by far! I am THRILLED to say that we not only met our school fundraising goal of $5,000 again this year, but we set a new record for the most money ever raised by a school in Tiffin City School District, crushing the record we set 2 years ago ($5,600), by raising just over $7,600.00! That’s 4 years in a row that Washington has raised at least $5,000 for the American Heart Association totaling over $23,000. All of that money will go a long way in saving lives and helping kids with special hearts. I could not be more proud of our amazing students and our awesome school!

It takes heart to be a hero, and Washington K-1 Elementary has a TON of heart!! WAY TO GO Heart Heroes!! Thank you to all those who participated and all those who pledged to this wonderful cause. I'd like to also say a

big thank you to parents and family members! The students could not have done it without your help! Washington K-1

Elementary should be very proud of our incredible achievement!

After 2 ½ weeks of fundraising, students attended the fun-filled Hoops For Heart Event the second week of February during their regularly scheduled P.E. classes, participating in fun basketball stations and an obstacle course. The event culminated with glow-in-the-dark shooting and dancing, with which the students had a blast! Rory McFiercely, the lion also made a special visit back to Washington to help us celebrate our amazing success!
