Malaysia - Overview

Malaysia

Malaysia offers a tremendous range of golf courses to suit all standards and tastes. Many of them have been designed by the most famous names in golf and have hosted major golfing events attended by many of the top players. There are more than 200 courses with many different layouts and the course architects have used the natural terrain of mountains, beach and rainforest to make the best of the local environment within their unique designs. What makes playing golf in Malaysia even more magical is the magnificent scenery and wonderful flora and fauna you will encounter as you make your way round the course.

If you are looking for beaches combined with golf then head off to Penang or Langkawi and relax on their white sandy beaches between rounds. Perhaps you prefer the city life - Kuala Lumpur is an ideal base from which to explore and is within easy reach of many of the country’s best courses.

Johor in the south which is also easily accessible from Singapore is another golfing mecca and boasts more than 30 courses. A two hour flight from Kuala Lumpur across the South China Sea is the East Malaysian state of Sabah which has excellent golf courses and many other attractions, as does nearby Sarawak.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur – or KL as it is more commonly known has become the symbol of Malaysia in the 21st

century and what was once a tin-mining frontier town has become a gleaming metropolis, dominated by the some of the tallest skyscrapers in Southeast Asia with the outward trappings of its new found wealth seen everywhere. Despite its new found prosperity KL remains an essentially Asian city with historic temples and mosques, traditional shopping malls and busy hawker stalls serving food from all over Asia. The remarkable cultural diversity is very evident and the original Malays, Chinese businessmen and the migrants from India, not forgetting the British, have all left their mark. The food, nightlife and of course the shops are the highlight of any visit but there are numerous other sights to enjoy.

KL has a rich golfing heritage. One of Malaysia's most famous courses is the Royal Selangor Golf Club which was established in 1893 and has also been the venue for many international tournaments. Others include the internationally recognized Saujana Golf & Country Club, the easily accessible Bukit Jalil Golf Course and Kelab Golf Sentul Raya which is another course with a rich history dating from 1928. Others not to be missed include Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, home to the Volvo Masters, Bukit Unggul Country Club and the two courses at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

In Kuala Lumpur, you should allow at least an hour and a half to get to your chosen course although most courses take 30-60 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions when you leave your hotel.

Glenmarie Golf & Country Club - One of the top clubs in Malaysia which has undergone a program of continuous improvement since it was opened in 1993. The club has 36 holes and the aptly named Garden Course wanders through a tropical landscape of lakes, trees and flowering shrubs alive with the sounds of the numerous birds. The Valley Course has pine trees lining the narrow fairways and the views from parts of the course are breathtaking as it winds its way across the hills and valleys. The Garden Course is floodlit so night golf is possible.

Kuala Lumpur Golf Courses

Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club - One of the best courses in Malaysia in a prime location close to the city centre. The newly completed West Course has received rave reviews both for the quality of the course but also for the beauty of the landscaping and is likely to attract some major tournaments soon.. The floodlit East Course is more forgiving but accuracy and patience are required to score well. There are some tough holes on both courses and the greens are generally excellent with some hidden slopes and subtle borrows.

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort- A 27-hole championship layout which will suit golfers of all standards. The 9-hole West Course has some interesting water hazards and these combined with the strategically placed sand traps and the many dog legs make this an interesting challenge. The East Course is more challenging and is built on the site of a former rubber plantation. Both courses wander through the undulating terrain and are wonderfully shaped and delightfully landscaped. Both courses drain very well and are playable very quickly after rain.

Page 13: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf

Templar Park Country Club- Ideally located only 15 minutes from the city, this Jumbo Ozaki designed course is surrounded by virgin jungle and the whole course is dominated by the imposing limestone hill called Bukit Takun. The course is very scenic and made quite challenging by the many water hazards, some of which require long carries to reach the fairway or green. The 18th in particular will set your mind racing with water, out-of-bounds large mounds and the many bunkers there to trap you.

Kuala Lumpur Golf Courses

Royal Selangor Golf Club– The “Old Lady” of golf in Malaysia located in the heart of the city with the old course dating back to 1893. The club offers two 18 hole layouts as well as a short 9 hole course. The “New’ course, even though it is quite flat, is still quite challenging because the fairways are made very narrow by the trees which line them and by the well placed bunkers . As you start your round you will see the unmistakable shape of Petronas Towers in the background.

Saujana Golf & Country Club– Generally recognized as the best course in Malaysia and the home to the Malaysian Open this Robert Fream designed Palm Course with its narrow sloping fairways, numerous hazards and multi-level greens will test most golfers. The course starts amidst the tropical jungle but the back nine brings the city into view. The Bunga Raya course is much easier but has a sting in the tail as the last three holes are very challenging. Excellent clubhouse facilities as you would expect from this world class venue.

