PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM JANUARY 5TH 2020

From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac For many people Christmas is over. Lots of folks have al-ready taken down the Christmas tree, lights and decora-tions until next year. Retail stores have cleared out the Christmas merchandise and filled their shelves with Valen-tine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day stuff. But our celebration of Christmas continues today with the Feast of the Epiphany. The word Epiphany means “manifestation or appearance.” Webster’s dictionary elaborates: “a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way; an intuitive grasp of reality through something simple and striking.” Something as simple as a child. Some-thing as striking as a star. The star of today’s gospel is liter-ally the star. It is the original GPS device, guiding the magi from the east toward Christ. In the Feast of the Epiphany we see all of these meanings come into play. It reveals that the Messiah was not just for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles. The stars and prophe-cies, signs from the heavens made by God and inspirations of the Holy Spirit, both point to a great king being born. The Three Magi themselves coming to pay homage to a new-born king is also an epiphany: it gives us insight into the deeper meaning of the Messiah for us. History is silent about just who or what the magi in the gos-pels really were. In some translations, they are astrologers, in others they are kings or wise men, and, we don’t know exactly how many of them there were. But because they brought three gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh – tradi-tion has held that there were three of them. The important thing to remember is that they didn’t come empty handed. The gospel tells us “They opened their treasures.” Like the magi, each of us has a treasure to offer Christ—and to offer the world. The prayerful question we should ask ourselves is: what is it? What do I have to give? Sometimes the best present is the gift of being present. Compassion is a treasure. So is time. So is solidarity with the suffering. So is prayer. No matter who we are, where we come from, or what we do: each of us has a treasure to offer. As we celebrate today Christ manifesting himself to the world, let’s take time to think of what that manifestation has meant to us. And let’s ask ourselves what I can give in return – to God, and to others. What are my treasures? What do I have to give? The Feast of the Epiphany signals to us that Christmas season is drawing to a close but that doesn’t mean the season of giving is coming to an end. Through our daily acts of charity and mercy, we are to be like that star that guided the Magi to Jesus. More people than we realize, people who live right beside us, are searching, and if we let our lives shine in Christ, we will help them, just as the star helped the Magi, to find true joy in the tiny child born in a lowly stable in Bethlehem.

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP

DECEMBER 22ND Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11 The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image of Stewardship that we should all try to follow each day. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be generous with eve-rything, but especially that one thing that means the most to you.

Thank you for your generosity

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN WHAT IS CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING?

Child sex trafficking occurs when a minor is in-volved in a commercial sex act where sex is traded for money, food, shelter, drugs or any-thing else of value. Perpetrators of sex traffick-ing often target children believing their age

makes them easier to manipulate and control. This crime is occurring in all types of communities throughout the U.S. and traffickers are making an alarming profit while victims endure abuse and violence. One of the most im-portant things you can do to protect your child is to create an environment in which he or she feels comfortable talk-ing with you as a trusted adult.
