T he future of the Andamooka and Marla health services is in doubt after their co-ordinating body recently announced it
would be reducing its operations in remote SA communities.
Australian charity Frontier Services, which is an agency of the National Assembly of the Uniting Church, currently runs local health and community support clinics at Andamooka and Marla.
e organisation also provides a range of support to other remote centres across the country, but is withdrawing from its health operations in SA.
Member for Giles Eddie Hughes told e Monitor he had since been in contact with Country Health SA and was searching for tenders to keep the Andamooka clinic going.
“It is important we continue to deliver services in places like Andamooka and Marla,” he said.
“We are hoping some services are willing to put in a bid so that someone will be able to continue to deliver services to these communities.”
Mr Hughes said he would continue to work as an advocate on behalf of the Andamooka and Marla health services.
He said he would stay in touch with Country Health SA to ensure a positive outcome.
Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said he would do all he could to help the communities aff ected by Frontier’s withdrawal from remote South Australia.
Mr Ramsey said he had already been in contact with Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison and asked him to investigate the matter.
e Monitor contacted Frontier Services but was yet to receive comment before its publication deadline.
Oz charity pulls plug on clinics
Egg-cellent turnout for reunion
Lyrik, Jo and Crystal Stowell were at Andamooka for the town’s 85-year reunion celebrations over the Easter long weekend.
Andamooka celebrated more than just Easter last weekend, when current and former
locals gathered for the town’s 85-year reunion.
Local woman Katalin Wilby said the four-day event was well attended, with visitors coming from far and wide to be part of it.
“It was a really good weekend,” she told e Monitor.
“Lots of people came back to town for it, so it was good to see so many old faces.”
About 100 people attended a wel-come barbecue on Friday, while the weekend’s other activities included a buff et dinner, market day, picnic lunch, morning tea and school tours.
Mrs Wilby said those returning to the town for the event said they enjoyed seeing the changes that had
occurred since they had left.“It is very important to hold these
kinds of events,” she said. “ e community has grown and there
has been a lot of change over the years, so it is good for them to come back and reconnect with some old faces.”
Current and former locals will now have to wait until 2020 for the next re-union as it is held every fi ve years.

Ro x b y D o w n s woman Rachel Young is one
of 16 regional artists attending professional d e v e l o p m e nt a n d networking workshops b e i n g h o s t e d b y Country Arts SA in Adelaide this week.
Ms Young is a jewellery artist who also produces sculpture, objects and public artwork.
She is joined by other successful participants from across the state – including Whyalla, Pe-nong, Mount Gambier and Mannum – in un-dertaking the Learning Connections Visual Arts Development Program.
Ms Young told The Monitor last week she was looking forward to the program as being a regional artist was often an isolating experience.
“I don’t even go out-side my front yard to go to work,” she said.
“If you’re living in a metropolitan area, there’s access to galleries and arts communities that you can have face-to-face contact with.
“I’ve got strong net-works, but I haven’t got faces to put to their names.”
e workshops are part of Adelaide City Coun-cil’s Emerging Curator Program, which aims to extend exhibition oppor-tunities for regional art-
ists by supporting profes-sional development and encouraging an exchange between metropolitan and regional artists and audiences.
As part of the appli-cation process, entrants were asked to nominate areas of interest to ensure the program was relevant to all those selected to participate.
The program began yesterday and will fi nish tomorrow, with activi-ties including a gallery tour and opportunities to meet gallery direc-tors, artists, curators and funding body represent-atives.
It will include the launch of Craft Anon-ymous at the Adelaide Town Hall, a new exhi-bition featuring both re-gional and metropolitan artists working in craft mediums.
e exhibition will in-clude the work of Louise Byrne, Cindy Durant and Robyn Finlay from the professional devel-opment program.

