—Why retrofit?
March 20, 2018 Slide 11
Legacy generation traction equipment is 15-20 years old
Electric equipment
Spare part sourcing will be harder due to ageing and obsolescence of electrical equipment
Typically 8-16% less energy efficient than present technology
Decreased availability and increased maintenance costs due to increased complicated repair procedures and faults of aging equipment
Install the latest technology with Remote Diagnostic and Energy Storage to optimise the maintenance intervals, reduce downtimeand energy cost

Energy efficiency
Higher energy efficiency due to optimisedpulse pattern and circuit design, which gives energy savings up to ~8-16% ICE1 retrofit project measures 15.6% energy savings.
Modular system
Based on standard building blocks which makes the parts easy to replace or scale. Each module is water cooled to reduce footprint and boost efficiency.Air Cooled modules are also available
Tailor made
The ABB equipment can be tailor made for every train type, independent of previous traction supplier.

Diesel hybrid
Use the energy from regenerative brakingto charge battery.
The Battery can be used in parallel with the diesel engine as a booster to save fuel. Alternatively the battery can be used for auxiliary load at train platform to reduce noise.
Plug-in hybrid
Use the energy from regenerative brakingand a train platform plug-in solution to charge battery.
The Battery can be used in parallel with the diesel engine as a booster to save fuel. Alternative the battery can be used forauxiliary load at train platform to reduce noise.
Catenary free
Use the energy from regenerative brakingand a platform plug-in or catenary solution to charge battery.
The Battery can be used for traction and auxiliary load.

Replacement of diesel-hydraulic propulsion with a hybrid energy storage system
DB ECO-Train – Siemens Desiro
ABB replaced the old diesel-hydraulic system with a modern diesel engine and propulsion system. The propulsion system consists of new converters, energy storage, motors and transformer, and an energy management system to optimise the traction performance. ABB also supplied a plug-in solution for platform charging. ABB installed and integrated the new system together with the customer. The benefit was lower emissions and significantly lower energy consumption and life cycle cost
Operation modes:
– Diesel only
– Diesel + battery
At station:
– Plug-in
– Plug-in + battery
– Battery only
– Excess power used for charging
