Dairybusiness2019 in Kyiv Ukraine
200 dairy experts from Ukraine (UA) and beyond
gathered in Kyiv at the #dairybusiness2019
Congress of Dairy Union Ukraine and Infagro.
EDA secretary general Alexander Anton discussed
the impact of the EU – UA Deep & Comprehensive
Free Trade Area that is in application since 2016
with Ukrainian minister Inna Meteleva and the
future EU – UA dairy relationship.
“The work of the European Commission services and
the Ukrainian administration to speed up the
process of alignment in terms of food safety and
food quality rules is highly appreciated. This
future alignment is for sure key for the further
development of the Ukrainian dairy sector.
Another one is the assurance of a competitive
milk basis. These ambitions are shared by
both partners”, concluded Alexander Anton. Ed

EU Commission highlights the role of roughage for feed protein
The European Commission published last week
the 2018-19 EU Protein Balance Sheet (PBS),
giving an overview of the supply and demand
situation for protein used for feed purposes in
the EU. As for the previous version, the paper
highlights the role of roughage as the main
source of feed protein and the EU’s complete
self-sufficiency in pasture, green forage and
silage for feed.
EDA has contributed to the PBS with the joint
EDA-IFCN study on the protein input to dairy
cows via roughage, showing that 70% of the
protein to dairy cows in the EU stems from this
type of fodder, representing a key factor when it
comes to the environmental and economic
sustainability of the European dairy sector.
European Dairy Association
For dairy, 70% of the total protein intake
of dairy cows stems from roughage of
which more than 95% are grown 'on farm':
a key factor when it comes to economic
and environmental #sustainability

Next EU Commission 2019 – 2024: boarding completed!
The new European Commission, spearheaded by
President-elect Ursula Von der Leyen, seems to
be on track to take office on 1st December. This
week’s approval of Oliver Varhelyi (Hungary) ’s
application as new European Commissioner for
European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement
Negotiations paved the way. The European
Parliament is expected to give its final approval to
the 27 members in its upcoming plenary session in
Strasbourg. EDA looks forward to working with all
of them in their respective fields.
EDA just published ► a new factsheet
on the Dairy Product Environmental
Footprint (PEF), now defined as the
reference methodology assessing the
environmental footprint of dairy products
during their full life cycle, by the
successful vote of the European
Commission and Member States in
2018. It is a concrete example of the
proactive Dairy approach in terms of
environmental and climate action. The
project has now entered the transition
phase, aimed at assessing its future
policy applications.