A small festival with big ambi-tions – promoting the Far North while also raising
awareness about the Australian fi lm industry and men’s health – was held for the second time last week.
The Queen of the Desert Festival (April 1-4) saw six teams dress them-selves and their vehicles up under the theme of diff erent Australian fi lms.
Teams were tasked with collecting funds for Blue September – a nation-wide awareness and fundraising initi-ative about all the cancers that aff ect men – and collectively raised about $8000.
ey were joined by Blue September ambassador Mark Holden in making the trip from Marree to Coober Pedy, stopping at towns including William Creek and Oodnadatta along the way.
Event manager Pat Katnich said she already had big plans for next year’s event, and hoped to arrange for Mark Holden to visit Roxby Downs and An-damooka before the festival began.
“I’m going to start working on that scenario now,” she said.
Ms Katnich said she was also seeking more sponsors and more teams to get involved.
“ e fi rst year was very much a trial run,” she said.
“ is year was the inaugural event. “We’ve created the platform, and
we’re now going back to the drawing board to see what went well.”

Drilling near OD An emerging international
uranium company is set to oversee a small
drilling program near Olympic Dam after acquiring a majority interest in the project.
Forte Energy has entered into a binding share sale agreement with Antares Mining Limited to acquire a 75 per cent interest in the Olympic Domain Project at a cash consideration of $300,000.
The project is comprised of nine exploration licences cover-ing 2162 sq km at locations near
the Olympic Dam and Carra-pateena iron-oxide copper-gold deposits.
In a recent statement, Forte advised it would provide 100 per cent of funding for the project “until such time as a decision to mine is made”.
“Previous exploration con-ducted on the licences identifi ed several targets for further surveys and drilling,” the statement reads.
“ e company intends to put together a small drilling program to test these targets, and looks
forward to providing further in-formation to shareholders in due course.”
Under the agreement, Forte will acquire 75 per cent of the share capital of Copper Range Pty Ltd (currently 100 per cent owned by Antares), with Antares to retain a 25 per cent interest.
Forte has also secured addi-tional funding for acquisitions and working capital from Darwin Strategic Limited in the form of a convertible loan instrument of about $1.9 million.

EDITORIALBy Ryneisha BollardWorld Autism Awareness Day was
celebrated last ursday, April 2.Just one day later, an autistic
11-year-old boy, Luke Shambrook, went missing at the Candlebark camping ground, near Lake Eildon in north east Victoria.
He was fortunately found alive and reunited with his family on Tuesday.
In what could be considered a silver lining on an otherwise horrifi c situa-tion for Luke’s family to have been in, the media reporting on his disappear-ance has provided an opportunity to examine the complexities of autism
and the extent to which it aff ects a child’s behaviour.
Media reports highlighted that, as a result of his autism, Luke enjoyed hid-ing and had a fascination with water.
He was also described by his fam-ily as having a “high pain threshold”, which was attributed to an increased likelihood of him surviving despite the cold nights on his own.
It was inspiring to hear about the dozens of holidaymakers who volun-teered in the search eff ort.
America’s National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (ND-MEC) reports that nearly half of children with autism will wander, or elope, from safe environments.
e NCMEC also claims more than one-third of children who wander are considered ‘non-verbal’.
“Finding and safely recovering a missing child with autism therefore presents unique and diffi cult chal-lenges for families, law enforcement, fi rst responders and search teams.
“Children with autism go missing under a variety of circumstances.
“They may seek out small or en-closed spaces.
“ ey may wander toward places of special interest to them.
“Or they may try to escape over-whelming stimuli such as sights, sounds, surroundings or activities of others...
“When a child with autism goes missing, it is important to quickly identify any unique interests the child has and create a list of their favorite places.
“First responders should talk to an-yone who knows the child well to ask for information about any interests, stimulations or obsessions the child may have.
“ is information could provide key clues leading to a safe recovery.”
An estimated one in 100 people have autism in this country.
at’s almost 230,000 Australians. We could be serving our commmu-
nity better by further educating our-selves about this unique condition.

