Last Saturday saw the Club rooms

transformed for Ladies Day and a fantastic

day was had by all. Money was raised for a

very worthy cause—Assist A Sista. This

great organisation brings awareness to

domestic violence through education and

action. They make a positive difference,

one family at a time.

Thank you to everyone who contributed

to making this day such a success.

Thanks to the seniors who took part in

the hilarious Mr. Eltham competition.

There were lots of laughs and some

swooning by the naughty Eltham ladies!!

Former Mr. Eltham, Riley Bain, hands over his tiara to

James Hansen on a very successful night at Eltham rugby

club.

On Wednesday the Under 14s played a rare night time game against

Northern Panthers. It was a hard fought match but unfortunately the

boys couldn’t get the result in the end. The 14s played well and took

some great lessons from the game. It was also a nice experience as

most of the boys had never played a game under lights.

The under 14 team went on to play on that Saturday, going down to

Maroondah in a very close effort.

Eltham A vs Kiwi Hawthorn

This was the ultimate grudge match between two rival

sides. Eltham beat the Kiwis in the Final last year and lost

to them earlier this year. A heavy knock to Will Taurima

saw him taken off early, but true to form the Eltham boys

pulled through to defeat Kiwi Hawthorn 10-8.

Eltham B vs Monash University

A big day at Eltham for our annual Ladies’ Day Lunch, with the girls expecting big

things both on and off the field with the Mr. Eltham contest to be held later that

evening. For once, Eltham started strongly, with early tries to Will Hiser and Bryce

Whakahoehoe on the back of strong forward runs with Petrus Jurgens prominent.

Mind you, Bryce’s premature celebration before touching down did elicit disap-

proval from the old heads prowling the sideline. The 12-0 lead clearly played

games with Eltham’s concentration, allowing Monash to put the ball wide to score

in the corner to cut the lead to 12-5. Eltham hit back; a penalty in front of the

posts (for most clubs an opportunity to kick for goal but not at Eltham), a quick

tap and a rolling maul with Josh Luatutu going close before a sylph-like Petrus

strolled through to give Eltham a 19-5 lead with the conversion. Will was having a

busy game in attack and defence, as Monash pressed back. Elliot Bennie made a

classic try saving tackle while Te Rimene saved a certain try with an attempted in-

tercept. A string of penalties kept Eltham in their own 22 before the half-time

whistle gave the boys a breather with the score at 19-10.

The familiar “charitable” side of Eltham’s rugby emerged during the second half;

as soon as we got the ball, we quickly handed it back to Monash, be it in the form

of a knock-on, loose pass, failure to put the ball in touch or a series of penalties.

As a result, much of the game was spent with Monash camped in Eltham’s half.

Once consequence of this was a big defensive effort form the Eltham side, with

Kayden Johnson, Josh Davis, Te and Nick Steel contributing. There were moments

for Eltham, with Alex (“I’ll show you who the real Steel is”) Steel making a number

of breaks in attack. Three second-half tries (two converted) had given Monash a

29-15 lead before Eltham lifted with the clock winding down. In probably their

best passage of play for the match, Eltham broke out of their own 22 through a

strong run by Luke and, aided by a number of penalties, found themselves close to

the Monash line. A lineout win, a scrum and Tye Malone scores next to the posts

after Petrus went close. Down 29-26, Eltham attacked from the kick-off, only to be

undone by a turnover and the full-time whistle. More composure and better ball

control and the match could easily have gone the other way.

Saturday morning saw two great sides play a tough match.

Unfortunately a fantastic defensive display from Eltham

wasn’t enough to stop a motivated Southern Districts side,

going down 19-25.

It was great for the boys to be playing at home in the weekend and even better to see a number of other club members along to support them.

We played the boys (more aptly called men mountains) from Footscray and it was a good physical encounter with a number of great tackles made and taken by both teams. As usual our boys did not hesitate to take turns in helping out the other team which did not have the full numbers, and these boys although playing for the other team did not hold back in making some hard tackles and great line breaks against their own team, so everyone made the most of their Saturday morning. Thanks again go to Dave Taylor for refereeing and for Owen Waiomio for volunteering for his usual role of very vocal linesman.

Although scores for pathways are not recorded, Footscray were able to score 3 tries and our boys ran in 7 (2 for Roman and Wyatt, and one each for Conner, Austin and Joe). This week we are away at Seaford, however will be back at home in 2 weeks time. We hope that some more of you can get down to support the boys at 9:00. Believe me it is really appreciated.

Whether it’s the U9’s or the 1st XV, the right fuelling before a match will give you, and your team, the edge. Here’s a guide to getting break-fast right from top sports nutrition author, Kate Percy...

Every car needs fuel.

The more fuel in the tank, the further the car will go. The better quality the fuel, the better the car will drive. Your body works in exactly the same way. Start your morning with a full tank and you’ll keep going for longer. Fill your tank with the good stuff and you’ll perform at your best.

1. Go Slow

Do your team like sugary, processed cereals and white bread? If they do, keep these for after training or match, or for holiday treats. Why?

They’re quick-release foods. Rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, they give a spike in energy, a “sugar high”. Great, but this energy is used up quickly. What follows is a slump – players will feel tired and in a bad mood.

Slow-release carbohydrate is the name of the game at breakfast. That’s foods like oats, wholewheat cereals, wholemeal bread and bananas. But it’s not just about carbs: did you know that a combo of carbs, pro-tein and healthy fats will sustain your energy levels for even longer? And these will help you concentrate and boost your mood too.

Most of us are pretty manic at breakfast time, so keep it quick, easy and simple:

Porridge oats with milk, syrup, nuts and fruit.

Try porridge with blueberries and maple syrup.

Scrambled or poached eggs on wholemeal toast Wholegrain toast with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, or peanut butter.

Muesli or homemade granola with yoghurt, and chopped fruit.

Wholegrain cereals such as Weetabix and Shredded Wheat with milk and banana.

2. Mind your Pees!

You won’t have drunk anything since the previous evening, so it’s im-portant you drink a glass of milk, juice or water with your breakfast.

Even slight dehydration reduces your ability to play at your best.

Before they leave the house, they can check they’ve drunk enough by looking at the colour of their pee. It should be light-yellow coloured.

3. Match-day nerves?

It’s quite common to feel so nervous and pent up on match day that you find it difficult to eat. Though players might be a little worried, they do need to take on board some calories for energy. Help them to work out their own morning routine. Perhaps they (or mum or dad) can make some flapjacks or healthy muffins the night before and have one of these in the morning with a glass of milk.

4. Don’t lie-in on match day!

Leaving enough time to eat a proper breakfast is as important as pre-paring your kit the night before. Your players need to eat around one hour before training or warm up starts. This gives the stomach time to digest their food.

Ask your players to set their alarms 15 minutes early and start their day by sitting down to enjoy a good breakfast.

Too nervous to eat?

Smoothies can be easier to stomach than a solid breakfast. Try this “Banana Power Shake” - whizz a glass of milk or drinking yoghurt in a blender, add a banana, a handful of oats, a spoonful of drinking choco-late or honey.