Page 14: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf
Page 15: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf

Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah - This was the world’s first 27-hole floodlit

course designed by Peter Thompson who built the course using the terrain's

natural undulations and lakes and planted more than 3000 trees in the process. He

also included his usual pot-bunkers, undulating fairways and elevated greens. The

course is ideal for golfers of all standards.. The 27-hole layout consists of three

different nines called President, Sultan and Alam Shah.

Kuala Lumpur Golf Courses

Staffield Golf Club– This 27 hole course is some way out of town only 10 miles

from the airport so an ideal place to play before jetting off to your next destination.

This is a very pretty course designed by Rodney Marsh who has left his mark on the

course with more than 80 strategically placed bunkers, dangerous water hazards

and undulating fairways which makes this a tough test. The signature hole is the

ninth on the West course, a par four dogleg requiring a tee shot between two lakes,

with the English style clubhouse providing a backdrop as you play up to the green.

Kota Permai Golf & Country Club– Set within the township of Kota Kemuning 26 km

southwest of KL this stunning 18-hole championship course designed by Australian

architect, Ross Watson is one of the most scenic in Malaysia. Water hazards run

alongside many of the holes so driving accuracy is essential and the greens are

protected by some deep bunkers. Memorable holes include the par four second hole

which won the Most Beautiful Hole in Malaysia. Much less water on the back nine and

the finishing hole, a par five, offers great views from the elevated tee box.

Penang

Much has changed since the days of the British-based East India Company who set up in Penang to take a slice of the spice trade and for a while it thrived and attracted entrepreneurs from all over the east. Today it has become the high tech capital of the world with many international companies setting up manufacturing centers here. Georgetown retains much of its original charm with its maze of narrow streets, dilapidated shop houses and human powered trishaws and although some high rise buildings are evident many of the traditional trades survive as they have done for the last 100 years. If you want the beach then head for Batu Ferringhi which although not as pristine as some other beaches in Malaysia is a great place to relax and chill out and many international hotels are located here.

Penang is a great place for a few days of relaxation and a round of golf and with easy access to other regional destinations can be combined with other destinations like Thailand or Singapore. Only 4 courses on the island but all of a good standard.

Penang Golf Courses

Bukit Jambul Country Club - A very attractive and enjoyable 18 holes layout designed by Robert Trent Jones II very close to Equatorial Hotel and although parts of the course is overlooked by apartment blocks there is enough vegetation around. The course is pretty tight and accurate shot making is essential particularly as the greens are quite small and are protected by some disguised bunkers which can blend into the background. The 10th is particularly memorable with an elevated tee and the fairway at least 100 feet below you.

Bukit Jawi Golf Resort - Bukit Jawi features two very well designed and challenging championship layouts. The Hill course is more forgiving with wide fairways although several tee shots are blind and the well placed bunkers or trees that line most fairways can catch you out. Water hazards cross some of the hotels and there are severe slopes on some of the greens. The Lake course is much tighter with plenty of elevation changes and water coming into play on many of the holes. Many great holes but the par-3 island green 15th is the highlight.

Penang Golf Resort - A 72-hole complex designed by Graham Marsh about 21 kms from Penang. The East and West courses are very similar although the East is very slightly longer. A pretty flat layout with not too many trees or water hazards although the course has been contoured and this together with the bunkers makes it more interesting. The fairways are quite wide and the rough quite light so tee to green it’s not too challenging but it still requires a good short game and accuracy around the greens to score well.

Langkawi

Langkawi

Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 tropical islands steeped in legend and folklore just off the west coast of Malaysia although only the main island has any real settlement on it. Most of the island is fringed with white-sand beaches and the interior is a mixture of jungle-clad hillsides teeming with exotic plant and animal life and cultivated paddy-fields.

Surprisingly there are three courses on this beautiful island and they all have unique characteristics. The first golf club to be built was the Langkawi Golf Club with 18-holes alongside the beach. Datai Bay is built right in the middle of a tropical rainforest and Gunung Raya Golf Resort is near Raya Mountain.

Langkawi Golf Courses

The Golf Club Datai Bay– Playing golf here is one of the most unique golfing experiences in Asia and at times it feels like you are playing in a nature reserve rather than a golf course. Built in the Gunung Mat Chin-Chang forest reserve the 5994 meter Par 72 is surrounded virgin jungle teeming with animal and bird life. The course is not easy and the tricky uphill and downhill lies, undulating fairways, fast greens and the jungle - all combine to provide the ultimate golf experience. The Golf Club Datai Bay was voted as The Most Scenic Golf Course in Malaysia.

Gunung Raya Golf Resort– This Max Wexler designed course is spread over 300 acres of what was once a rubber plantation in the foothills of Gunung Raya with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. There are many bumps and mounds on the fairways and trees line most of the fairways with water coming into play on all but three of the holes and the greens are protected by well-placed bunkers. The par 4 13th is particularly tough hole with OB all the way down the right and the hazard creeping into the fairway on the left.