The Roxby Downs Country Fire Service (CFS) is reminding locals that bans
may still apply, despite the official danger season for the North West Pastoral district ending last week.
“Just because the fire danger season is over, it is not time to become complacent,” said Roxby Downs CFS captain Brett Atkins.
“People still need to check on hot days if a fi re ban is in place.”
Mr Atkins said his station had responded to 20 callouts during the season, which began on No-vember 1 last year and ended on Tuesday, March 31.
“ e season was better than the
last, and conditions were similar,” he said.
Mr Atkins said incidents had included grass and house fi res – with blazes varying in severity de-pending on their fuel types – along with the Sampson Flat bushfi res.
“Four people from Roxby at-tended the Sampson Flat fire over seven days,” he said. “ ey attended to extinguish spot fi res and protect structures that were under attack from embers.”
Mr Atkins said about 40 fi re-fi ghters and 10 cadets (ages rang-ing from 11 to 16 years) were cur-rently based at the Roxby Downs station, including seven newcom-ers since October.
For more information about the CFS and fi re bans, visit: www.cfs.org.au
About 1700 Roxby Downs homes are a step closer to joining the National Broadband Network (NBN), with works scheduled to
begin next year. e Roxby Downs premises are among 36,000 in
the Grey electorate set to benefi t when fi xed line is installed.
Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said last week’s announcement of the works was an important mile-stone for the relevant towns.
Mr Ramsey said the fi xed line would provide greater certainty for homes as businesses seeking fast broad-band services.
“ e NBN will deliver internet access that’s fast, reliable and aff ordable,” he said. “Better broadband will transform the way homes and businesses com-municate, do business and access online services.
“Additionally I am pleased to advise people who are reliant on a satellite service that the NBN satellites will be operational in the fi rst half of 2016, off ering greatly improved reliability and speeds.”
e NBN has expanded in the past year and cur-rently includes 921,000 premises – up from the 345,000 reached before the Federal Election.
More than 300,000 premises, up from 47,000, are connected the fi xed line network, and 34,000 premis-es, up from 2000, are connected to the fi xed wireless network.
Federal Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull said these statistics showed the success of the rollout, which would make internet access more aff ordable for Australian consumers.
“I have said before that this is the most exciting time in human history to be alive because of all the op-portunities created by the digital revolution,” he said.
“ e arrival of the NBN will mean that those oppor-tunities will be extended to all Australians, regardless of where they live.”
For more information about the NBN rollout, visit: www.nbnco.com.au

Drivers behave over Easter
Roxby Downs police were patrolling the Stuart Highway area over the Easter long weekend, focusing on the ‘fatal
fi ve’ – speeding, inattention, seatbelts, dan-gerous drivers and drink/drug driving.
Senior Sergeant Terry Boylan said while po-lice issued a number of reports for speeding, drivers were mainly well behaved over the long weekend.
Looking out for break-ins
Following a number of incidents recently, Roxby Downs Police last week conducted marked and unmarked night patrols
targeting break-ins.Snr Sgt Boylan said offi cers were sent out on
foot and in police cars early last week until “the early hours of the morning”, but saw nothing suspicious.
However, Snr Sgt Boylan said the patrols would continue.

Local junior footballer John Secker has been named West Adelaide’s
under 16 captain for the 2015 season.
Secker has thrived since moving to West Adelaide at the end of last year, and is currently still trialling with the side’s under 18s.
“He came back to us in January/February, and some players, when they come back, drop their heads – but not Johnny,” under 16s coach Jason Fairall told e Monitor.
“He is very driven and mo-tivated, and has given it his all since being back.”
Fairall said Secker’s atti-tude on the training track had earned him the respect of his teammates and unanimous selection as captain.
Each player puts in a three-two-one vote on who they think should be captain, and Fairall said the coaching staff members were unsurprised with the decision to make Secker captain.
“He has good character,” he said.
“He’s been up with the under 18s, but when he comes back he shows great leadership and handles himself very well.
“We are rapt to have him.”
Fairall said West Adelaide’s Elite Development Program fostered success stories like Secker’s.
The program brings to-gether junior players as young as under 13s from West Adelaide country re-gions, which include Roxby Downs, for training camps and carnivals.
“They get to familiarise themselves with the sur-roundings at West Adelaide and the coaching staff from a young age,” Fairall said.
“So when they come back it is almost like home.”

