September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967,
was an American soul singer. Dead at age 26, in a plane crash,
my favorite memory of Otis is in the song
“Sitting in the Dark of the Bay”
which vibrated in the New York basements in the ’60s.

HAITI Haiti at a crossroads as donations dry up
Haiti at a crossroads as donations
dry up and upheaval looms.
BY JACQUELINE CHARLES
PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Hundreds were killed and tens of thousands left homeless in 2008 when hurricane rains
washed their homes away. Joblessness deepened. Malnutrition magnified. Farms failed. Haiti's misery is
expected to deepen this year as its crippled economy and the global financial crisis collide with donor fatigue and
increasing frustrations about the lack of social and economic progress.
''There is Haiti fatigue, or rather Haiti impatience, that after three to four years very little has been accomplished, and all
of those natural catastrophes have compounded the problem,'' said Robert Fatton, a University of Virginia
politics professor and Haiti expert. ``2009 is going to be a very difficult year in Haiti.'' The gloomy prognosis is widespread here and comes amid a global financial
meltdown that has largely detracted world attention from the storms' devastation, the worst humanitarian disaster to hit Haiti in 100 years. The grim outlook also comes as the
focus shifts to constitutional reform and pending legislative elections. If not handled delicately, both could create a
political storm with far-reaching ramifications, analysts and diplomats say.
Since the creation of Haiti's 1987 Constitution, the country has gone through several major political crises, most of them prompted by contested elections. In an address to parliament
this week, President René Préval said while Haiti has a respite from the agony of unrest, it remains at a fragile
crossroads. He stressed the need for political and national dialogue.''It's easier for each sector to stand alone and to
criticize, and say what should have been done or what could be done. Why not sit down together to do what needs to be
done,'' said Préval, who also emphasized the need for judicial reform, and modernizing the country in areas of
technology and competitiveness. ``Dialogue is necessary, but it has to be constructed. It has to be organized.''
Haiti also needs investments and development. In recent months, Préval has accused donors of not doing enough to help Haiti crawl its way out of misery, and has called for
fewer tanks from the United Nations peacekeeping force and more tractors. Over the next week, donor nations will assess
the needs in Haiti with visits from Governor General Michaelle Jean of Canada on Thursday and Queen Sofia of Spain next week. Foreign diplomats, meanwhile, say Préval and Haiti's lackluster parliament lack focus and a sense of
urgency. ''The international community may be tired of Haiti, but if there is no money, you will have more people coming to'' South Florida, said Alix Loriston, former U.N.
World Food Program coordinator in Gonaives.
The epicenter of the disaster, Gonaives, still lacks a clear road map for its future. There is talk of reconstruction, but the absence of a government plan about what to do -- and
money to either rebuild or relocate the historical city -- has left Gonaives' 300,000 residents with few options. Many
remain in shelters and on rooftops, while others have had no other choice but to return to their mud-encased homes.
BACK-TO-BACK CRISES
The storms struck just as Haiti was starting to show signs of progress after years of instability. Inflation was in the single digits, and 7,500 new jobs were injected into its stagnant job market after the U.S. Congress approved a textile trade bill.
Then came the fuel and food crisis, followed by a nearly five-month political impasse, the international economic
meltdown and finally the storms. In a span of three weeks, Tropical Storm Fay, Hurricane Gustav, Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike pounded the country, killing
nearly 800, washing away livestock and millions of dollars' worth of rice, corn and plantain crops.

By LEONARD PITTS JR.
(some extracts condensed)
``History. We don't know. We'll all be dead.'' George W. Bush
Dear President Bush:
I am glad you are, at 62, still a relatively young man. I am glad you are in robust health. This means there is a good
likelihood of your being with us for decades yet to come, and I dearly want that. You see, history's verdict is on the way,
and I want you to see it for yourself.
Your failures rush readily to mind: Katrina, Abu Ghraib, Justice Department scandal, torture, Iraq War, Social
Security, immigration . . . You leave a legacy of regression and division, and a nation worse off by multiple measures
than before you took office.
But you know what, sir? That's not even the worst of it. No, the worst is the way you turned our government into a
wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party, the way you disdained objective truth in favor of ideological fiction,
the way you treated dissent as disloyalty, the way you repeatedly poured sewage on our heads and swore it was
water from a mountain spring.
So yes, I'm happy you'll likely be around 20 years from now. Because, contrary to what you seem to think, it doesn't take centuries to get some initial sense of history's verdict. That
takes about a generation. Meaning that when history weighs
in on your presidency, you'll probably be here to see it. And I don't think you're going to like it.
Yes, I'm stepping out on a limb here. The future is, by definition, unknowable. But it is simply inconceivable to me that history will judge you anything but harshly. Frankly, I think it will judge us all that way, will marvel at the things
we let you get away with, the principles Americans can betray, when they are scared.
As with the internment of the Japanese during World War II, and the McCarthy excesses of the 1950s, I think fear will be the defining statement of this era. Fear, and the terrible
things we did, condoned and became as a result.
Godspeed, then, Mr. Bush. Good health and long life. I hope
you live to hear history itself tell you what an awful president you were.
THOUGHTS FOR TODAY
In every person who comes near you look for
what is good and strong; honor that; try to
imitate it, and your faults will drop off like
dead leaves when their time comes.
He is a man of sense who does not grieve for
what he has not, but rejoices in what he has.
True religion is the life we lead, not the
creed we profess.

