society. The club joined EcoWatch and Indian Railways for organizing eco awareness
campaign and cleanliness drive at Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station (City
Railway Station) on January 31, 2018.
Freedom and Cleanliness were the two cherished goals of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.
Out of these two goals, the “Freedom” was achieved on August 15, 1947 but still the other goal of
“Cleanliness” remained unfulfilled. Against this context, “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” was conceived
and was started as a mass movement by the Government of India on October 2, 2014 to sensitize people
about maintaining cleanliness not only in their residences but also in the surroundings. One of the
specific objectives of the initiative is to eradicate open defecation by October 2, 2019, the 150th
anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.
The main objective of the campaign was
to create awareness among the general
passengers, railway employees and other
stake-holders of the railway station about
waste management , maintaining
cleanliness and hygiene. The students
along with the staff of Indian Railways
took out a procession all across the railway station, including the platforms and surrounding areas
outside the station to create awareness on eco-system by chanting slogans of “Clean India, Our India”,
“Go Green, Get Clean”, and “Namma Bharata Swachh Bharata”. After the procession, students
actively participated in cleaning the platform, tracks inside the railway station and the area outside the
railway station.
