Camille Saint-Saens composed his Piano Concert No.5 in the town of Luxor on the banks of the Nile, integrating music traditions of the Middle East, Arabia and Java. Another metaphysical piece of music is the Sea Symphony, based on Walt Whitman’s poem Leaves of the Grass, and culminating in the “Passage of India”: The earth to be spann’d, connected by network,/ The races, neighbours, to marry and be given in marriage/ The oceans to be cross’d, the distant brought near, The lands to be welded together.