Final countdown to FNFL season
WRITTEN BYPATRICK GLOVER
W ith the opening games just days away, Far North
Football League president Henr y Andr yszcz ak said locals could expect another exciting season.
One team will be playing under a new name (East Roxby) and a few clubs will be sporting new guernseys, and Andryszczak said these changes would make for a revitalised competition.
“I am very excited for the start of the season,” he said.
“East Roxby has changed its name and has a new coach, who is an ex-West-ern Bulldogs player, so they are a very diff erent looking team.
“Coober Pedy are looking good again, coming off their best season ever last year, and will be looking to make fi nals again.”
The Miners Cup will return to Adelaide Oval
on Sunday, May 24, and Andryszczak said he was thrilled to announce that a charity game would be played in Roxby Downs the week before.
e game will be between BHP Billiton Olympic Dam’s mine end and service oper-ators, with only workers aged over 35 years allowed to play.
e match will raise mon-ey towards sending junior footballers on a bus to see a Crows or Port Power game at Adelaide Oval.
“We created this game to cheer the place up a bit,” Andryszczak said.
“The place has been a bit down with Brian Par-tington’s passing, so we are looking to lift spirits.”
Andryszczak encouraged spectators to leave their dogs at home instead of bringing them to football matches this season, as the oval was looking “perfect” at the moment and could do without unnecessary mess and damage from pets.
I am very excited for the start of the season.

Roxby Districts Miners will be looking to make club history this season by winning their third
premiership in a row.Never before have the Miners won three
consecutive fl ags, and coach Ricky Prosser said he hoped his side could be the fi rst to do so.
“These kinds of chances don’t come around too often,” he said.
“We now have to put the past two behind us and concentrate on this year.”
Although the Miners lost some key play-ers from their side during the off season, Prosser said his squad had the depth to adapt to this change successfully.
Prosser said many of this year’s Miners had played a high number of games for the club, with nine or 10 having played 50 or more games and three or four having played more than 100 games.
He said keeping his players and his team together had contributed to their success.
“We have been training since December and have had good numbers throughout pre-season,” he said.
“We have lost a few key players, but I be-lieve our depth is just as good and we are about where we were last year.”
Prosser said the club’s structure had been kept the same, with the exception of inject-ing some youth into the leadership group.
He said last year’s other grand fi nalist, Hornridge, would be around the mark again, but he was keen to see the improve-ments Olympic Dam and East Roxby had made over the pre-season.

E a s t R o x b y , formerly known as Andamooka, is
hoping that a change of name, guernsey and coach over the off season will improve its on-fi eld fortunes.
After fi nishing at the bottom of the ladder last year without a win, new
coach and ex-Western Bulldogs player Cam Faulkner said he was pleased with what he has seen on the training track over the pre-sea-son and was looking forward to round one.
“I have trained with Andamooka for seven years, and this year I have felt and noticed a difference at training,” he said. “With the image change there has already
been more support, and there is some excitement around the start of the season. But while the name and the image has changed, the founda-tion and fundamentals of Andamooka will still be there.”
Faulkner said the club had maintained most of its players despite losing a few to Port Lincoln and Port Augusta.
However, he said the club had also seen play-ers return after hearing
about its name change.East Roxby will be
doing more than just making up the numbers this year, Faulkner said, and the men in blue and white are set to give a few teams a scare if they are around for the fi nals.
“From what I have seen at training, I do see the fi nals as a real possi-bility,” he said.
“I understand we are coming from a long way back and that we were the whipping post at
times last year, but it would not be an unreal-istic plan to make fi nals.
“ ere are some new guys at the club that I ha-ven’t seen a hell of a lot of yet, so we will see how the fi rst month goes.”
Faulkner said he was excited and expected big things both on and off the fi eld this season, with attempts being made to bring the football and netball clubs together to create a family-friendly environment.
H aving made the fi nals for just the second time in the club’s history last season, Coober
Pedy will be looking to push further than the fi rst week.
Saints coach Carmello Crisa said last year’s qualifying fi nal loss to Olympic Dam was bitter-sweet, and would serve as a driving force for the club this year.
“We’ve had a taste now,” he said.“ at was our second shot at fi nals,
and both times we have gone down in the fi rst week.
“It was bitter-sweet for the team, making fi nals but then losing in the fi rst round.
“But there now seems to be a sense of purpose.”
Crisa said the team needed to put in better performances on the road and
play good football – not just at home, but away at Roxby Downs as well.
e Saints have been putting in the hard yards at training, Crisa said, in a bid to increase their fi tness levels.
Coober Pedy should be going into the season full of confi dence after winning an indigenous carnival against teams from Port Augusta, APY Lands and Yalata – just to name a few.
“We have prepared the best we could with the carnival a couple of weeks ago,” Crisa said.
“We won the fi nal and it was an in-tense game, similar to what we expect on game days usually.”
Crisa said he was looking forward to putting his players to the test on home soil against Olympic Dam this Saturday.

