After record entries in 2014 WE NEED YOUR ENTRIES to make it an even bigger and better show than last year! So if you have been ever tempted to have a go this is year to do so in our 150th Celebrations. Anyone can have a go by picking up a schedule with an entry form and entering as many classes in any division, in the Horticultural, Handicraft or Homecraft sections and a brand new class of making a Scarecrow is also included. Entries to reach the Hort. Show co-ordinator by the 12th JULY 2015. The fun of the show is having a go and showing people your creative side – you never know what you might win!

You can enter Vegetables, Garden Flowers, Soft Fruit, or have a go at Flower Arranging. There are Making and Baking classes along with some fantastic children’s classes for all ages and with their imagination making collages, vegetable animals and gardens in a seed tray. We are lucky to have some very talented Floral Art arrangers who produce stunning displays but we need more entries. The very creative can enter the Handicraft and the mouth watering Homecraft events which are very keenly contested.

So please spare some time and come over to the Village Hall where you can buy some lovely bedding plants, come in to the Village Hall and see the outstanding Show and then afterwards perhaps relax with some delicious tea and cake or something a bit stronger from the Byfleet Village Club whose doors will be open all day.

Horticultural, handicraft and homecraft schedules & entry forms are available in the Library, the Post Office/Goldings & Richard and Joanne’s florists.

They are also available on our website www.byfleetparishday.info

CHRISTIAN’S STORY – A BYFLEET FAMILY

7 1/2 years ago, 9 weeks early, a very special little boy came into this world fighting. Christian was a twin and we sadly discovered that his twin brother Joshua had died when attending a routine scan and, as a result, had to be delivered by emergency caesarean. Whilst we were devastated, Christian gave us strength by his sheer determination and he fought this way out of hospital after just 4 weeks and we all believed that all his hard battles would be over. Unfortunately at I8 months old Christian was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and his battles began all over again. Christian is unable to walk unaided and faces many challenges in his life, never complaining, and is an inspiration to all those around him.

His determination has allowed him to thrive in mainstream school. lt is rare you will see him without a smile and has a great sense of humour. He has fought many battles on his own in his life so far and has done so with sheer determination and support from his family. But he has now been given the opportunity to have an operation, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy which could allow him to walk unaided and improve his independence for the future.

The operation and intensive physiotherapy was pioneered in the United States, and is now available in the UK but has limited funding on the NHS. We have been told by his Specialist Consultant at Great Ormond Street that whilst he is an excellent candidate for this operation, and it will benefit him greatly, he will not receive funding due to the limited funds in the NHS. Whilst it is easy to question, and a great disappointment, why this funding is not available, we want Christian to have this life changing opportunity and wish to find any way possible to fund this for him, and to help our inspirational little boy have the very best chance of having a normal adult life. To this end we would ask you to help us to raise as much money as possible by either making personal donations or to undertake some activity and be sponsored. lf Companies, Schools or Colleges, or their staff wish to make donations we will try to get as much publicity as possible in appreciation and will, of course, keep everyone informed of progress. We know that Christian will himself be inspired by the generosity which people have already shown and please keep the messages on Facebook up to date with details of your sponsorship and messages of encouragement and support for this special and inspirational little boy.

What is Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR)? Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) was first developed in the United States, as techniques have advanced. It Is a neurosurgical procedure aimed at reducing spasticity (tight and stiff muscle tone) in the lower limbs. It is most commonly used for children with spastic diplegia (two limbs affected) which accounts for 25 to 30% of children born with cerebral palsy.

If you are able to donate, even the smallest sums will help so much.

Thank you so much – Christian’s parents Paul & Yvette Please make any donations via just giving www.Justgiving.Com/smileofinspiration

F ounded in 1996, Byfleet Heritage Society is interested in all aspects of the history of Byfleet, extending into West Byfleet and part of St George’s Hill. – all of which were part of the ancient parish of Byfleet.

The Society, the idea of the late Doug Bright, supported by the late Howard Cook and others, holds regular meetings and events. There are monthly (except August) talks on a wide range of topics of local interest, held in the St Mary’s Centre for the Community. On the first Saturday in each month, ‘drop-in’ mornings are held in the Society’s base, the Heritage Room at Byfleet Community Library, between 10.30am and 12.30pm. These sessions enable the Society to show items that are not normally on display, sometimes related to a particular theme.

