Dr. Larry Frank, PhD, AICP, CIP, ASLA
Dr. Frank is the Bombardier Chairholder in Sustainable Transportaon at the University of Brish Columbia and a Senior
Non-resident Fellow of the Brookings Instuon. He specializes in the interacon between land use, travel behaviour, air
quality, and health. He has been studying the effects of neighbourhood walkability on travel paerns and sustainability for
over 15 years. He has lead or co-authored dozens of papers and two Island Press books, Health and Community Design - The
Impacts of The Built Environment on Physical Acvity, and Urban Sprawl and Public Health, on these topics. In June of 2004, his
study Obesity Relaonships with Community Design, Physical Acvity, and Time Spent in Cars was released documenng for
the first me relaonships between travel habits, neighbourhood design characteriscs, and the odds of being obese. He and
his colleagues have also been conducng detailed assessments of fuel consumpon and climate change impacts of urban formpolicies. Over the past decade Dr. Frank has been working directly with local governments to help translate results from
research into pracce based tools (e.g. I-PLACE3S developed by the Sacramento Council of Governments) that can provide
direct feedback on the health and environmental impacts of alternave transportaon and land development proposals.
Ken Greenberg, FRAIC, TSA, AIA Associate Member, IFUD Fellow, Urban Design Forum Member
Ken Greenberg is an architect and urban designer, living in Toronto. For over three decades he has played a pivotal role on
public and private assignments in urban sengs throughout North America and Europe, focusing on the rejuvenaon of
downtowns, waterfronts, neighbourhoods and university campuses from the scale of the city region to that of the city block.
Cies as diverse as Toronto, Harord, Amsterdam, New York, Boston, Montral, Washington, DC, Paris, Detroit, Saint Paul and
San Juan, Puerto Rico, have benefited from his advocacy and passion for restoring the vitality, relevance and sustainability of
the public realm in urban life. A former Director of Urban Design and Architecture for the City of Toronto and Principal ofGreenberg Consultants, he is the recipient of the 2010 American Instute of Architects Thomas Jefferson Award for public
design excellence.
Dr. Jason Gilliland, BA (Hon), MA, MArch, PhD
Dr. Jason Gilliland is Director of the Urban Development Program, Associate Professor of Geography, and Associate Professor of
Health Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. He is also a Scienst with both the Children's Health Research Instute
and the Lawson Health Research Instute based in London, Ontario. He is a regular consultant for municipal and provincial
departments of planning, transportaon, housing, childrens services, food & agriculture, and public health, as well as an acve
volunteer, currently serving on nearly two dozen boards and commiees of non-profit organizaons across Canada, many in
London-Middlesex. In 2010, he was awarded an Angel Award by the Old East Village (BIA) for his ongoing volunteer efforts in
the revitalizaon of that community. He holds a BA from McMaster University, as well as a Master of Arts, Master of
Architecture, and Doctorate in Geography from McGill University. Dr Gilliland is internaonally-recognized for his research on
urban development and public health issues, and in 2009, he was recognized with an award from the Canadian Associaon of
Geographers for Outstanding Achievement by an Early Career Scholar for his contribuon to research on children in the city.