D e spi te lo s ing s o m e o f i t s t a l l t i m b e r,
including last year’s Mail Medallist Tim Walsh, Olympic Dam is hoping its new and existing players are able to step up this season.
New Devils coach Ja-son Elliott was keeping a lid on things, but told e Monitor he was hap-py with the numbers the team had been getting to training.
“We are pumped for round one,” he said.
“We are just looking to build on last year and from that we’re hoping to see some improvement.
“We have lost a couple from last season – like Timothy Walsh, Jacob Langdon and Bryce Mummery – and have picked up some un-knowns.
“We will be hoping to see some better footy from a few of the exist-
ing players this season as well.”
Having played at the club for a number of years, Elliott said he was looking forward to his fi rst season in charge.
ere has also been a changing of the guard on the club’s committee, with Cameron Green stepping up to take over the president’s role from Michael Wedding.

N ew Hornridge coach Ashley Baxter said he would be using the hurt
of last year’s Far North Football League grand fi nal loss to drive him and his team this year.
Despite only trailing the Miners by three points at half time in last year’s decider, the Magpies went down by 50 points.
Baxter said he wanted to avoid the same thing happening this year.
“Definitely in my mind it is something that will be driving me,” he said.
“I am determined to go one better. A grand fi nal loss is always hurtful, and something I don’t want to go through again.”
Despite light numbers on the training track earlier in the pre-season, Baxter said players were beginning to come out more regularly.
e Magpies have lost a num-
ber of players to other clubs and other leagues, but Baxter said they had found newcomers to cover the loss.
Also changing this season is the club’s guernseys, which will still be black-and-white but will feature a new design.
Baxter said he was excited for the start of the season, and was ex-pecting a close competition this year.
“I have heard that OD have had good numbers on the training track,” he said.
“We train the same night as East Roxby, and they have been getting some good numbers to training, so they are going to be a lot more competitive this year.”
Baxter will be playing for Horn-ridge while also coaching for the fi rst time.
“It is going to be a challenge be-ing a player/coach, but I am excit-ed and keen to get into it,” he said.
“When I found out the job was available at the end of last year, I stuck up my hand straight away.”

