and Z gamma gamma couplings in pp(-) collisions at root s=1.96 TevSO PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERSLA EnglishDT ArticleID GAUGE-BOSON COUPLINGS; P(P)OVER-BAR COLLISIONS; LEP; SEARCHAB We present a measurement of the Z gamma production cross section and limits on anomalous ZZ gamma and Z gamma gamma couplings for form-factor scales of Lambda=750 and 1000 GeV. The measurement is based on 138 (152) candidates in the ee gamma (mu mu gamma) final state using 320(290) pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV. The 95% C.L. limits on real and imaginary parts of individual anomalous couplings are vertical bar h(10,30)(Z)vertical bar < 0.23, vertical bar h(20,40)(Z)vertical bar < 0.020, vertical bar h(10,30)(gamma)vertical bar < 0.23, and vertical bar h(20,40)(gamma)vertical bar < 0.019 for Lambda=1000 GeV.C1 Joint Inst Nucl Res, Dubna, Russia. We describe the analysis of the two decay modes, D-s(+)->phi(1020)pi(+) and D-s(+)->(K) over bar*(892)K-0(+), used for the measurement. The measured lifetime is 507.4 +/- 5.5(stat)+/- 5.1(syst) fs using 8961 +/- 105 D-s(+)->phi(1020)pi(+) and 4680 +/- 90 D-s(+)->(K) over bar*(892)K-0(+) decays. This is a significant improvement over the present world average.C1 Univ Calif Davis, Davis, CA 95616 USA. Ctr Brasileiro Pesquisas Fis, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. PHYSICAL REVIEW DLA EnglishDT ArticleID STANDARD-MODEL; POLARIZATION; B->S-GAMMA; HELICITY; PHYSICSAB We present a measurement of the fraction f(+) of right-handed W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of t (t) over bar events in the lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 230 pb(-1), collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider at root s=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the kinematics of the t (t) over bar and decay products, which allows for the measurement of the leptonic decay angle theta(*) for each event. By comparing the cos theta(*) distribution from the data with those for the expected background and signal for various values of f(+), we find f(+)=0.00 +/- 0.13(stat)+/- 0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the standard model prediction of f(+)=3.6 x 10(-4).C1 Univ Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, DF, Argentina. Ctr Brasileiro Pesquisas Fis, LAFEX, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. PT JAU Kuznetsov, YK Galvao, RMO Usuriaga, OC Krasheninnikov, SI Soboleva, TK Tsypin, VS Fonseca, AMM Ruchko, LF Sanada, EKTI Recombinative plasma in electron runaway dischargeSO PHYSICS OF PLASMASLA EnglishDT ArticleID POSITIVE VOLTAGE SPIKES; TCABR TOKAMAK; AVALANCHEAB Cold recombinative plasma is the basic feature of the new regime of runaway discharges recently discovered in the Tokamak Chauffage Alfven Bresilien tokamak [R. M. O. Galvao , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 43, 1181 (2001)]. With low plasma temperature, the resistive plasma current and primary Dreicer process of runaway generation are strongly suppressed at the stationary phase of the discharge. In this case, the runaway avalanche, which has been recently recognized as a novel important mechanism for runaway electron generation in large tokamaks, such as International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, during disruptions, and for electric breakdown in matter, is the only mechanism responsible for toroidal current generation and can be easily observed. The measurement of plasma temperature by the usual methods is a difficult task in fully runaway discharges. In the present work, various indirect evidences for low-temperature recombinative plasma are presented. The direct observation of recombinative plasma is obtained as plasma detachment from the limiter. The model of cold recombinative plasma is also supported by measurements of plasma density and H-alpha emission radial profiles, analysis of time variations of these parameters due to the relaxation instability, estimations of plasma resistivity from voltage spikes, and energy and particle balance calculations. Public and private donors have marshaled resources and created organizational structures to accelerate the development of new health products and to procure and distribute drugs and vaccines for the poor. Despite these encouraging efforts directed primarily from and funded by industrialized countries, sufficiency and sustainability remain enormous challenges because of the sheer magnitude of the problem. Here we highlight a complementary and increasingly important means to improve health equity: the growing ability of some developing countries to undertake health innovation.C1 Fiocruz MS, Ctr Technol Dev Hlth, BR-21040900 Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. On the basis of available experimental data and high-level quantum chemical calculations, a detailed reaction mechanism is proposed taking into account solvation effects of the medium. On the basis of our computational results, we explain why the density of the liquid media and stirring rates are the most important parameters to achieve maximum yield of alkylate, in agreement with experimental findings. The ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics calculations show that isobutylene is irreversibly protonated in the liquid HF medium at higher densities, leading to the ion pair formation, which is shown to be a minimum on the potential energy surface after optimization using periodic boundary conditions. The HF medium solvates preferentially the fluoride anion, which is found as solvated [FHF](-) or solvated F(-)center dot(HF)(3). On the other hand, the tert-butyl cation is weakly solvated, where the closest HF molecules appear at a distance of about 2.9 angstrom with the fluorine termination of an HF chain.C1 Fed Univ Rio De Janeiro, Inst Quim, BR-21949900 Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. PT JAU Pereira, PR Odashiro, AN Rodrigues-Reyes, AA Correa, ZMS de Souza, JP Burnier, MNTI Histopathological review of sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelidSO JOURNAL OF CUTANEOUS PATHOLOGYLA EnglishDT ArticleID SQUAMOUS-CELL CARCINOMA; BASAL-CELL; CHALAZIONAB Background: Sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid can clinically mimic benign conditions, such as recurrent chalazion and inflammation and histopathologically squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). This retrospective study was undertaken as an attempt to improve the characterization and consequently the diagnosis of these tumors. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on eyelid specimens diagnosed as sebaceous carcinoma retrieved from Henry C. Witelson Ophthalmic Pathology Registry, Canada and Hospital Luis S. Bulnes Pathology Registry, Mexico. Two independent, masked pathologists reviewed the H&E microslides. Results: Forty-four cases were retrieved, 31 from Canada and 13 from Mexico. Cytoplasmic vacuoles were observed in 48% of the cases. Eighty-four percent of the cases were classified as poorly differentiated lesions. Of these, 75% had features similar to squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC), some with dyskeratosis (30%) and 7% resembled BCC. Solid growth pattern was seen in 26.2% of the cases and lobular growth pattern in 26.2%. Superficial spread resembling Bowen-like disease was observed in 33% of the cases, pagetoid features in 33% and comedocarcinoma in 31.8%. Conclusion: Sebaceous carcinoma presented as a poorly differentiated lesion in most cases of this series, which suggests a possibility of misdiagnosis because of its similarities to SqCC.C1 Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Ophthalmol, Sao Paulo, Brazil. PT JAU Petricevich, VL Lebrun, ITI Immunomodulatory effects of the Tityus serrulatus venom on murine macrophage functions in vitroSO MEDIATORS OF INFLAMMATIONLA EnglishDT ArticleID TUMOR-NECROSIS-FACTOR; SCORPION TOXIN TITYUSTOXIN; GROWTH-FACTOR-BETA; NITRIC-OXIDE; PERITONEAL-MACROPHAGES; TREATED MACROPHAGES; CYTOKINE RELEASE; SNAKE-VENOM; K+ CHANNEL; MOUSEAB Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom (TSV) consists of a very complex mixture of molecules and demonstrates significant immunomodulatory activities capable of stimulating immune functions in vivo. The purpose of this study was to compare the crude TSV with fractionated toxins extracted from this venom in order to determine which toxin(s) presented immunomodulatory effects oil peritoneal macrophages. TSV was fractionated using gel filtration chromatography resulting in 5 heterogeneous fractions. The effects of these different fractions were analysed in vitro using detection by means of cytokines, oxygen intermediate metabolites (H2O2), and nitric oxide (NO) in supernatants of peritoneal macrophages. Several functional bioassays were employed: tumor necrosis factor (TNF) activity was assayed by measuring its cytotoxic activity in L929 Cells, and other cytokines were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, whereas NO levels were detected by Griess colorimetric reactions in culture supernatant of macrophages exposed to different fractions. In vitro studies revealed that all fractions studied here presented an increment in H2O2, NO, and cytokines levels. The more pronounced increments were observed in macrophage cultures exposed to fraction I'll which demonstrated that (a) the highest levels of IL-1 alpha, IL-beta, and TNF were observed after 12 hours and that (b) the maximum levels of IFN-gamma and NO were observed after 72 hours. Taken together, these data indicate that fractions have a differential immunomodulating effect on macrophage secretion, and that FII is a potent activator of TNF production of macrophages.C1 Univ Autonoma Estado Morelos, Fac Med, Cuernavaca 62210, Morelos, Mexico. Proposal 1584 would retypify Acacia: the type of the Australian taxon A. penninervis would be conserved over the current lectotype (A. scorpioides) of an African taxon. We disagree with the recommendation of the Spermatophyte Committee to endorse this proposal. Contrary to Article 14.12 of the ICBN, no detailed case against conservation was presented in Proposal 1584. We maintain that there are strong arguments against conservation, such as the large number of countries that would be affected, the economic importance of the extra-Australian species, and the economic burden placed on developing countries. Acceptance of this proposal would also violate the guidelines for conservation which clearly state that the principle of priority should prevail when conservation for one part of the world would create disadvantageous change in another part of the world.C1 Cornell Univ, Dept Plant Biol, LH Bailey Hortorium, Ithaca, NY 14853 USA. DECAYS; SOFTAB We present measurements of the inclusive production cross sections of the Upsilon(1S) bottomonium state in p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV. Using the Upsilon(1S)->mu(+)mu(-) decay mode for a data sample of 159 +/- 10 pb(-1) collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we determine the differential cross sections as a function of the Upsilon(1S) transverse momentum for three ranges of the Upsilon(1S) rapidity: 0 K(+)K(-)pi(+)pi(-). We measure: Gamma(D-0 -> K(+)K(-)pi(+)pi(-))/Gamma(D-0 -> K(-)pi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.0295 +/- 0.0011 +/- 0.0008. An amplitude analysis has been performed in order to determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant components are the decays D-0 -> K-1(1270)K-+(-), D-0 -> K-1(1400)K-+(-) and D-0 -> p(770)(0)phi(1020). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. CollaborationTI Measurement of the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime in the decay Lambda(0)(b)-> J/psi Lambda(0) with the D0 detectorSO PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERSLA EnglishDT ArticleID BEAUTY HADRONSAB We present measurements of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime in the exclusive decay channel Lambda(b)(0)-> J/psi Lambda(0), with J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-) and Lambda(0)-> p pi(-), the B-0 lifetime in the decay B-0-> J/psi K-S(0) with J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-) and K-S(0)->pi(+)pi(-), and the ratio of these lifetimes. The analysis is based on approximately 250 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The Lambda(b)(0) lifetime is determined to be tau(Lambda(b)(0))=1.22(-0.18)(+0.22)(stat)+/- 0.04(syst) ps, the B-0 lifetime tau(B-0)=1.40(-) (+0.11)(0.10)(stat)+/- 0.03(syst) ps, and the ratio tau(Lambda(b)(0))/tau(B-0)=0.87(-) (+0.17)(0.14)(stat)+/- 0.03(syst). In contrast with previous measurements using semileptonic decays, this is the first determination of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime based on a fully reconstructed decay channel.C1 Univ Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, DF, Argentina.
