Discover a World of DifferenceLeicester College has worked closely with schools to meet the needs of learners aged 14 to 16 for over ten years. The wide variety of provision we deliver includes:

• Taster Workshops• Progression Days • Discovery Days• Level 1 and 2 qualifications• Future Pathways courses• GCSEs and Diplomas.

At Leicester College we believe that all learners can benefit from our renowned teaching and industry standard facilities. There are some learners at Key Stage 4 for whom, vocational/professional learning is particularly appropriate. They may, currently be unsure of which career to follow.

Discover Further Education has been developed to inspire and motivate these learners, introduce them to key areas of post 16 learning and give them the confidence to identify and pursue their chosen career.

Discover Further EducationDiscover Further Education is a practical 32 week programme for Year 10 and 11 learners. On this unique pathway, learners will experience eight different curriculum areas, with a view to discovering their career of choice going forward. Learners will spend four weeks in the following curriculum areas:

• Construction • Hair and Beauty • Hospitality, Leisure and Uniformed Public Services• Business and Computing/IT• Engineering• Caring Professions • Performing Arts • Creative Arts and Media

Learners may join Discover Further Education in September or join part way through the programme, subject to availability of places.

Added Value In Discover Further Education, English and maths is embedded throughout the eight core curriculum areas. Discover Further Education will also have a strong careers information and guidance element. Our inspirational teaching staff will use their industry experience to educate learners about careers in their specialist areas and further courses of study.

Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Discover Further Education has a strong STEM focus. Teaching and Learning will emphasise the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths aspects of all curriculum areas.

For example in Performing Arts, learners will have the chance to create and record music in our industry standard Apple Mac suites. In Hospitality,learners will explore modern food production techniques and manufacturing.

How will the rotation of courses be arranged?Three groups of 12 learners (groups A, B and C) will rotate through eight different curriculum areas, spending four weeks in each area. Grey indicates holidays or times when classes will not be taught.

What are the aims of this course?The aims of this course are to:• inspire, encourage and enthuse learners who are attracted to vocational courses post 16• introduce possible future careers and the skills needed to enter professions • inform learners of the entry requirements for further training and progression • introduce key skills, tools and equipment in a variety of trades and disciplines • promote and embed English and maths within the vocational context • challenge stereotypes • build confidence and self esteem, and raise aspiration• introduce learners to a further education environment, develop maturity and prepare for life

after school • uncover talent and develop ability.

What are the progression routes for learners who complete Discover Further Education? There are several different progression routes to achieve a level 1 or level 2 qualification after completion of Discover Further Education depending on the needs of the individual learner.

How can I ensure my learners receive good quality provision?Leicester College has been working successfully with year 10 and 11 learners for ten years and we are confident about the high quality of our provision. We request that you visit your learners in situ and keep in close contact with us throughout the process. Our Liaison Co-ordinator will be in regular contact with your designated link person in school, and will report any issues with behaviour and attendance as they occur. A formal, termly report will be written with key milestones achieved and targets for improvement.

How should I select the learners for this course? Discover Further Education is aimed at level 1 learners who would benefit from hands-on, practical experience, and who are likely to choose vocational/professional courses post 16. Each group on the course will consist of up to 12 learners.

When is the course? The course will begin on Friday 20 September 2013 from 9am to 3pm and will run for 32 weeks during term time. Learners will stay on College grounds throughout the day.

How are learners transported? Learners will make their own way to and from the college. Schools are expected to arrange and pay for travel where necessary.

How will learners be supported? Learners in mainstream schools who usually have learning support at school, are entitled to learning support while they are with an off-site provider. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure that this support is provided. A designated member of staff will support and mentor each group as they move through the carousel of courses.

How can I register learners for this course? Learners can apply through the College website www.leicestercollege.ac.uk Follow the link to the online version of this document and click on “apply now”. Prior to a learner’s start date you will be required to provide information about the learner’s abilities, attendance and behaviour. This will be used to inform an Individual Learning Plan that will be used throughout their study at the College.

What are the benefits of Discover Further Education? Discover Further Education is about self discovery and preparation for the future. By the end of the course, having experienced such a variety of courses, learners will have identified a progression route. Some of the work produced on Discover Further Education will be taken back into school as evidence of other qualifications. A Leicester College certificate will be achieved on completion of the course.

What if the application deadline has passed? As Discover Further Education is a carousel of learning, we should be able to welcome your learners after the course has started. However, places are limited so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment. What are the costs and how will payment be arranged? The cost per learner for the full 32 weeks is £1,440. The daily rate is £45. Learners can join at the start of any new four week subject block.


Ammar Sheikh Ammar Sheikh came to Leicester College when he was a learner at Moat Community College. He had always had an interest in cars. Because of his hard work, and the ability that he demonstrated while still at school, Ammar was able to go straight onto a Level 2 course at Leicester College when he left Moat. Ammar is now studying the Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle and Motor maintenance Repair.

Adeana ButtonAdeana Button came to Leicester College in year 10 when she was a learner at Rawlings Community College. Adeana felt that she was struggling to keep up at school.

Adeana was offered the opportunity to spend one day per week at Leicester College studying a course which introduced her to different curriculum areas. In particular, she found that she enjoyed catering. Not only did she discover a talent for practical work, she found that the course impacted positively on her key skills and general attitude. Now Adeana is working part time as a commis chef at Gino’s Pear Tree in Woodhouse Eaves and she is about to enrol on a level 2 catering course.
