A Message from Fr. Hurley Peace be with you. Someone just reminded me it is over six weeks since we entered this unprecedented time of no public Masses! Yet, here we are in the middle of the Easter season and entering the Blessed Virgin Mary’s special month of May. Our Lady of Perpetual Help seems very popular during this crisis. We have an awesome prayer to draw us into the Heart of Mary. Here, the Mother of God embraces all her children in need of healing and comfort. When I think of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the image that always comes to my mind is Michelangelo’s Pieta, now located in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It is a stunning image of Mary at the foot of the cross and her receiving the broken and crucified body of her son, our Lord and Savior. Despite His death and stricken body, Mary seems to embrace all the brokenness and pain the world inflicted on her son, our Lord and God. At the same time, she exhibits a calm and peacefulness that this is not the end. Mary, Mother of God, reminds us all that despite our pain she embraces it and ensures us that the goodness and glory of God will overcome everything painful, sorrowful or destructive. Mary, Mother of God, is the witness today, now, for all of us. She receives us the way she receives her son, Jesus Christ. The Pieta seems to depict all this. Would it be awesome to have a similar image or replica Pieta in our own St. Mary’s Church? In this fourth week of Easter the sacred scriptures include another favorite of mine; Psalm 23... The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul...Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side. This Psalm became a favorite for me during my years as chaplain in the Army. During deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan I made countless prayers for soldiers during the extremely dangerous times of combat; patrols, missions, flights, recons, medical evacs, etc. It was always this Psalm 23 that seems to bring calm and peace when the threats and dangers were the greatest. Perhaps Psalm 23 can be a great way to pray for all of us during this challenging period. Fr. Augustin and I continue to offer our private Masses each day and keep each of you in prayer during the greatest of all prayers.... the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! I am starting to think about getting everyone back at Mass and hope that we can start that first weekend (whenever it comes) with a festive gathering. It would be great to kick off public Masses with a great celebration or party of sorts. Perhaps we can form a team to plan a festival type weekend! If anyone is interested let me know. Our Lady of Victory, Pray for us! Fr. Hurley

A Reflection for the Fourth Sunday of Easter Peter stands up with the Eleven and preaches about Jesus, our “Lord and Christ.” When the people hear that it is by Christ’s wounds that they have been healed, they themselves are “cut to the heart.” They beg, “What are we to do, brothers?” They have found in the witness of the Apostles an authority they are eager to follow. This is what Jesus means when he says that the Good Shepherd walks ahead of his sheep, and that the sheep follow him “because they recognize his voice.” Good Shepherd Sunday celebrates the fulfillment of “the promise made to us” that God will send a Shepherd who will give us life “more abundantly.”

Feast of Corpus Christi, June 21, 2020 - Feast of Corpus Christi, June 6, 2021 “And behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

Cardinal Seán O’Malley has announced a Year of the Eucharist to bolster the faith of those who already believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to encourage those who struggle with this belief. Over the course of the next year and a half, the Cardinal invites all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Boston to learn more about the Eucharist and to spend more time before the Eucharistic Lord, asking Him to reveal Himself to you. “The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice”. Saint John Chrysostom put it well: “We always offer the same Lamb, not one today and another tomorrow, but always the same one. For this reason, the sacrifice is always only one... Even now we offer that victim who was once offered and who will never be consumed”. The Mass makes present the sacrifice of the Cross; it does not add to that sacrifice nor does it multiply it. What is repeated is its memorial celebration, … which makes Christ's one, definitive redemptive sacrifice always present in time.

There will be no ritual Exposition and Benediction, but the Blessed Sacrament will be simply exposed during those hours. There are no group gatherings of any sort but simply time and space for individuals to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. These are opportunities for individuals to pray with the Lord, to listen to the Lord or simply come to offer a prayer or a rosary. Again, these are individual opportunities for prayer at the church. Of course, we are all encouraged to pray no matter where we are. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

