Compressed Air System Safety Yoke Mechanism

The safety yoke is a mechanicaldevice that can fail. Never rely on thesafety yoke mechanism as an excuseto point the stapler at yourself or anybystanders. Serious injury may occur.

Exceeding the maximum permissibleoperating pressure may cause the sta-pler to explode, blowing metal frag-ments in all directions. To protectyourself from serious personal injury,DO NOT allow your air compressor toexceed the recommended pressurewhen connected to this stapler!

The Model G6044/G6772 is designed to beoperated at 80-120 psi. Do not exceedthe maximum operating pressure!

Before you use your new stapler, regulatethe air pressure on your air compressor tobarely over the minimum psi for yourmodel. Increase air pressure only if need-ed.

Many pneumatic tools benefit from an in-line filter/lubricator/regulator unit. Thisattachment is connected by hosesbetween the air compressor and the sta-pler. Using this unit protects your tool fromdamaging water build-up, allows you toadjust and maintain constant air pressureto your tool, and saves you the inconve-nience of having to manually lubricate yourtool every time you use it. Check the cur-rent Grizzly catalog for availability of thisunit. If you plan on installing a filter/lubrica-tor/regulator unit in your compressed airsystem, always follow the connectioninstructions that come with the unit.

A safety yoke mechanism on the nose ofthe stapler acts as a safety device. Whenthe trigger is pressed, the stapler will notfire until the safety yoke mechanism isdepressed.

Before you use your stapler for the firsttime, check the safety yoke mechanism toensure proper function. To do this:

1. Make sure the stapler is discon-nected from the air supply!

2. Make sure the magazine is empty andcontains no staples.

3. Make sure the trigger and the safetyyoke mechanism move up and downwithout sticking.

4. Connect the stapler to the air supply.5. Without pressing the trigger,

depress the safety yoke mechanismagainst a scrap piece of wood that isclean and free of any knots, staples,or other foreign objects. If the staplerdoes not fire, then the safety yokemechanism is working correctly. If thestapler does fire when you do this, immediately disconnect the staplerfrom the air supply and call our cus-tomer service for help.

Similarly if the stapler fires when the triggeris pulled, without the safety yoke mech-anism being depressed, then the stapleris not working properly.

If either of these two conditions developafter you have used your stapler for a peri-od of time, check the lubrication of thesemechanisms.

Operating Stapler

If you have not read the safety instruc-tions in this manual, do not operate thestapler.

Before the first operation, and periodicallyafter that, place one drop of the included oilinto the quick connect fitting where the sta-pler connects to the air supply. After oiling, wipe off any excess oil near the staplerexhaust to avoid dust build-up.

To operate your stapler:

1. Connect the air supply to the quickconnect fitting.

2. Test the loaded stapler for properpenetration. Hold the stapler perpen-dicular to the surface of a piece ofclean scrap wood that is thick enoughfor the length of staples you haveloaded. Depress the safety yokemechanism on your workpiece.

3. Before pressing the trigger, makesure your free hand is positioned outof the way of a potential path of a sta-ple in case of deflection. (Deflection iscaused when the staple changes itspath, resulting in the staple puncturingthe surface of the workpiece asshown in Figure 4.)Besides damaging your workpiece, deflection can cause injury if your free

hand is securing the workpiece in thelocation that the staple deflects.

4. Press the trigger. If the staple droveinto the wood far enough, continuewith your intended operations. If thestaple either went too far or not farenough, then adjust the air pressure.More air pressure will make the staplego deeper and less air pressure willdecrease the staple penetration.

Always disconnect air from staplerwhenever clearing a jammed staple!

Clearing Jammed Staples

The most frequent situation that may occurwith any type of stapler is a staple jam. Ajammed staple must be cleared beforeusing the stapler again. The two placeswhere a staple can get jammed are themagazine and the discharge area.

To clear a jammed staple from the dis-charge area:

1. Disconnect the stapler from the airsupply!

2. Remove all of the staples from themagazine.

3. Flip the quick release latch on thenose of the pliers, and remove fromthe nose as shown in Figure 5.

4. The jammed staple should now bevisible; remove it from the dischargearea with needle nose pliers.

5. Replace the quick release latch. Placeundamaged staples back on the mag-azine and engage the pusher.

To clear a jammed staple from the maga-zine:

1. Disconnect the stapler from the airsupply!

2. Pull the magazine pusher all the wayback.

3. Locate and remove the jammed sta-ple with a pair of needle nose pliers.

4. Place undamaged staples back on themagazine and engage the pusher.

Cleaning Stapler

Use a good solvent to clean the noseassembly of the stapler. Always be surethat the stapler is dry before using it again.

Do not allow dust, chips, sand, etc. into theair connectors or into the body of the sta-pler; this may result in leaks and damageto the stapler and the air couplings.

Never use gasoline or other flamma-ble liquids to clean this tool. Vaporsin the tool may ignite, causing thetool to explode. Ignoring this warningmay lead to serious personal injury oreven death!

Always disconnect air from staplerwhenever servicing! During mainte-nance, a stapler connected to airmay fire accidentally, causing seri-ous personal injury!

Oiling Stapler

The Model G6044/G6772 is considered anoil-less model. This means it features ateflon piston assembly that does notrequire oil to operate. However, periodicapplications of oil will extend the useful lifeof the piston assembly.

Special oil has been included with you newGrizzly stapler. Periodically place one dropof oil in the stapler air inlet (as shown inFigure 6). After oiling, wipe off any excessoil near the stapler exhaust to avoid dustbuild-up. When the oil that was includedwith the stapler has been completely used, replace with Grizzly Model G2820Pneumatic Tool Oil.

Another option to manual oiling would beto install a lubricator in your air compressorline. If your air compressor line already hasa lubricator, then regular lubrication of yourstapler will not be necessary. Just makesure there is always oil in the lubricator.

As mentioned before, the best option is toinstall a filter/lubricator/regulator unit suchas the Grizzly Model H2333 in your air line.

Replacing Pistons/O-Rings

If you use your stapler day in and day out,Grizzly offers repair pistons as cheapinsurance against wasted down time andlost profits in the event that a piston or pis-ton shaft becomes worn out. To replace apiston:

Figure 7. Removing stapler exhaust cap.

8. With a long flathead screwdriver orsimilarly shaped tool, push the pistonshaft back inside the stapler until youcan grip the piston head and removeit from the cylinder. (Be careful not toscratch the discharge area whenpushing the piston shaft with thescrewdriver.)

9. Place a new O-ring on the new pistonand apply a thin film of the staplerlubricating oil on the O-ring.

10. Insert the new piston in the cylinder.Make sure that the grooves on thepiston shaft line up with those on thenose guide at the bottom of the cylin-der. The new piston should easilyslide into the cylinder. Do not forcethe piston into the cylinder! If thepiston is not easily inserted, double-check the alignment of the pistonshaft with the grooves on the guide.

11. After the piston is inserted correctly, close the magazine. Replace the rearcap assembly and tighten the 4 capscrews.

12. For more assistance, or to install acomplete O-ring set, refer to theappropriate breakdown diagram in theback of this manual.

Always disconnect air from staplerwhenever servicing! During mainte-nance, a stapler connected to airmay fire accidentally, causing seri-ous personal injury!

1. Disconnect the stapler from the airsupply!

2. Remove all staples from the maga-zine.

3. Remove the 4 cap screws from thestapler exhaust cap.

4. Remove the exhaust cap as shown inFigure 7.

5. The top of the piston should now bevisible inside the cylinder, which ishoused in the head of the stapler.