when god is too busy
God is too busy to rescue drowning children, too busy to stop the flow of blood, too busy to notice the suffering of Haiti, so Gina
Athena Ulysse prays to other gods. From behind the curtain, before her entrance on the La Mama stage, she sings a Vodou song.
Ezili, save us as we are drowning she chants repeatedly as if in a trance, as if it were an incantation, as one endlessly says a rosary, and it is interminable this chant, as one says a rosary, Ezili, save us
as we are drowning, because as one says a rosary endlessly, repeatedly, interminably, one keeps in memory events or mysteries in our history and it is true that we are drowning and it is true that we
should be saved Ezili, save us as we are drowning.
Weaving her powerful storypoems with these chants, Ulysse is ruthless, tender, sassy, and sometimes heartbreaking in her one-woman performance “Because When God is Too Busy: Haiti, Me and the World”. Whether exploring her rage at the dehumanization of Haitians: because they are too dark, too rebellious, not French enough, never, never, never French enough…the ones Soeur Cecile called burnt potatoes and for whose salvation Ulysse prayed nightly
Forgive her God for she does not know what she is doing, or reminiscing about spending the night on her knees, punished by her
father and praying God whom she appointed her real father, disowning her real father as Ponce Pilate, she sends us messages
from the interior and is at once intimate and generously collective in a fascinating interplay that blurs the lines beween herself and her
country:
Ezili, Look what the mortals are doing to me
I planted corn it turned into a reed
the reed turned into bamboo it turned into a knife
to stab me…
Dear Gina,
I don’t know you but you know me, you don’t know me but I know you, we have eaten the same yellow-fleshed almonds from the same almond trees, passed by the same gates where vines intertwine, I have knelt down to pray as you have and I have tried to imagine,
imagine, imagine all the people…but it’s hard girl, isn’t it? with what is happening everywhere in these countries we love…But tonight you
made it sweeter with your poetry and your fantastic talent and I thank you for it.
Michele Voltaire Marcelin
Ulysse was born in Pétion-Ville, Haiti. An anthropologist by training, she is also a
poet/performer and multi-media artist. When she is not expressing her rage, she is a professor at Wesleyan
University.

Cuban Pete, mambo king, dies at 81
BY JORDAN LEVIN
Pedro ''Cuban Pete'' Aguilar, an emblem of Latin dance and
the mambo era, died Tuesday morning in Miami. He was 81
and had tickets to Friday's concert tribute to Machito and Tito
Puente, the bandleaders whose music inspired Aguilar when
he was the hottest thing on the dance floor of New York's
Palladium, the famed 1950s nightclub.
Aguilar was a black Puerto Rican born on the island and raised
in the New York barrio. His most famous partner in the 1950s
and 1960s was a white woman, Millie Donay. He was featured
in Life magazine and performed at the White House for
Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson; on The
Jackie Gleason Show; at Madison Square Garden, and with top
orchestras across the country.
He was a consultant on the film The Mambo Kings, and made
the rounds at dance conferences, schools, contests and
workshops; teaching, performing, speaking and accepting
awards. Filmmakers from Bravo, Univisión and more sought
him out for documentaries on Latin music.
He was also passionate about building respect for Afro-Cuban
and Latin music and dance. ''He believed that Latin music and
dance has a history and culture that doesn't receive the
respect that it should,'' Craddock said.
As sharp in his dress as he was in his eye for whether people
were dancing to his exacting standards, Aguilar would walk
away in disgust from anyone not on rhythm.
In the late '90s, he was a regular at Starfish, the South Beach
club that was the center of the Cuban-style salsa known as
rueda.
''He loved seeing a whole new generation of dancers,''
recalled Debbie Ohanian, Starfish's owner. 'To him, that was
really thrilling. He would stand on the side and tell me, `That's
not how it's done, they're not dancing right, but at least
they're dancing.' ''
REMARKS FROM CARL
At age 19, in the famous Palladium night club in New York City
in the fifties, I met Tony Aguilar and we became friends. He
was then only 24 and King of the Palladium. Memories are
made of this.
