Customs chieffavors continuedbroker regulation

United States Customs CommissionerWilliam von Raab has announced thathe has decided to pursue continuedlicensing and adoption of more mean-ingful and stringent statutory andregulatory control of the Customsbrokerage community.

Commissioner von Raab’s decisionwas made on the basis of recommenda-tions issued by a task force that heestablished to examine Customs’ roleand relationship with the importingcommunity.

The task force, established in October1981, examined industry self-regulationand deregulatory options (includingdelicensing) and concluded that basedon the opinion of most regional andassistant commissioners and the viewsexpressed by the majority of the brokersand brokers’ associations in eight majorcities, continued licensing and regula-tion is the preferred option.

In what may be maritime history, Bay Houston Towing Company christened the four newestmembers of tbe fleet all on the same day. Left to right. The Captain W.D. Haden. the WD.Haden, 11, the Barbara H. Neuhaus and the Mark K.

AFAMILY AFFAIR.

The biggest harbor towingcompany on the Texas Gulf Coastis no faceless corporation. It’sBay-Houston Towing. And it’sowned and operated by theHadens, a family that has beeninvolved in the towing businessfor over 100 years.

That’s why their fleet of dieseltugs, all the way up to the 4,200-

horse-power Captain W.D. Haden,bears family names.

Doing the job better thananyone else can is more than achallenge.

It’s a family tradition.