The Heritage Room is also open free to visitors whenever Byfleet Community Library is open. It features a timeline showing how village events link chronologically to national events. There is a varied selection of display boards, featuring local buildings and events, and a display cabinet containing interesting artefacts.

Membership of the Society entitles members to attend all talks free of charge, and to receive a regular newsletter. In addition, an occasional Journal is published, again included in the membership fee. Visitors are welcome to the monthly talks for just £2 per visit.

For further details, including the events diary and membership details, see the Society’s website: www.ByfleetHeritage.org.uk

The Byfleet Heritage Society has been working on a project to identify, collate and record all of the known records of burials in St. Mary's Churchyard.

The Society was delighted to receive a grant from Surrey County Council to commission the development of an intereactive map and underlying database so that anyone interested may find the location of an individual's grave.

There have been around 3,000 burials in the churchyard, of which we have identified some 2,500 so far, the earliest of which dates to 1702.

Work will continue on this project and we would always be delighted to receive information to add to what is known.

PRS for Music licences the use of copyright music across the UK, giving businesses and organisations the legal permission they need to play the music they want. These licences ensure that music publishers, songwriters and composers are fairly rewarded with royalties so they can keep making music -

and mean that we’re able to support music at events like this.

For more information about PRS for Music or music licensing, visit www.prsformusic.com or call 0800 068 4828.

The organising committee of Byfleet Parish Day would like to thank PRS for Music for their continuing support of our event.

For more than a century, Brooklands has been associated with engineering and technological achievements of international importance in the fields of motor racing and aviation; for the last 25 years we have kept the spirit of the great pioneers alive in a vibrant, living Brooklands Museum.

We are now embarking on the next chapter of this extraordinary site’s history with the first stage of our Re-Engineering Brooklands masterplan. The £7.1m Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Race

Track Revival Project will celebrate Brooklands’ extraordinary role in aviation history, creating the Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed to tell the story of 80 years of aircraft design, testing and manufacture from AV Roe to Concorde. We will also open up the surviving section of the Finishing Straight of the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit once again, revealing for the first time since 1939 this most iconic part of motorsport history, where the chequered flag fell on the first British Grand Prix in 1926.

PARISH DAY CUPSince 1969 Byfleet and West Byfleet Bowls Clubs have competed for the Parish Day Cup annually. The competition was traditionally played on a Wednesday as part of the

Parish Day celebrations and remained a mid week fixture once Parish Day was moved to Saturday. As this year is the 150th anniversary of Parish day the match has been moved to Saturday to be part of the celebrations and the match starts at 2.30pm.

As it is a special occasion the President and Vice President of Surrey County Bowling Association will attend to present the cup to the winning club.

The bowling green is on the edge of the recreation ground and spectators will be warmly welcomed and hopefully some will become interested in becoming a member of either club.

If anyone wants more information on bowls, visit the website (www.byfleetbowlsclub.co.uk) or telephone Chris Hayfield (Byfleet) 01932 340068 or Gareth Jones (West Byfleet) 01932 342942.

MAUREEN ‘MO’ LAMING

I AM SURE MANY OF US HAVE SEEN THE LOLLIPOP LADY AT THE JUNCTION OF CHERTSEY ROAD AND KINGS HEAD LANE

SEEING THE CHILDREN OF BYFLEET PRIMARY SCHOOL SAFELY ACROSS THE BUSY ROAD, BUT NOT MANY PEOPLE

WILL KNOW THAT SHE HAS BEEN PROUDLY DOING THIS JOB FOR NEARLY 45 YEARS AND WILL BE 82 YEARS OLD IN

DECEMBER!

