AAuussttrraalliiaa DDaayy AAwwaarrddss>>> from page 1Dot is a wonderful advo-

cate for the Guyra Commu-nity, she is always the first toput up her hand to lend as-sistance when needed, withno task too menial for her tocontribute her time and as-sistance.

During her time on GuyraShire Council, she workedabove and beyond to see anew aged care facility built intown and remains totallydedicated to seeing it open itsdoors.

In the lead up to the Armi-dale Regional Council elec-tion she acted as a guide andmentor to candidates, pass-ing on her knowledge of thelocal area and local issues

Despite this record of in-volvement Dot remains hum-ble and admits to beingsurprised at her award.

“I wasn’t expecting this andnever thought that I wouldbe nominated, let alone win,”she said.

“Even when I received theinvitation, I expected thatthe award was for the Trout-Fest which I was involvedwith.”

“When it was announced Iwas blown away. I have al-ways been involved in things- that’s just what you do.”

FFOOOOTTNNOOTTEE:: Not only wasDot named Citiizen of theYear - she also helped to setup and decorate the tablesprior to the awards and thencleaned up after the presen-tations - a truly worthy re-cipient of the Citizen of theYear Award.

Australia Day ambassadorSteve Widders was the specialguest at Australia Day cele-brations around the Guyradistrict.

His visit included present-ing awards at the AustraliaDay Awards dinner, breakfastin Ben Lomond, flagraising inGuyra and Tingha celebra-tions.

At each of these events hespoke on the importance ofthe Australia Day celebra-tions. He congratulated allthose who received awards, thanking them for the contri-bution to the livelihood andwellbeing of the community.

“Today we are like manyother communities acrossAustralia that are celebratingtheir local identities, theirlocal citizens their local proj-ects and the fact that they areAustralians.”

“As an ambassador I takegreat pride in being Aus-

tralian, I take even greaterpride in being an Aboriginalperson and I take a lot ofpride in being part of a com-munity of Australians thathave their own identity.”

“We are very fortunate toenjoy everything that wehave here and we must nottake our standard of living forgranted.”

“What are we celebratingon Australia Day? Is it thefreedom and the high stan-dard of living? Is it flexibilityand the fact there are no warshere? Is it the freedom ofspeech that we have to offeropinions?

“We really must not takeour status in Australia forgranted. As Australians weall come together help our fel-low Australians and we mustcontinue to do that if we aregoing to survive as a country.Today we celebrate what wehave and make it stronger.”

Kolora still waiting for ‘finishing touches’Armidale Regional Council

has moved to allay concernssurrounding Guyra’s new agedcare facility.

Building works were completed late last year andresidents were given a move indate of November 24th, whichwas then pushed back to December 2nd.

The move did not eventuateand residents and their families have had little or nocommunication since.

On Tuesday afternoon ARCissued a press release sayingthat the finishing touches arebeing completed and Councilis planning a smooth transi-tion for the service’s residents.

Council says that communi-cation services will be installedin coming weeks, in prepara-tion for an official opening ofthe 32-bed facility in the firsthalf of 2018.

The new $7.5 million facilityis located next to the Guyrahospital building, replacing

Kolora Aged Care’s existing 22-bed complex and providingresidents with more modernfacilities and easier access tohealth services.

“We had been looking at anearlier transition to the newbuilding but the comfort andcare of the residents is our pri-mary concern,” Council’s Serv-ice Leader Community andCustomer Service, KristaSchmidt, said.

“Accreditation renewals forKolora’s services are due nextmonth and we want to have allof that in place, as well as afully completed new building, before implementing a de-tailed plan to move into thenew facility with as little inter-ruption and inconvenience tothe residents as possible.

“Since late last year we havebeen liaising with residentsand their families to prepare

for the move. In addition, thereare a number of communitygroups keen to assist with themove.”

Visit Council’s website forupdates on the project, whichis being assisted by a $1.5 mil-lion grant from the NSW De-partment of Health andAgeing and $500,000 in Fed-eral Government fundingthrough the Member for NewEngland, Barnaby Joyce.

There is still no official date for the move into the new buildings

January 24th - There was anincrease in lamb supplies anda marked improvement in thecondition and weights withnew season lambs making upthe bulk of the offering. Withthe deteriorating seasonalconditions producers were stillprepared to offload lightweight store lambs. The largerlines of Merino lambs of re-cent times were not available. The usual buyers were in at-tendance.

