    In March 1908 he carried the first passenger in Europe, who was

    Henry Farman himself.

    He also took up the first woman to fly, Madame Peltier, in July 1908 at

    Milan. She took several lessons which culminated in piloting the

    Voisin solo, but she did not take her interest any further.

    Delagrange set several distance and endurance records during 1908. He was killed in

    a flying accident in 1910 which resulted from fitting too powerful a motor to his

    plane.

    In 1932, at his initiative, the Airlines Division of Tata

    Sons was started. Tata Airlines marked the birth of regularair transportation in the Indian subcontinent. The airline

    finally evolved into Air India, of which, after

    nationalization, Mr. J. R. D. Tata remained Chairman till

    1978. In 1938, the Directors of Tata Sons, all senior to

    him, elected him as the Chairman of the Tata Group - at

    that time, the largest industrial group of companies in

    India.

    Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: The Founder of the House of Tata

    Born in 1839, J.N. Tata is considered the Founder of The House of Tata. Mr.

    Tata was determined that India should have a steel plant that would

    compare to the best in the world. In the 1880's, the House of Tata formallyset out to play a vital role in the industrialization of India. Although Mr. Tata

    died in 1904, by 1907 The Tata Iron and Steel Company was established as

    India's first iron and steel plant, rolling out its first ingot of steel in 1912.

    Jehangir R. D. Tata: The Aviator

    "JRD" as he was affectionately known,was born in France and joined Tata Sons in 1925, eventually becoming its

    Chairman in 1938. With JRD's initiative and foresight, in 1932, the Airlines

    Division of Tata Sons was started. The airline later evolved into Air India.

    J.R.D. Tata played a critical role in increasing India's scientific, medical and

    artistic quotient.
