    Sites along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers are excluded. For each river, its bankull discharge is

    approximated by the annual peak discharge exceeded in two-thirds o the years, which corresponds

    to a 1.5-year ood recurrence interval (Leopold 1994). A ood occurrence is then dened as an an-

    nual peak discharge greater than its bankull discharge.
