eThe Global Positioning System/GPS is aconstellation of 24 well-spaced satellites that orbit

the Earth 11,000 miles and make it possible forpeople with ground receivers to pinpoint their

geographic location.

History:

y Originally established by the U.S. Department ofDefense , the first GPS satellite was launched in 1978.

y The first 10 satellites (1978~1984) were called Block I.

y President Ronald Reagan declassified the GPS system

y

From 1989 to 1993, 23 production satellites, called BlockII were launched.

y The launch of the 24th satellite in 1994 completed thesystem.

y Korean Airline flight 007 got lost over Soviet territoryand was shot down by Soviet fighters.

How GPS System Works:

y The operational control segment (OCS) maintains thesatellites & tracks in space. The OCS monitors satellitehealth and signal integrity and maintains the orbitalconfiguration of the satellites.

Lastly, the user receiver equipment performs thenavigation, timing or other related functions (e.g.surveying).

y The satellites in orbit provide the ranging signals anddata messages to the user equipment.
