PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM JANUARY 26TH 2020

From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac In a recent Apostolic Letter entitled “APERUIT ILLIS,” IN-STITUTING THE SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD (AI), Pope Francis declared this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time to be Sunday of the Word of God. I’d like to highlight three main points from the Pope’s letter. THE SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD In no. 3 of AI, Pope Francis declares that “the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God.” This will thus be a fitting part of that time of the year when we are encour-aged to strengthen our bonds with the Jewish people and to pray for Christian unity. In no. 8 we read: “A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a year-long event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers.” THE FUNDAMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BIBLE The Holy Bible is focused on the Word of God, Jesus Christ. The Pope underlines: “The Bible, as Sacred Scripture, speaks of Christ and proclaims him as the one who had to endure suffering and then enter into his glory (cf Lk 24:26). Apart from the Scriptures, his death and resurrection can-not be rightly understood (AI, 7). Pope Francis emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit: “Without the work of the Spirit, there would always be a risk of remaining limited to the written text alone. This would open the way to a fundamentalist reading, which needs to be avoided, lest we betray the inspired, dynamic and spiritual character of the sacred text” (AI, 9). The Pope reminds us of the link of Sacred Scriptures with Tradition: Scripture and Tradition together are the one source of Revelation. Before becoming a written text, sa-cred Scripture was handed down orally and kept alive by the faith of a people who acknowledged it as their own his-tory and source of their identity. Biblical faith, then, is based on the living word, not on a book” (AI, 11). READING THE BIBLE AND PRACTICING ITS TEACHINGS Reading the Bible devotedly will urge us to share the Word of God with others: “The sweetness of God’s word leads us to share it with all those whom we encounter in this life and to proclaim the sure hope that it contains” (cf 1 Pet 3:15-16)” (AI, 12). Practicing the teachings of the Bible en-tails above all loving God and all neighbors, principally the needy and poor. ” (AI, 13). Pope Francis encourages us: “May the Sunday of the Word of God help his people to grow in religious and intimate familiarity with the sacred Scriptures.”

YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

LEGION OF MARY COLUMBAN DRIVE Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Praesidium. The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who,

with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces, serve the Church and their neighbor on a voluntary basis in about 170 countries. The Legion of Mary will be available after each mass on Sunday, February 2, 2020. Please come for a visit to get to know them more.

MAYONNAISE SUNDAY is today! Hopefully the cold weather will subside and our brothers and sisters on the streets will survive. The Catholic Worker Com-munity does its best to feed, clothe and shelter the

homeless but they cannot fix the problem alone. We at Saint Cyril, through our prayers and material support, are a comfort to them and all who visit their Hospitality Kitchen. Envelopes are available at the church entrances for your contributions. Thank you for your generosity.

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK 2020 is next month! The Ca-thedral of Our Lady of the Angels and the Los Angeles chap-ter of the Order of Malta will host a special healing mass on Saturday, February 8th, at 12:30pm. It will include the anointing of the sick and the blessing of caregivers. Arch-bishop Jose Gomez will preside and Bishop Marc Trudeau will be the Homilist. Attendees will receive holy water from Lourdes and a commemorative prayer card. Please save the date.

SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD PAGE THREE

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP

JANUARY 19TH

“He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him.” Matthew 4:22 Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to follow Him in Stewardship. Not everyone is called to leave their business or family behind, but we are ex-pected to put God first in everything. Everything from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries and our treasure to support the financial needs of our parish mission.

Thank you for your generosity

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN EVALUATE RELATIONSHIPS BASED ON CONTEXT

We may think we know enough about appropri-ate boundaries in relationships, but boundaries are complicated, even for adults. Children rely on adults to define what is appropriate and what isn’t, in the context of the relationship. For

example, some touches are “safe” or “unsafe” depending on who is in the relationship — a parent, a stranger, a teacher, etc. For more information, get a copy of the VIR-TUS® article “Keeping in Touch with Important Distinc-tions” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx
