In September 1959 Julian “Cannonball” Adderley left Miles Davis’ band and established a quintet with his brother, which turned out to be much more successful than his first one! In November 1960, they set off for their first European tour as part of Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic; the Adderley quintet was assigned the task of opening the shows. Five months later, they took the stage as headliners during this 1961 performance!

Almost two years earlier to the day, the oscar Peterson Trio performed on the same stage (also a WDR Recording). And a large part of the audience, which had been present then, returned to the Gürzenich on April 27, 1963, remembering the sublime previous concert!

• This triumvirate, with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, is considered by many to be his best ever!

• Over the years, this line-up developed a level of unity, verve, drive and even perfection.

Sidney Bechet was a jazz pioneer and one of the great early improvisers. In the 1950s he recorded songs for three French films, remastered and collected here by the critically acclaimed Jazz On Film series!

• In 1955, Sidney Bechet was at the peak of his popularity. His concerts were constant sell-outs and his numerous records for Vogue were selling in quantities previously unheard of in the jazz world.

• Bechet starred in, and recorded music for, three French films: 1955’s Serie noire, a Pierre Gaspard-Huit melodrama directed by Pierre Foucaud; 1955’s Blues, a Jean Josipovici film; and 1956’s Ah Quelle Equipe! directed by Roland Quignon. Invaluable documents, they offer a wonderful illustration of a great jazz musician.

Grupo Andino performs traditional music of the Andes on the typical instruments: sikú, zampoña, quena, charanga, and bombo. With its vitality and authenticity, this is music with universal appeal. Andean music reflects the history and the successive cultures of that part of South America. The texts are generally related to Incan and Christian myths and beliefs. Native Indian music makes use of wind instruments (various panpipes, guana, rondador, pingullo, chirimia) and percussion (bomba and tinya). Spanish settlers brought with them new instruments — mostly strings (guitar, mandolin, violin) — that were soon adopted by the Indians.

This album presents some fine examples of Tuvan throat singing: fascinating music, easily accessible to our ears, that evokes the great-open spaces of this vast and little-known region. Over the centuries the Tuvans have developed various throat-singing techniques (known in Tuva as “khoomei”) that were traditionally used outdoors, with singers using their voices to mimic and interact with the sounds of the natural world. Circular breathing is used, thereby enabling them to sustain multiple notes for long periods of time.
