Guatemala is a republic. The primary language is Spanish and twenty-one Mayan dialects are spoken. The country is about the size of the State of Virginia, and a little bigger than Ireland.
Guatemala is the next country south of Mexico and with a population of 14 million people, it is the second most densely populated country in Central America.
43% of children under five are malnourished. This is one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. More than half of the population is below the national poverty line and 15% live in extreme poverty (on less than $1 per day)
The number of homes without light is about 500,000. That's millions of people in the dark after sundown which happens at about 6pm.