Roxby Council was thrilled with the Roxby’s Alive and Kicking soccer event on
Saturday, March 28. e second of a three-event part-
nership with the Football Federation of South Australia (FFSA), the event was attended by around 550 adults and children, and supported by a hard-working team of Council and roxbylink staff as well as community organisations.
Council again provided the infra-structure for the event, including the electrical work, grounds set-up and preparation of the pitch – the quality of which was refl ected in very posi-tive feedback from the FFSA, as well as high standard of game and score-line between the Adelaide Comets and West Torrens Birkalla.
“ e pitch looked fantastic which was due to lots of work over the last 12 months by Shane Mills and his team to bring it up to a professional standard,” said Tony Weir, roxbylink centre operations manager.
“Our staff put in a huge effort throughout the week, beginning with the set-up from ursday through to Saturday, management during the event and pack-up later that evening.”
e event was a collaboration with the community, with Roxby Downs Rotary volunteers staffing the en-trance gate for the afternoon/night, food stalls provided by Roxby Scouts and St Barbara’s Parish School, face painting by Bree Butler and the ev-er-popular jumping castles by D&D Party Supplies.
“Bree made a signifi cant donation to the junior soccer association af-ter the event, which was hugely ap-preciated, and will be used to assist the Roxby under 16 team, which will be travelling to Barmera later in the
year,” Tony said. anks also to the Far North Foot-
ball League for lending their benches, stretchers and scoreboard numbers for the event; Graham Warren who emceed very capably throughout the evening, the St Barbara’s choir for singing the Australian anthem so beautifully and RoxFM for broad-casting throughout.
It was also great to see a large num-ber of local people, coached by Tony D’Arrigo, taking to the pitch during the junior games, Roxby vs Port Au-gusta under 16 match, and a hotly contested game between local Aus-sie Rules teams the OD Devils and Roxby Miners.
Once again the celebrity game was a hit with the spectators and players alike.
Roxby Council looks forward to hosting the third Roxby’s Alive and Kicking next year, and continuing to build on the success of the 2014 and 2015 events.
Th e R o x b y D o w n s Community Library will be open throughout the
upcoming school holidays, with activities planned for children of all ages.
A special activity program for children aged five to 12 years will be available on Tuesday and ursday afternoons from 2pm to 3pm, with the theme ‘Animals, Beetles and Bugs’.
Bookings are essential and can be made with the library staff by calling 8671 0500.
e library will also continue to hold Toddler Story Time on Wednesdays through the school holidays (9.30am in the library) for
children under fi ve – and although older siblings aren’t specifi cally ca-tered for, they are always welcome to come along.
Consistent opening hours e Roxby Downs Community
Library’s opening hours are now consistent across six days each week, opening at 9am each Mon-day to Saturday (excluding public holidays).
Changes have also been made to the Toddler Story Time repeat session held in the library on Wednesdays, which now starts at 9.30am (the same as the Tuesday session in the auditorium).
“ ese changes really are about bringing consistency to the tim-
ings to make it easier for commu-nity members to use our library and our services,” said library team leader Sarah Powell.
Don’t forget – the friendly staff are always available to talk to you about how the library can meet your needs.
There are so many services available such as free internet, a huge online cataloguing resource and the ‘one card’ program, which enables anyone with a South Aus-tralian library card to tap into ap-proximately 140 libraries around the state.
e library’s opening hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12 noon on Saturday.

The Multicultural Forum is seeking new members for the Forum, and now
is a great time to get involved. The Multicultural Forum
aims to increase awareness of our unique cultural diversity in Roxby Downs by co-ordi-nating events, programs and assistance to the community.
Recently the Forum held a Colourfest short fi lm festival and light supper to celebrate Harmony Day.
Other events and programs are celebrated throughout the year.
Nidya Iwan is the Commu-nity Board representative on the Multicultural Forum, and strongly believes the Forum is vital to our community.
She said: “As a multicultural town, the existence of the Multi-cultural Forum is paramount to provide opportunities for great-er community participation.
“It enables members of vari-ous culturally and linguistically diverse community groups to raise issues, learn a bit about each other’s uniqueness and
celebrate diff erences and simi-larities in the community.”
e Forum hosts the month-ly Mosaic Cuisines recipe and Mosaic Cultures columns in
e Monitor newspaper, along with the Mosaic Moments radio show.
The Forum is constantly striving to increase awareness
and cultural diversity within the Roxby Downs community, and over the past year organ-ised and hosted the successful 2014 World Food and Music Festival.
The 2014 World Food and Music Festival recently had the honour of receiving the South Australian Governor’s Multicultural Award for Arts and Culture in the organisation category.
With an award of this pres-tige, the Forum is proud of its achievements to date, and members will continue to strive to do what they do best.
The Forum welcomes any new members. Meetings are once per month and you can be involved as you want to.
The programs are flexible, and if you believe you can con-tribute your ideas in our mul-ticultural town, join us now and together we can increase awareness of cultural diversity.