The improved quality and in-creased supply contributed toa dearer trend for both thetrade weights and the heavylambs. Average prices im-proved by as much as$12/head with weight and

quality major contributors.Well finished trade weightlambs were also dearer, al-though the improvement wasnot as great. The dry condi-tions being experienced acrossmost of the state saw demandfor restocker lambs weaker, re-sulting in cheaper trendsthroughout of $6 to $7/head.Quality was a factor in somelarger price change.

There was a large variationthe weight and conditionthrough the sheep with heavycrossbred ewes well supplied.Market trends were cheaper asa result of weaker demand. The well finished sheep at-tracted the strongest competi-tion.

What a fantastic week it was at theLamb and Potato Festival! Congratula-tions to Steve Mepham and his commit-tee. The town was so alive, especiallySaturday with 1000’s of people, andthere was a very special vibe where everyou went.

The Guyra and District Chamber ofCommerce has extended their thanks toSteve Mepham and the Lamb andPotato Festival Committee for the op-portunity to have a site at the Festival.

President Aileen MacDonald said thatshe believes it was a fantastic opportu-nity to ‘sell’ our cool climate lifestyle.

“There was a constant stream of peo-ple and many brochures were handedout and the range of questions an-swered was varied and enlightening,”Aileen said.

“The Chamber kept a record of wherepeople came from and their interests. Itwas amazing how many people trav-elled really long distances especially toattend the festival, not to mention thosefrom around the New England who tookthe opportunity for a day out in Guyra.”

The bus tour run by the Chamberwas a huge success and included twotag-along cars to cater for last minute

bookings. The Chamber thanks thebusinesses that put time into entertain-ing the participants including Fionaand Derek Smith (Working with Na-ture), John Mitchell (potato grower ex-traordinaire), Costa Tomatoes and DeanWilliams (Springwater Smoked Trout).

A special thanks to David Bearup as

the talented and highly entertainingguide, Alan Wilkinson the driver whoadded his special touch to entertain-ment, and Armidale Regional Councilfor the use of the bus.  Guyra DistrictChamber of Commerce Inc. was thrilledto have this opportunity to promoteGuyra.

January 25th - The bench-mark Eastern Market Indicatorat down 57 cents this weekmakes for some sombre readingbut there were some selectedpockets of resistance to thefalls. A limited selecon of Su-perfine types along with the 22micron indicator all gainedground whilst the 21 micron in-dicator held firm. Most of thedownward pressure on theMerino Fleece side of the equa-on rested between the 18 to20 micron types. Crossbredtypes had a parcularly hardme of things as did the MerinoCarding Indicator, dropping 12%for the week. Like last weekwool displaying imperfeconssuch as high mid breaks or car-rying a high percentage of veg-

etable maer were heavily dis-counted. 36,430 bales were soldnaonally for the week and at14.3% the passed in rate wasmore than double the season’saverage to date. Most of thispassed in wool was eitherCrossbred or Oddments with upto a quarter of the offering ofthese types failing to sell. Thefall over the last two weeks hasle the market at levels nearthe pre Christmas close. It’s im-portant to remember many mi-cron indicators remain at nearrecord levels with Merino typesshowing a 25% jump on lastyear’s prices.

We all should congratulatethe organisers of this year’smost successful Lamb andPotato Festival that is nowwinding up. We had a goodselection of stalls, great lambpies and dinners, top music, exciting rides on the “GuyraExpress Train”, model railexhibitions, Holy Smoke’sFire Works, camel rides[that’s a first] military vehi-cle displays, the art exhibi-tion, the museum being openand the show and shine vehi-cle display with over 180 ve-hicles. There were also manymore others too numerous tomention.

On Saturday, Guyra was

an absolute buzz with all theactivities abounding with in-fectious excitement. Theshops were busy, people wereeverywhere, the RV campingspot was chockers with vansand it occurred to me andothers that we need to keepthis level of activity going.

Imagine if we had the railtrail also operational and allthe extra tourists that thiswould bring would be addedto the already significantnumbers coming to Guyra forthis event and also through-out the year. This level of ex-citement is what is needed tomake Guyra a destinationnot a spot on a map to passby. Our accommodationproviders, food and coffeeshops, and the multitude ofother support businesses in-

cluding service stations andpubs etc would greatly bene-fit from this increased expo-sure of Guyra along with alift in employment opportu-nities.

Together, let us residents ofGuyra all call upon theGuyra Business Chamber ofCommerce and the ArmidaleRegional Council to now ac-tively push hard for the com-mencement of the Rail Trail. These trails are successfulall throughout Australia andGuyra can greatly benefit.Let’s not be distracted bynegativity. We all need towork towards making GuyraGreat and putting it well andtruly on the map. There is notime to lose.