DURING THIS TIME SHE HAS CROSSED HER OWN CHILDREN, GRAND CHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL AS MANY GENERATIONS OF BYFLEET FAMILIES. IT WAS BACK IN

SEPTEMBER 1970 WHEN EDWARD HEATH WAS PRIME MINISTER AND ELVIS PRESLEY’S ‘THE WONDER OF YOU’

HAD JUST BEEN KNOCKED OFF OF NUMBER 1 SPOT WHEN THE HEADMISTRESS OF THE KING’S HEAD LANE SCHOOL

ASKED HER ABOUT THE CROSSING JOB, SHE KNEW MO WAS LOOKING FOR PART TIME WORK AND SHE HAS BEEN THERE

EVER SINCE.

MO, WHO LIVES IN OYSTER LANE, WAS ASKED WHAT KEEPS HER GOING THROUGH WIND, RAIN AND SNOW SHE WAS

QUICK TO REPLY ‘IT IS THE CHILDREN, I LOVE SEEING THEIR LITTLE FACES SO HAPPY’ SHE ALSO SAID THAT ‘THERE WILL

BE ONLY ONE WAY THAT I WILL LEAVE THE CROSSING AND THAT IS IN MY BOX’

LET US HOPE THAT IS MANY MORE YEARS AWAY –

Byfleet Parish Day

On June 1st 1865, to commemorate substantial

alterations and improvements to St Mary’s Church,

a dedication festival was held. The whole Parish

was entertained to lunch on the lawns of West

Hall which was then occupied by Mr R Murray. It

continued on it’s true anniversary until 1885 and

was called the Dedication Festival or occasionally

the Parish Festival. It was quite separate from the

flower show which was held every year in the

grounds of Petersham Place.

The earliest written record of the event is in a

Parish magazine of 1879 which invited parishioners

to assemble at the church and afterwards at the

Rectory. Tickets were distributed at the church

service. From 1885 onwards it was held on various

days in July and the words Parish Day first

appeared. It consisted of early Communion at 7.30,

Evensong at 3.00 and then a procession from the

church to the rectory fields. Tea was provided for

the over 60’s and school children, after tea school

prizes were distributed.

In 1888 Parish Day became more of a festival and

included a flower show, sports, dancing a fair and

a band. The school prizes were distributed the

morning before. In 1890 there were fireworks as

well and it was held in Pipers Hill meadow, in 1892

there was an addition of a cycle race through West

Hall and in following years a bicycle procession

in fancy dress. From 1899 it was held in the new

recreation ground and in 1902 combined with

Coronation Day. there was a free dinner attended

by 564 and a free tea for 1,202 parishioners

In 1909 and 1910 it was held in Bone’s field in

Chertsey Road and for the first time a fee was

charged of 6d for all except school children and the

over 60’s.

There are very few

records after this date

until after the Second

World War when it was

re-instated. The two

World Wars stopped

Parish Day and a revival

after the Second World

War was in doubt for

two reasons, firstly life

had in changed Britain

and Byfleet and it was

thought there was no

longer any need for free

tea and dinners, some

felt that Parish Day would not be what it was and

should not be revived. The other was financial as

the reserve from 1939 was only £150 but with the

help of fundraising jumble sales Parish Day was

restarted on July 16th 1952.

The areas major employer was Vickers Ltd (later

BAC) based on the east side of Brooklands and

they became involved later events included a

junior fishing competition, a cycle race, Dog show,

Horticultural Show and a bowls match between

Byfleet and West Byfleet. The Vickers support

was strong for many years until the factory closed,

indeed former Managing Director, the aviation

pioneer Sir George Edwards was a West Byfleet

resident and held Byfleet Parish Day dear and

he encouraged the company to participate. On

one occasion a member of his publicity staff

was hauled over the coals for not supplying an

adequate model aircraft display. Sir George was

not impressed by the excuse that he and the

department had been flat out preparing for the

forthcoming Farnborough Air Show. ‘Byfleet is far

more important,’ he said.

He invited personalities to open the day and the

opening ceremony has been carried out by many

distinguished people including Sir Barnes Wallis,

Douglas Bader, Robin Knox-Johnson and Cliff

Michelmore. This task is now ably carried out by

the Mayor of Woking supported by the Parish Day

King, Queen, Prince and Princess.

