TRANSCRIPT
United Defense is transformingNavy land attack capabilities for new DD(X) ships with theresponsive 155-mm AdvancedGun System (AGS) and the highlylethal Long Range Land AttackProjectile (LRLAP).
The 155-mm AGS with LRLAPwill support U.S. Navy and MarineCorps expeditionary and jointoperations warfighters in thelittorals and deep inland. Precisionfires and flexible response willprovide the support required forasymmetric operations.
With DD(X) as part of a naval task force or as an independentexpeditionary strike force, AGS
will launch LRLAP at high velocityfrom over the horizon to prepareand shape the battlefield. AGS willbe capable of a maximum sustainedfiring rate of 10 rounds per minuteto deliver high-volume, 155-mmLRLAP fires at ranges of up to 100nautical miles. Each DD(X) canmass 140 to 160 projectiles in theair at once and direct multipleround simultaneous impact effectsagainst single or multiple targets.
The 155-mm LRLAP is a GPS /IMU-guided and rocket-assistedmunition capable of delivering aunitary high explosive warhead atextreme range.
The high-capacity, fully automated155-mm AGS and below-deckammunition handling and storagesystem allows an uninterrupted andsustained high-volume of fires. AGSprovides 24/7 precision strike forstandoff, covering and massed firesin any weather. Fully automatedammunition handling also supportsthe U.S. Navy’s goal to significantlyreduce overall crew requirements for DD(X) by eliminating personnelfrom the gun and ammunitionmagazine.

The United Defense DD(X)Armament Team is currentlydeveloping the transformational 155-mm AGS and LRLAP munitionunder the ongoing engineeringdevelopment model contract phase.
AGS Modeling and SimulationUnited Defense modeling and
simulation teams at our Minneapolisfacility generate rich visual imagery ofvirtual AGS components, subsystems,or the complete AGS assembly invirtual operation. These models allowexamination of real-time AGS controlsystem, mechanical and componentinteractions separately or as a fullyintegrated system - before the initiationof physical prototypes.
Applying rapid virtual prototypingto develop, test and refine AGS designin real time is allowing significantprogress toward meeting aggressivecost, performance, and schedule goalsset for the DD(X) program.
Demonstrated AGS CapabilitiesWhile virtual development of key
elements is moving forward, testing at other United Defense and AGSTeam facilities is demonstrating physicaland operational capabilities of AGSand LRLAP. United Defense-directedsubcontractors have alreadydemonstrated LRLAP concepts forsuitability of structural integrity, flightstability, navigation, guidance, andcontrol system characteristics. Testshave already demonstrated thepropulsion approach required toachieve the challenging range goal of 100 nautical miles.
In developing the LRLAP TacticalBaseline Design, United Defense andLockheed Martin tests will establishconfidence in meeting challengingperformance and reliability goals, andin addressing requirements directlyrelated to LRLAP fielding.
AGS System IntegrationDesign and analysis of 155-mm
AGS gun and magazine subsystems, components, and software areprogressing on schedule toward a 2005 system integration and test of the Engineering DevelopmentModel. Currently, key AGS componentand subassembly fabrications areproceeding on or ahead of schedule.
Building on a tradition of excellencein naval gun development, productionand support, United Defense and theDD(X) Team are rapidly transformingarmament development to provide the most operationally and cost-effective major caliber naval gun system ever deployed.