Local photographer Charmayne Cronje has been donating her services to various causes over a number of years.
She was last week recognised for her eff orts with the Volunteer of the Month award for January at a Community Board meeting on Monday, March 30.
Ms Cronje has been living in Roxby Downs for eight years, and in that time has provided free photography for various community events, in-cluding a display at the town’s 25th birthday cel-ebrations.
She has also helped raise thousands of dollars – via photography session vouchers for raffl es and auctions – at local Biggest Morning Tea, Relay for Life and Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) fundraisers.
Ms Cronje said she was “surprised and very ex-cited” to receive her award last week.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said. “It actually feels a bit strange.
“You just do your little bit that you can for your town.
“To be awarded Volunteer of the Month is a re-ally nice thing, (but) you really don’t think about it when you volunteer.”
Ms Cronje said the Biggest Morning Tea and RFDS were causes close to her heart.
“I’ve lost a lot of family members to cancer, so I do anything I can to support the Cancer Council,” she said.
“(Also) everyone should support the RFDS as far as I’m concerned, because that’s our lifeline.
“ at is the quickest way to get us to Adelaide if we need major medical attention.”
Ms Cronje said it could be difficult juggling community involvement with caring for her two children, aged 9 and 13, but she did what she could.
“ e little bit I do is making a diff erence,” she

New beginnings formotocross club
After inviting the East Roxby Roos (formerly known as Andamooka Football Club) to utilise the facility over the past two seasons, we have now secured a long-term partnership.
The Roos have big plans for the facility, and with a new coach and fresh blood on the committee we are excited to be a part of their momentum in 2015.
We are continuing our plans and ideas towards our night meet, which was previously in doubt, but with some promising sponsorship support it appears to be back on track.
At this stage we are looking at dates in October, along with a potential two-day event incorporating the Port Augusta motocross club that would also be exciting.
It is shaping up to be a big year for some of our members as they embark on di erent racing dreams.
In the juniors we have young guns Ben Dixon, racing in the 50cc class; Bailey Anderson, who has just started racing this year on board a KTM 65cc; while Jazzy McDonald will also start racing competitively in the newly formed girls class.
Taj Gow-Smith will be keen to impress in his rst year under the Yamaha Junior Racing team, and in the seniors we have high hopes that local Kurt Murray can be right at the pointy end at this year’s Finke Desert Race.
Some of these riders have already begun to show their promise with positive results in the Prince of the Gulf meet last weekend in Port Pirie.
Aiden Way nished in sixth place and Ben Dixon was third in the division two 50cc class for seven to nine year-olds, while Bailey Anderson placed fth in the 65cc for the same age group.
Meanwhile Bodie Smith competed in two events, nishing fourth in the 128-150/200-250cc for 13 to 16 year-olds and 11th overall.
There are some exciting times ahead on and o the track, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for meetings and news.

B ill Natt and Lena Barrett are gain-ing momentum in their eff orts to get a little athletics club up and
running in Roxby Downs.Apart from the recent installation of a
new shot put area and long jump pit at the small oval, a visit from Little Athlet-ics South Australia to local schools and the kindergarten has been arranged for August.
“ e hard yards are yet to come, so we just need to keep the momentum going,” Natt told e Monitor.
“We have been getting some responses through Facebook, with people saying they are really interested, which is good.
“Little athletics is good for fl exibility and exercise, plus it’s not competitive. It’s about people having a crack and having a sausage afterwards.”
Natt encouraged locals to like the ‘Plan-ning for a Roxby Downs Little Athletic Club’ Facebook page as a way of expressing their interest in the project.
“We have had heaps of interest on Face-book,” Barrett said.
“I have also received heaps of texts from people saying they are keen.”
Natt said he was currently drawing up designs of how the little athletics program could be held on the town and/or school oval without clashing with other sports.
He said the proposed time was between 9am and 11am on a Saturday or Sunday.
A little athletics club has been attempted in Roxby Downs numerous times before, but Natt and Barrett said they were de-termined to be successful in their eff orts.
“We actually have a few people in town that have little athletics experience al-ready,” Natt said.
“Fiona (Hooper) and Lena have done it before, even though it wasn’t in Roxby Downs.
“Travis Hague is a good runner and tri-ple jumper, too.”
Natt said he and Barrett were looking to recruit as many children as possible, along with parents willing to help out.
“It needs a large input from parents and volunteers – it is not just a ‘drop and run’ thing,” he added.