Prior to 1980 the event was held on a Wednesday

and the children were given a day off school so

that they could participate in the races. The day

was changed to a Saturday so that fathers could

join in. It was held alternatively at Byfleet and West

Byfleet Recreation Grounds with free buses laid on.

In recent years it has reverted to Byfleet village.

In 2010 the day

was in danger

of not going

ahead, the Parish

Day Committee

had dwindled

in numbers

and more and

more work was

being placed

in the hands of

fewer and fewer

hard working

people. Notices

were placed around the village requesting help

to keep the day going and a new committee was

formed from a broad spectrum of residents who

came forward and some existing members. A

sharp learning curve meant that there were some

anxious committee members on the day but 2010

turned out, with the help of some good weather, to

be a great success.

Byfleet Parish Day

We hope you will attend this year, ‘Community

Spirit’ is a much used phrase these days but in

Byfleet it certainly seems to be back in vogue.

Fantastic support from local businesses at a time

when many are feeling the pinch, we have lost

count of the donations and have been staggered

by what they have done for Byfleet. Wonderful

attendances at

last year’s event,

at the Christmas

Fayre in the

Village Hall, the

switching on of

the Christmas

Lights on the

Village Green and

the Village Hall.

It seems that if

you do bother to

provide things for

Byfleet residents

and businesses

and you let them know then the support is there.

On another page of this magazine there is a list of

people who have supported us again this year.

If you would like to help, even for an hour, at

next years Parish Day then you can find contact

numbers elsewhere in the programme. The same

numbers apply if you have any memories or old

programmes and memorabilia that you would like

to share.

If anyone has any information or memories on the

cycle races that used to take place on Parish Day

then I would be pleased to hear from you.

Here's to the next 150 years!

With thanks.

The Association is now in its 87th year, having been founded at a local residents meeting held in Byfleet Village Hall on 4th December

1928. From the outset it was decided that the Association should represent all three villages and that has remained the same to this day. If you study a copy of Howard Cooks History of the Residents’ Association (1928-1975) you will see that the committee and its supporters have played an active lobbying role and campaigning force on many local issues, ranging from aircraft noise at Brooklands, the spread of golf courses, road congestion, the alignment of the M25 and noise prevention, green belt encroachment, large scale housing development and many others over the years.

Today the Byfleet, West Byfleet and Pyrford Residents’ Association (RA) represents more than 2700 of the 7400+ households in the Three Villages. Our committee meets monthly to discuss a wide range of topics that are of interest to the local community. Your local councillors attend regularly. We act as both a pressure group and local information network on many issues, including planning applications, road safety, parking, vandalism and public rights of way. Most recently our attention has been focused on the potential loss of green belt in all three village areas, the future of Sheer House and the Broadoaks site in West Byfleet and the disastrous impact of flooding on Byfleet in particular. We have been instrumental in the creation of Neighbourhood Forums for each Village. RA grants helped each forum to get established and now all three have a growing membership and are making excellent progress towards

completion of their Neighbourhood Plans. The aftermath of the recent floods has seen the creation of a Flood Forum, which with RA help, is bringing together local residents and the various public authorities who are responsible for maintaining and improving our rivers and streams. We take a keen interest in preserving the network of public rights of way that criss-cross the area. The RA also provides grants to worthy causes, such as local community groups and we have made grants, typically of £500, to many such organisations over the last few years.

We have a network of around 160 Street Representatives who help ‘spread the word’ on local news and most importantly, deliver our newsletter - The Resident, which is published three times a year. The newsletter contains information on the work of the committee as well as many interesting articles provided by local members of the community. We are very grateful to the many businesses who, through placing adverts, help fund the production of the newsletter.

Getting involved as a member of the RA brings many benefits – being better informed on local issues, having a route through which you can lobby your local councillors, help influence opinions on planning policy, develop a better community spirit, get to know others in the Three Villages community and receive the newsletter three times a year!

Should you wish to join then come and find us at this summer’s local events and fetes or contact the membership secretary at: [email protected].

HAWKER AIRCRAFT DESIGNER

SIR SYDNEY CAMM, CBE (1914-1918)

This year's 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain reminds us of the Royal Air Force’s crucial victory over the Luftwaffe in 1940 and also sees further recognition of the leading role played at the time by the Hawker Hurricane fighter and the vital Hawker aircraft factories at Brooklands and Kingston on Thames in Surrey as well as by related factories elsewhere.

