In the spring of 1897, Sherlock Holmes and I, Dr. Watson, were relaxing in the country. The vicar and Mortimer, his renter, came to us, pleading for help. (#1)

The vicar said, "Mortimer spent last evening at the house of his two brothers and of his sister Brenda. When he left, they were playing cards, in excellent health. This morning he was out for a stroll when the doctor stopped him. There was an urgent call to the home of Mortimer's family. When he arrived, his brothersand his sister were sitting exactly as he had left them. The cards were still in front of them. The candles had burned out. Brenda was stone-dead in her chair. Sherlock queried the victim's brother. Mortimer said that his family had come into some money. They fought about it, but they were now best friends. "It's devilish, Mr. Holmes, devilish!" cried Mortimer. "It is not of this world." (#4)

At the ill-omened house, Sherlock examined the room. The brothers already had been moved to an asylum. We viewed the body of the sister. There lingered upon her face an expression of horror. (#5)

Turning to me, Sherlock said, "Neither of us thinks this is of a diabolical nature. However, we have found no suspect for this crime." (#6)

The next morning the vicar arrived in a panic, "Mortimer has died, and the same way as the rest of his family!" (#7)

Sherlock sprang to his feet. "Hurry, hurry, to the scene!" (#8)

Upon arriving, we found the room was stuffy. A lamp stood smoking on the table. Beside it sat the dead Mortimer, his dark face twisted in terror like the others. (#9)

The moment Sherlock entered the apartment, he was tense and alert. He examined the entire premises like a hound drawing a cover. He scrutinized the lamp, scraping some ashes into an envelope. (#10)

Back in our cottage, Sherlock said, "This is odd. I know it was Mortimer who had thrown something into the fi re to poison his brothers and sister. Here is a second mystery, who killed the murderer? (#11)

Sterndale's face turned ashen gray. Then, he plucked a photo from his pocket. "That is why I have done it," he said. The lovely face in the photo was that of Miss Brenda. (#14)

"For years I have loved her. For years she has loved me. I could not marry her. I have a wife who left years ago, but the laws of England will not let me divorce her. For years Brenda and I waited." (#15)

Sterndale drew from his pocket a packet. The label read "Radix pedis diaboli." (#16)

"Devil's-foot root!" said Sherlock. (#17)

"Yes, it is a poison from Africa, unknown to Europeans," said Sterndale. (#18)

"Mr. Holmes, for Brenda's sake, I was friendly with the brothers. I knew about the quarrel over money, and I did not trust Mortimer. Then, one day, he came to my cottage. I showed him some things I brought from Africa. He saw this powder. (#19)

"When I heard the terrible news about my beloved Brenda and her brothers, I was sure that Mortimer stole the poison. He was the murderer! My soul cried out for revenge. I went to Mortimer. I lit the lamp and put the powder above it. In fi ve minutes he died. There is my story, Mr. Holmes." (#20)

Holmes sat for some little time in silence. "I have never loved, Watson, but if I did and if the woman I loved had met such an end, I might act even as our lawless lion-hunter has done. Who knows?" (#21)

Is the title really important? Yes! A good title makes people want to read the story.

Rule Capitalize the fi rst and last word in a title. Capitalize all the other words except for a, an, the, and short conjunctions and prepositions.

Grammar Rules

A sentence is a complete thought. Ex: I ate pizza for lunch today.A sentence fragment is not a complete thought. Ex: Pizza for lunch today.

A subject names the person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about. Ex: Kate swims fast. The pool is open every day.A simple subject is the main word in the complete subject. Ex: The singer of my favorite song performed at the concert.A compound subject is two or more subjects in one sentence that have the same verb. They are joined by a conjunction (and, but, or, yet, so). Ex: Sherlock and Watson looked for clues.

The predicate tells something about the subject. Ex: Kate swims fast. The pool is open every day.A simple predicate, or verb, is the main word or phrase. Ex: Kate swims fast.A verb phrase includes the main verb plus any helping, or auxiliary, verbs. Ex: The man is building a new shed.A compound verb is two or more verbs that have the same subject. These sentences support the topic sentence: He kept the country together during the Civil War. Lincoln freed millions of slaves. They tell why Lincoln was a great president.
