Today’s service is led by The Rev’d Mark Johnstone. The choir is directed by Andrew Forbes, and the organ is played by Andrew Forbes and Dr Malcolm Sim. This service is broadcast each week at www.glasgowcathedral.org and remains online afterwards. We would be delighted if you would mention the broadcast to friends on social media.

Dear Friends,

I hope this intimation finds you well.

As we prepare for opening the Cathedral and our return to worship, we have been working with Historic Environment Scotland (HES). This is an important and significant partnership. Many of the necessary requirements including signage, hand sanitiser, tracking and tracing, face coverings and appropriate spacing we have agreed together. We are aware HES have taken considerable responsibility to ensure their requirements complement and support those required by the Church of Scotland. The preparation has taken longer than anticipated and we are aware this is a tentative opening with necessary restrictions. A primary concern is the inclusion of those who do not have online access to the Web or an email facility. Please try to contact those you know who are disadvantaged by our use of technology and their lack of access. I plan to lead an act of worship on a Wednesday morning at 11am. I plan to begin this on Wednesday 2nd September. This may not be suitable for those with commitments and responsibilities on a weekday. It is my hope to return to Sunday worship in October. The Kirk Session will advise as we go forward. Those who are adherents, members or who have regularly worshipped within the Cathedral will be welcome to attend the Wednesday service. Those attending the Wednesday service will be asked to book a space. You can book a space for those unable to do so themselves. I will share the weblink and method as soon as it is available. The 11am time slot will not be available for visitors or tourists. Congregational members will be required to wear a face covering and there will be no congregational singing. Please remember numbers will be limited (Approx. 30 people). This approach to worship is not ideal but in the current situation it is what we will be able to do. Kindest regards Mark Johnstone. (Minister)

ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Master Tallis’s Testament – H Howells INTROIT: If ye love me – T Tallis WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN: CH3 445

1. Make me a captive, Lord, And then I shall be free;

Force me to render up my sword, And I shall conqueror be. I sink in life’s alarms When by myself I stand;

Imprison me within thine arms, And strong shall be my hand.

2. My heart is weak and poor Until it master find;

It has no spring of action sure -

It varies with the wind. It cannot freely move

Till thou hast wrought its chain;

Enslave it with thy matchless love, And deathless it shall reign.

3. My power is faint and low

Till I have learned to serve;

It wants the needed fire to glow, It wants the breeze to nerve;

It cannot drive the world, Until itself be driven;

Its flag can only be unfurled

When thou shalt breathe from heaven.

4. My will is not my own

Till thou hast made it thine;

If it would reach a monarch’s throne, It must its crown resign. It only stands unbent, Amid the clashing strife, When on thy bosom it has leant, And found in thee its life.

CALL TO PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING: ISAIAH 56: 1, 6-8

PSALM: 67

SECOND READING: Matthew 15:10-20 THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN: CH3 68 1. Thou art before me, Lord, thou art behind

And thou above me hast spread out thy hand; Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, Too high to grasp, too great to understand.

2. Then whither from thy Spirit shall I go, And whither from thy presence shall I flee?

If I ascend to heaven thou art there, And in the lowest depths I meet with thee

3. If I should take my flight into the dawn, If I should dwell on ocean’s farthest shore Thy mighty hand would rest upon me still And thy right hand would guard me evermore.

4. If I should say ‘Darkness will cover me,

And I shall hide within the veil of night’, Surely the darkness is not dark to thee, The night is as the day, the darkness light.

5. Search me, O God, search me and know my heart, Try me, O God, my mind and spirit try; Keep me from any path that gives thee pain, And lead me in the everlasting way.

ANTHEM: Holy is the true light – W H Harris PRAYER OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN HYMN: CH3 450 1. Saviour, teach me, day by day, Love's sweet lesson to obey; Sweeter lesson cannot be, Loving him who first loved me. 2. With a child's glad heart of love At thy bidding may I move,

Prompt to serve and follow thee, Loving him who first loved me.

3. Teach me thus thy steps to trace, Strong to follow in thy grace, Learning how to love from thee, Loving him who first loved me. 4. Love in loving finds employ, In obedience all her joy; Ever new that joy will be, Loving him who first love

5. Thus may I rejoice to show That I feel the love I owe;

Singing, till thy face I see, Of his love who first loved me.

2. Be thou my Wisdom, thou my true Word; I ever with thee, thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

3. Be thou my battle-shield, sword for the Fight; Be thou my dignity, thou my delight, Thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tower

Raise thou me heaven-ward, O Power of my power.

4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty Praise; Thou mine inheritance, now and always: Thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art.