While much has now been written about both the Battle of Britain and the Hurricane, events in 1940 might have been very different without the pre-war work of the Hawker Aircraft company - especially its talented design team led by legendary Chief Designer Sydney Camm who lived in West Byfleet for more than a decade at the start of his aviation career.

Sydney Camm was born on 5th August 1893 in a Victorian terraced house at 10, Alma Road in Windsor, the first of twelve children born to Frederick and Mary Camm. He left school aged 14 to become an apprentice carpenter/joiner, yet outside work he developed a consuming interest in aeroplanes. Clearly inspired by early aviators at Brooklands, in 1912 Camm

co-founded the Windsor Model Aeroplane Club (WMAC) which

soon began to build a full-size aeroplane. When World War One started two years later, he joined one of Britain’s leading aircraft firms, the Martin & Handasyde Aviation Company at Brooklands, initially as a carpenter.

On Christmas Day 1915, Camm married Hilda Rose Starnes in Wooburn, Bucks. Hilda was the sister of a fellow WMAC member and the marriage certificate described Camm as an ‘aeroplane mechanic’. To be nearer his Brooklands workplace, the newly-wed couple moved into 18A Birchwood Avenue in West Byfleet.

In March 1915 Martin & Handasyde was renamed Martinsyde Ltd and towards the end of the war, Camm was promoted to the Drawing Office of the company's major new factory in Maybury, Woking, where he helped to design the Martinsyde F.4 - one of the fastest combat aircraft of WW1. Camm’s career continued to flourish after the war despite a severe contraction of the aircraft industry. He had a book published in 1919 titled ‘Aeroplane

Construction’ and when Martinsyde entered receivership in 1920, he was one of the few staff retained by the Receiver until recruited as a draughtsman by the new Handasyde Aircraft Company in Woking.

At Handasyde’s, Camm first gained recognition for his aircraft design work but when that firm closed down in 1923, he joined Tom Sopwith's and Fred Sigrist’s new H G Hawker Engineering Ltd company in Canbury Park Road, Kingston and soon became Senior Assistant to Chief Designer, W G Carter. His next breakthrough came in 1924 when made solely responsible for designing the Hawker Cygnet biplane for a light aeroplane competition and, when Carter resigned that November, 31 year old Camm was soon promoted to Chief Designer.

By mid-October 1927, Sydney and Hilda Camm had moved from West Byfleet to live at 'Firle' in Sugden Road, Long Ditton to be nearer Hawker's Kingston factory. Now in charge of a Drawing Office employing 70 people by the early 1930s and having first redesigned the existing Horsley bomber with all-metal construction, Camm and his team then produced the elegant new Hawker Hart which was first flown at Brooklands in 1928. From then on, the Hawker company’s fortunes improved dramatically as did Camm’s reputation. With the new Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine and a top speed of 185mph, the Hart was ordered in quantity for the Royal Air Force and led to a wide range of derivatives, most notably the single-seat Fury which became the RAF’s first 200mph fighter. This family of classic biplanes remained in production at Kingston and with subcontractors elsewhere (including Vickers at Brooklands) until 1938 after more than 3,000 had been made.

By late 1933, Camm and his design team were considering a new monoplane successor for their biplanes and significantly, Hawker Engineering became Hawker Aircraft Ltd and a public company that same year. Based on the technical and commercial success of Camm’s ‘beautiful biplanes’, the company quickly developed into larger Hawker Siddeley Group with Tom Sopwith at the helm and, as a new threat appeared in the form of Nazi Germany, Hawker Aircraft was well-placed to meet the challenges ahead.

