Quantities often have to be shared. Sometimes the quantity is not evenly divided.

Example 1

Megan and Kathrine share the profit from their business in the ratio 4 : 3.What will each receive if the total profit is £2100?

Step 1

Add up numbers in ratio to find the total number of parts. No. of parts 4 3 7

Step 2

Divide total by this number to find the value of 1 part. Value of 1 part £2100 7 £300

Step 3

Multiply the value of 1 part by each number in the ratio. Megan’s share 4 £300 £1200Kathrine’s share 3 £300 £900

Step 4

Check that the shares add to give the total. £1200 £900 £2100 correct totalMegan receives £1200 and Kathrine receives £900.This can be more conveniently set out in a proportion table:

Megan receives £1200 and Kathrine receives £900.