Johor

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru, or JB as it is more commonly referred to, is the southern gateway to Peninsular Malaysia and is connected to Singapore by an aging causeway and what is known as the Second Link which is much faster and less congested making the border crossing relatively hassle free. At the weekends and other holiday periods, many Singaporeans cross into Malaysia to visit the many shopping areas and local food establishments.

Many Singaporean golfers also flock across the border as there are more than 30 courses within one hour of downtown Singapore and they are much cheaper and less crowded than those in Singapore.

Mercure Palm Resort & Golf

Pulai Springs Resort

Page 38: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf

Pulai Springs Country Club- Offers two 18 hole championship courses and the Robert Trent Jones designed Pulai Course is a real test of golf. There are plenty of challenges on the front nine including the dramatic downhill Ninth hole with water protecting the green requiring a very accurate approach. The slightly shorter Melana Course, designed by Peter Scott has been built over rolling terrain and you need to be accurate off the tee and the greens have some deceptive borrows. Plenty of water hazards make this a tricky course.

The Legends Golf Resort- The original idea was to build three signature courses named after Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, however only the Nicklaus course plus nine holes of the Palmer course are open. The course is very well maintained and the greens fast and true with some memorable holes –particularly the par five 6th played from an elevated tee with a real chance to go for the green in two. Plenty of water on the way home and the tropical plants make this a very enjoyable course to play.

Palm Resort Golf & Country Club– Offers 54 holes of golf. Considered the “Resort Course”, Allamanda features remarkable landscaping amidst breathtaking scenery, with 11 holes of water and two Signature Holes No. 2 and No. 15. Cempaka has number of severe doglegs, combined with narrow shaped fairways, 9 holes of water and more than 60 bunkers making it a real challenge. Melati is a more open course but is the longest of the three courses and also boasts one of the largest bunkers and the longest holes at nearly 700 yards.

Johor Golf Courses

Page 39: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf

Johor Golf Courses

Desaru Golf & Country Club- Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr he has used the

natural terrain in his design. The front nine winds its way through tropical jungle and

the back nine goes alongside the beach. The fairways on the front nine are

reasonably generous although the jungle does encroach on a number of the holes.

The back nine which has several holes that go down to the sea has many blind tee

shots and doglegs.

Austin Hills Country Club- The course has been designed to provide both the club golfer and the professionals with a challenge. The 27 holes have been designed around the natural landscape to make it feel lie the course has been there

forever. The Austin course features tropical flowering plants giving it a distinctly

garden feeling. The Hills Course is designed with a desert theme, and is dotted

with cactus and large bunkers. The Resort Nine is the most challenging among the

three Nines.

Tanjung Puteri Golf & Country Club– offers an excellent challenge for amateurs

and professionals alike. Three championship golf courses have been constructed

amongst the are carved from the rolling terrain of oil palm plantations. Designed by

Max Wexler and Mamiya San, they have tried wherever possible to preserve the

natural environment. The carefully landscaped and manicured courses blend with

natural forests, mangroves and waterways and promises golfers a dramatic and

challenging game.

Golf Tips

Dress Code: Courses in Asia are not usually overzealous about clothing but to be safe wear shirts with collars and ensure you have the proper footwear with rubber spikes.

Dehydration: In warm or humid conditions you may need to drink more than usual to continue to ensure your body functions properly. It is advisable to drink some water before you start playing to ensure that your body is properly hydrated at all times. If you are feeling thirsty, that is a sure sign that your body has already lost too much liquid and you should take a drink immediately. All courses have regular drinks kiosks so please use them.

Sun Protection: Please ensure you use sufficient sun block to protect yourself against the very strong sun in Thailand. The best protection is to use your umbrella as a sunshade. It’s also possible to hire a second caddie to hold the umbrella.

Caddies: You will have to pay a caddie’s fee at all courses and it is expected to pay a tip in cash direct to the caddie. It’s entirely up to you but US$10-15 is usual practice depending on the service you receive. If you are really unhappy with the caddie please note the number and advise us.

Page 41: 160910 - Golf in Malaysia - by Diethelm Golf

Change of Clothes: All courses have well-equipped locker rooms so you can shower and change after your game so remember to take a change of clothes with you. Lockers are free of charge, but do not leave anything valuable inside – also it is customary to give a small tip to the attendant.

Golf Carts: Some courses are walking only and do not allow golf carts and at the courses that do permit them they may not be available during busy periods so please ensure that you request one in advance. Also it’s strictly one cart per person at most courses and depending on the weather you may have to stay on the cart path.

Non-Golfing Guests: If you want to bring a non-playing companion on the course please check with us first as not all courses allow this and they may also make a charge.

Equipment: You can hire clubs, shoes and umbrellas at most courses although the standards do vary and it may not always be the latest equipment.