In mid-1935 Camm became a Director of Hawker Aircraft Ltd in recognition of his part in its commercial success and the new monoplane fighter was now almost complete. Soon to be named the Hurricane, its historic first flight took place at Brooklands with Chief Test Pilot P W S ‘George’ Bulman on 6th November 1935 and, after early flight testing ended successfully the following Spring, the Hawker Directors agreed to put the Hurricane into mass production before any official orders were received. This crucial decision made all the difference to the fighter strength of the RAF at the start of the Battle of Britain in July 1940, by which time, two-thirds of RAF single-engined fighter squadrons were equipped with Hurricanes. These are believed to have shot down two out of three of all enemy aircraft destroyed in the Battle of Britain. Although the Hurricane was undoubtedly Camm’s most celebrated achievement with more than 14,500 being built, he went on to design the wartime Typhoon and Tempest fighter-bombers which played such an important role during the Allied invasion of Europe.

Post-war, Camm’s successful career continued and under his design leadership the Kingston team produced the Sea Fury, Sea Hawk, Hunter and Harrier. Official recognition of his work began in 1941 with his award of the CBE and in 1953 he received a Knighthood in the Coronation Honours List. He served as President of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) in 1954-55 and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the RAeS in 1961 - this being its highest honour.

In 1959, Camm was appointed Chief Engineer for Hawker Aircraft Ltd and when this company name finally disappeared in 1963, he became Hawker Siddeley Aviation Ltd's Director of Design and a Director of the parent Hawker Siddeley Group.

On 12th March 1966, Sir Sydney Camm died aged 72, after suffering a heart attack while playing golf in Richmond and he was later buried in Long Ditton Cemetery. On the 20th anniversary of his death, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead organised the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at his Windsor birthplace and Sydney Camm is now widely recognised as one of Britain’s best aircraft designers.

Today, Camm's chief legacy is the Hawker company's creation of some 27,000 aircraft ranging from the tiny Cygnet biplane of 1924 to the remarkable 1960s Harrier jump-jet and that the RAF has now had Camm-inspired aircraft on its strength since the Horsley entered service in 1927. Thanks to the recent offer of a £4.6M Heritage Lottery Fund grant, Brooklands Museum now will soon have a major new exhibition about the aircraft industry at Brooklands. This will not only feature a Hurricane restored to taxiable condition and examples of other significant Hawker aircraft, but will also pay tribute to Sydney Camm and many other local residents who contributed so much to British aviation.

IN THIS YEAR OF 150th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE HOW

BYFLEET PARISH DAY REFLECTED PREVIOUS EVENTS.

In 1935 the country celebrated the Silver Jubilee of King George V

shown on the cover with his wife Mary of Teck, the Queen Consort.

Notice that the celebrations continued on until 11.30pm!

Centenary Parish Day in 1965 was still held on a Wednesday, the Centenary Programme advised that the show would start with a Carnival Procession at 11.00am and was

scheduled to finish at 11.00pm! It included a Grand Athletics meeting, International

Athletics from 6.30 pm until dusk. Athletics prizes were presented by Joy Jordan

a Guildford & Godalming Athletic Club member who was briefly World Champion in

the women’s 800 metres and who finished 6th in the 1960 Olympic Games final in

Rome in the same event.

In 1953 Queen Elizabeth II was crowned following the death of her father George

VI in 1952. Odette Churchill was a Second World War heroine born in

Amiens France in 1912. She lived locally and died in 1995 being buried in

Walton on Thames.

In 1990 for the 125th anniversary the Parish Day was held in Byfleet after a period in which it was only held in West Byfleet. The event was organised by Byfleet Round Table, their caravan pictured was located on the south coast

at Selsey. It provided holidays for families who needed a break but were unable to

afford them, members of the Round Table drove them to there and back and was funded by their charitable activities.

1975 was the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, only the second British

monarch alongwith Queen Victoria to reach this milestone. Lord Beswick was a former Minister of State who was the first

Chairman of British Aerospace.

In 2001 the front of the programme was dedicated to Byfleet resident Elsie

Stranks who had died in May earlier that year, it was styled ‘Elsie’s Parish Day’.

Elsie was a unique person who worked tirelessly for the Village in various roles as Parish Councillor, Borough Councillor

and nearly every other village committee and organisation.

Many thanks to Byfleet Heritage Society, especially Tessa Westlake, for allowing us to reproduce the programmes. If you are interested in learning more about Byfleet Heritage Society, please email [email protected]