N ew soccer goals have been installed on the Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) oval area to accommodate
a growing interest in the game. e new goals are bigger than the cur-
rent ones, are metal rather than plastic and are cemented into the ground to prevent damage.
“ e kids are really happy with the goals,” said Roxby Downs soccer co-ordinator Tony D’Arrigo.
“ e school benefi ts from them, too, be-cause they can use them at lunchtime.
“I have noticed kids who used to go and kick the ball around the football goal post
are now playing with the soccer goals.” While the new goals - located behind
the football posts at the school end of the oval - are larger than the ones currently in place, the pitch is still two metres off being the full size.
D’Arrigo said he appreciated the assis-tance of Shane Mills and Roxby in installing the goals.
“I would like to thank council for the work they have done with this,” he said.
“ ey see what people want and, if it is major and they see there is a need for it, they get it.”
e pitch is still being used for nine-a-side games for the older juniors and adults teams, but the larger goals and slightly larg-er pitch also allow for 11-a-side trainings to take place.
Roxby Downs’ fi rst country teams in 20 years are therefore able to use the oval to prepare for this year’s championships.
e under 12 and under 16 squads are currently training three nights each week in preparation for the carnival, to be held at Barmera on August 22-23.
“Most of the guys already play in the competition up here, but it is about get-ting them match fi t (for 11-a-side games),” D’Arrigo said.
“ ese are the fi rst teams from here to go in 20 years, so just being there for the kids will be a buzz.”
D’Arrigo said not only was soccer on the way up, but all sports in Roxby Downs were stronger than ever.
“All sports are 100 per cent positive at the moment,” he added.
t Barbara’s Parish School and Roxby Downs Area School students enjoyed success at the SAPSASA carnival in
Port Augusta last week.Competing in both football and netball,
RDAS a nd St Barbara’s came away the di-vision one and two football title winners respectively.
After winning their first two games against Flinders View and Port Augusta West, St Barbara’s students suff ered their fi rst and only loss of the carnival against Stirling North.
ey bounced back from this loss, defeat-ing Augusta Park in the semi-fi nal before going on to beat Wilsden Primary School 35 (5.5) to 8 (1.2).
In the netball, St Barbara’s division two team won three games and lost two to earn it a spot in the semi-fi nal, in which it lost to Quorn.
Meanwhile St Barbara’s division three team suff ered fi ve defeats from as many games.

F resh off their win in the fi nal round of the DYOVest Sidecar Grand Slam two weeks ago, local man Trent Headland and UK passenger Daz Whetstone fi nished
sixth in the national championships on the weekend. e pair competed against the country’s top performers in
the Australian Sidecar Speedway Championship.Headland said he and Whetstone were pleased with their
eff orts but were still chasing the number one spot. “We had so much fun racing at Arunga Park (in the North-
ern Territory) again on the weekend,” he said.“It was obvious that the committee had put in a lot of time
and eff ort on the track and the event as a whole.“ e country’s top teams really put on a show for the crowd,
and new Australian champ Justin Plaisted should be com-mended for how well he rode on the night and in the lead-up.
“Well done, mate.“We are now sixth in Australia – nothing to be sneezed at
– but we’ll forever be chasing that top spot.“ ank you so much as always to our generous supporters
and sponsors who take us here.”Plaisted and fellow South Australian Sam Harrison took
out the national championships ahead of Warren Monson and Matt Morgan, of Victoria, and SA duo Mick Headland and Jesse Headland.
Headland and Whetstone will now turn their attention to their fi nal race of the season at Westline Speedway, Whyalla, on Saturday, April 18.