Inside the Mass: Liturgy of the Word (Part II) The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. For our reflection “Inside the mass” this weekend, we continue with the second and last part of the liturgy of the Word; we discuss the profession of Faith and the Prayer of the Faithful. The Profession of Faith (the Creed) A creed is a statement or summary of belief. The purpose of the Creed or Profession of Faith is that the whole assembly may respond to the Word of God proclaimed in the readings taken from Sacred Scripture and explained in the Homily. We stand when we recite the Creed. The Profession of Faith can either be the Nicene Creed (longer form), Apostle’s Creed (shorter form) or the renewal of our Baptismal Vows. The Creed is a statement of the truths which we hold as Catholic Christians. The Nicene Creed expresses our basic Catholic beliefs and enables the faithful to renew their faith and their baptismal commitment. It is recited or sung on all Sundays and solemnities. When we recite or sing this prayer together, we express not only our individual belief but the faith which all of us hold in common. We honor and confess the great mysteries of the faith by pronouncing the rule of faith, in a formula approved for liturgical use before the celebration of these mysteries in the Eucharist. The structure of the Creed reinforces our belief in the Holy Trinity, first addressing the Father, then the Son, and then the Holy Spirit, stressing that the three persons are one God. At the heart of our faith is our belief that God became one of us at the birth of Christ. To highlight our belief in this truth, we are asked to bow at the words in the Nicene Creed “By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man” or in the Apostle’s Creed “who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.” On Easter Sunday or on Sundays when we have baptisms, we are asked to renew our baptismal promises. We are asked about our belief, to which we respond “I do” to each statement of our faith. The renewal of our baptismal promises is also a creed, a statement of belief, based on the Apostle’s Creed. For us Christians, the Creed is a very important prayer! We return to these familiar “words of faith” week after week· to remind and refocus ourselves on the truth. The General Intercessions or Prayers of the Faithful The Prayers of the Faithful, also known as the General Intercessions or the Universal Prayers, take place at the conclusion of the Liturgy of the Word and serves to connect the Liturgy of the Word to the Liturgy of the Eucharist (the next part of the Mass). The structure of the Prayers of the Faithful is generally the same: A short introduction by the priest, followed by intercessions proclaimed by the lector or deacon and a short concluding prayer (called an oration) led by the priest. At the end of each petition, we respond “Lord hear our prayer” or another appropriate response. While there are no official texts for the Prayers of the Faithful, they follow a general order:

For the needs of the Church For public authorities and the salvation of the world For those burdened with any kind of difficulty For the local community (For vocations) For all those who have died For our own special intentions

When we pray in this way, we recognize our place within the larger community of the baptized and bring these prayers and intentions with us as we move forward in the Mass. There is a motto in Christian tradition, Lex Orandi, lex credendi, which means that prayer and belief are integral to each other and that liturgy is not distinct from theology; it refers to the relationship between worship and belief: the way we believe is the way we worship. As our faith gathers us every Sunday to worship, we remember that our faith is not without works (St James). We live out our faith in our community though concrete acts of charity, compassion, love and mercy. Peace be with you! Fr. Augustin

The Month of Mary As we enter the month of Mary, let’s learn about the rosary and its connection to the Blessed Mother Called "the New Testament on a string of beads," the Rosary is presented by famed Mariologist Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, in all its wonder: leading armies into battle; defeating the enemies of Christ and His Church; and transforming hearts and minds in order to save societies and entire civilizations. After exploring the 10 Wonders of the Rosary, you'll never look at this timeless and powerful devotion the same way again. In Fr. Calloway’s own words. “As you might guess, 10 Wonders of the Rosary has 10 chapters. Each chapter expounds on a particular wonder and contains four sections offering insights into the wonder:

a short story about the wonder, an explanation of the wonder, an example of the wonder in action, and words of wonder from popes and saints.

At the end of the book, I include a bonus wonder about how praying the rosary makes reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Hopefully, you’ll agree that the book is short and sweet, just like the rosary itself. I pray that this book blesses your life. The book may be purchased via Amazon and Barnes and Noble

Let’s meet on the Sundays of May from 2:00-3:00 via a Zoom conference. Please email LeiLanie D’Agostino at [email protected] to be sent a link for these sessions. The first session will NOT use the book, but other sessions will. A Call to Serve Update A heart-felt thank you to so many willing volunteers!! We contiue to seek individuals to make phone calls to our parishioners to check in on them and individuals to write short notes of hope and comfort to patients in hospitals who cannot receive any visitors and maybe feeling isolated, afraid and alone. If you are able, interested or even just curious for now, please contact LeiLanie D’Agostino at [email protected]

Earth Day Zoom Prayer Service This year we offered a prayer service for Earth Day utilizing Zoom! This was our Adult Faith Formation first zoom activity. It was short, but very meaningful and sweet! We hope YOU will be on the look out to sign-up and attend future Faith-based Zoom activities with us! Offertory Update Many thanks for your ongoing prayers and monetary support of St. Parish Family during these extremely difficult times. Your commitment to our church has helped us to navigate through the unchartered waters of this pandemic. The suspension of Masses and the offertory that is generated each week has made meeting our financial obligations very challenging. Our total parish income including offertory and donations over the past week netted approximately $4,800--far shy of the necessary $9,200 needed to operate “in the black”. We are grateful for all donations we have received and we are well aware that due to your own personal financial situation arising from COVID-19, you may be unable to donate at this time. We still have a very long road ahead of us as the path of this pandemic and it's far reaching effects are still uncertain. We continue to pray that with the help of you, our Parish family, we will be able to sustain our church. ONLINE GIVING remains the quickest and most effective way to accomplish your offertory giving. You can still MAIL your envelopes or checks to the Parish Office. For those attending daily adoration or quiet prayer in the Lower Church, there is a secure offertory box located outside the doors in the Gathering Room for those who wish to drop off their envelopes or donations (3pm-5pm). The link for online giving is listed below. If you need assistance with this, please contact the Parish Office. May God bless you and your families. Visit our online giving page at www.stmary-winchester.org/online-giving/.
