P r o l o g u e :

The Hunger Games is a battle to the death between 24 people, most of them trained killers. The Capitol runs this event. 75 years before this Hunger Games there were a group of rebels that went against the Capitol in a biologi-cal war. The capitol destroyed the rebels and created these Hunger Games to show how the Capitol is all mighty. The Hunger Games are forced, and since not very many people in the nation of Panam want to go to the Hunger Games there is a draw called “the reaping”. This is where all people from each district under the age of 18 have their name put in the reaping bowl. Then one girl and one boy are cho-sen to go to the Hunger Games.

Last year at the 74th Hunger Games Katniss’s little sister Prim turned 12, the age re-quired to have her name en-tered in the Hunger Games. Prim’s name was picked out of the reaping bowl. Katniss was horrified at the idea of her little sister fighting against 23 other people that prob-ably know how to kill. Kat-ness stepped out into the open and said, “I volunteer as trib-ute” saving Prim from go-ing to the Hunger Games.

Biography: Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is 17 and has broken every

rule in the nation of Panam to help her family

survive. When she finds herself trapped in the

Hunger Games, a forced death battle, it brings

out personality traits that she didn’t even

know she had. She had always helped people

that she cared about, but the games forced

her to mature quickly. She realized that she

didn’t just have to protect the people that

she cared about, but all people that needed

to be helped.

Fire1. What was going through your head when you first vol-unteered to go into the Hunger Games for Prim?

It was horrible. The thought of my little sister going into those god forsaken games made my stomach churn. This made me realize that the only other choice I had was to go in her place.

2. Now that you are going into the Hunger games with 23 other victor tributes what do you think is going to happen?

I really hope that my allies don’t betray me. I trust Peeta and my other allies, but its the Hunger Games. As to what I think is going to happen, I think that I will make it close to the end. Weather I live or not I’m not sure, but I really hope that Peeta and I prevail once more.

3. What do you think will hap-pen now that now there are up-risings in district 3,4,8, and 11?

I think that this will lead to more uprisings which may lead to another rebellion, like the one which happened 75 years ago.

4. What do you think Peeta is think-ing now that not only your wedding is cancelled, but one of you must die for the other to live?

I think that he will be doing everything in his power to keep me alive in the arena.

5. What do you think that President Snow is trying to gain by sending 2 vic-tor tributes from each district back into the arena?

I think that he is trying to get rid of the strong fighters in all of the districts. With fewer leaders a rebellion may not be able to form. As a result the rebels won’t have a fighting chance against the Capitol.

Salt of the earthSong Interpretation

The dawning of our lives is a realization of a rebel to some is a saint, but to oth-ers a rebel is a vigilante. Katniss is this rebel she didn’t mean to or want to be the symbol for rebellion. The meaning of this song to me is people have two sides to them and some people see one side and others see the other part of a person. In the song there is a fraise that says “she’s the one that they call old whatshername”. This shows how people sometimes hate things without even knowing what they hate. The song is saying that she is the missing link of de-struction. Because before she did her tour across Panem not very many people was thinking of rebellion. By this the song is saying that when she came it tipped the scales causing the group of rebels that this person is leading to have move hope and more power than the other group. An example of this is when the people of district four gathered together and destroyed all of the main buildings in their district to show that they’re starting a rebellion.

I think that this song relates to the book because Katniss (not on purpose) has become an icon for rebellion. Some people love Katniss even though they don’t even know her name. One of the reasons that I chose this dong for the book is because in the book Katniss is “the Mocking Jay” which is the new symbol for rebellion. Some people in Panem don’t even know what Katniss’s name is, but they still either hate her or love her. In the beginning of the second book when their in tour after the 74th Hunger Games people felt free until the Capi-tol came to quell it. So the main reason I chose this song is because in the song “She’s a Saint” and “Vigilante”. These are showing the views of the rebels and the Capitol. This says to me that some people praise Katniss and others despise her. These are just a few of the reasons that i chose this song to summarize this book.

The hunger games

have begun

Would you want to read a book about a Darwinian battle of the fittest where only the strongest survive? What if the characters were teenagers that you could relate to? With over six million copies sold, The Hunger Games Trilogy has been a booming success for all ages, especially for adolescents in junior high. Since teens seem to be reading less because of the popularity of video games and TV, the availability of an exciting book series like The Hunger Games could reignite interest in reading. In this essay I will explain to you why this series should be part of the grade eight curriculum. I will discuss how the books are suspenseful, how the characters are easy to relate to, and how The Hunger Games Trilogy con-nects to people in emotional ways.


The second reason that I think that The Hunger Games should be part of the grade eight curriculum is because the characters are easy to relate to. People in our society today like to read books that are interesting, but they love to read books that have characters that they can identify with. I know this because when I read the first book, I felt like I knew the char-acters, and how they felt about some of the problems they were facing. Obviously there were situations that they faced that were life and death that are different then anything that I have to face, but there were many other situations that teenagers have to deal with in their every day lives. Grade eights can also relate to the characters, because of the fact that the main characters are teenagers. Yes they are a little bit older than grade eights, but readers still feel like they know the characters and can relate to their problems.

My first reason for thinking that The Hunger Games Trilogy should be part of the grade eight curriculum is that it is exciting and has a very suspenseful plot. Suspense is what keeps the reader interested and is what causes them to not only keep reading, but to tell their friends about the book and how good it is. Eighth graders will be bouncing off the walls with excitement to read a book that is popular, fast moving, and not plain or dull. An example of this is how the second book ends with a cliffhanger, when the lead character is in a life or death situation and you don’t know what is going to happen next. This makes the reader very interested in the next book and keeps them reading.


Throughout this essay I have explained how The Hunger Games Trilogy should be part of the grade eight curriculum. I explained how they are suspenseful books that almost any grade eight student would love to read. I also mentioned the fact that The Hunger Games have characters that we as teenagers can relate to. My final reason was the fact that The Hunger Games Trilogy connects to people emotionally. These are just a few of the main reasons that I firmly believe that The Hunger Games Trilogy should most definitely be part of the grade eight curriculum. I hope that you see the many advantages of this series and that you add it to the grade eight school curriculum. The Hunger Games will stay. “The Hunger Games have begun”.

The third reason that I think The Hunger Games should be part of the grade eight curriculum is because the books connect to every one who reads them in an emotional manner. An example of this is during the first book, one of the key characters dies. That character was the youngest, smallest, and the most helpless and it was very sad part of the book. It highlighted emotion and respect in a situation where evil and disrespect were everywhere. Everyone that I know who read the book loved this character and had her as their favorite character. They all felt the same as me when this character died.
