Introduction
Hi, my name is Kaleen Lai, the author of 15 Effective Ways To
Turbocharge Your Confidence.
My reason for writing this ebook is to give you the ways to
turbocharge your confidence. Let me share my experience of having
low self-esteem, lack of confidence and being introvert. I have also
faced financial problems and had an unhappy marriage. During some
nights, I was staring at the stars, feeling disappointed and hopeless
pursuing my goals. Like everyone else, I make mistakes. But I did not
give up and kept chasing after my dreams.
This ebook is going to give you insights, habits and a second chance
to improve your life. I am ready to share my experience that greatly
increased my confidence. Do not give up, or miss any opportunity
around you. I will teach you how to view things in different
perspectives. Hope you can at least receive ONE takeaway at the end
of the book and APPLY it in your daily life.
How do I start with low self-esteem
I was born in a simple and humble family. I remember when I was
nine years old, I was staying in a one-room flat (the area about 30-40
square feet) with my family members. Eight of us including my
parents were living in the same place. We were happy staying
together day by day.
One day, my father was hit by a motorcyclist and passed away after
being hospitalised for two weeks. His sudden death had a big impact
on us because we lost our breadwinner. It was unforgettable memory

in my life. My mother was weeping daily. At that time, I couldn’t
know how to give a word of comfort to her. At night, I always hugged
her to sleep to make her feel better.
Since then, I constantly compared myself with others, felt worthless,
unhappy and depressed. I felt different from my classmates. Often,
my classmates liked to share about their family happy events, but I
usually talked less. I did not want anyone to notice me. Those could
be the reasons that were contributing to my low self-esteem.

Facing criticism and neglect
I could remember during my school years, I was very quiet, shy and
introverted. I have no confidence, partly due to my body size as my
weight was about 68kg. I often preferred to lower my head to avoid
teachers calling my name during lesson time. I lacked confidence, and
this had a negative effect on my social skills. Once, I was asked to
form groups with my friends, I could not find anyone to team up with

me. My teacher chose someone to partner with me. I noticed my
partner was reluctant, but she had to follow the teacher’s instruction.
At times, my classmates teased me by calling me “fatty ugly.” I felt
shameful, and hoped I could find a hole to hide.
I was upset and disliked going to school. I questioned myself why no
one was fond of me, I had a strong urge to slim down. I did not want
anyone to call me “fatty ugly” again. I was determined to eat less,
swim and jog regularly.
After exercising for a month, I stood in front of the mirror and looked
at myself. I discovered that I had slimmed. I felt happy and thought
that my classmate would not call me that again. But they still
disliked me and continued doing so. I could say I had miserable
memories of my school days.
A new beginning
After graduating from high school, I did not have much academic
success. But I had a new beginning and fled from those sullen days. I
got a job very soon after several interviews. I just wanted to start
making money to save more and also to help my mother lighten her
financial burden. I begin to see my future, my career, my dreams and
I met him.
We know each other from networking. When I first met him, his
sincerity toward me wasn’t like that of a friend. He was exactly my
ideal mate when I first dream to date men, and our dating started
from there. After five years of courtship, he proposed to me and
promised to give me a wonderful marriage life. My dream of
marriage life begins….

Making a change
In our first year, he changed his job from being a technician to a sales
executive, this badly affected our marriage life. He needed to go
entertaining every night and came home late. He seldom stayed at
home; I felt lonely every night around the four walls. I waited for him
till midnight, but he did not appreciate and scolded me. Sometimes, I
noticed him chatting with another woman in the midnight. Often, I
nagged at him to help settle the household bills. He rejected, giving
the reason that he needed to pay the bill while socializing with clients.
He started neglecting me, and we always quarrelled over financial
issues. I was very upset and suggested divorce.
After then, we discussed our problem and come to an agreement
before things got worst. He decided to quit his job, we sold our house
and moved to a small apartment. We took the money to start a small
business buying and selling garments. We opened a retail shop
located in a prominent area (Orchard Road in Singapore), paying a
monthly rental of $3,000. Actually, we took over our relative’s retail
shop, so that he could guide us on how to do this business. Initially,
the sales were good and we must travel overseas to buy stock quite
often. In my life, I was taught not to take too many risks, but this
opportunity changed my way of thinking. I did not agree with my
mother’s view to study hard and get a good job. This is not what I
wanted!
Over time, my life and business improved and we become more
confident. We decided to increase our stock. Great things often
happen one after another; I was pregnant with a baby girl. I was
pleased that our business become stable and that we could have a
complete family.

Global Financial Crisis
“Good times don’t last.” In 2008, the global economy was badly hit.
Our sales dropped tremendously and could not afford the monthly
rental. During that time, I could see some shops close down. Most of
our sales came from tourists and fewer people travelled at that time.
But we did not give up and instead did our best to save our business.
We hoped the crisis was just short term and that our sales were able
to pick up soon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t like what I thought. After
struggling for six months, there wasn’t any improvement on our sales,
and yet our debt grew bigger. Moreover, we could not afford to pay
the rental. Hence, we took this situation seriously. In the end, we
decided to close down our shop.
After that, we started to look for a job to settle our debt. Luckily, I
managed to get a job fast. However, my husband required some time
to adjust to the changes. Therefore, I helped to pay the debt and
household expenses first. Six months later, he managed to find a job
and I thought he could help me with the debts. But he told me that
this time he focused on big buyers and asked me to wait. He went to
socialize with friends and clients every night. I hated to quarrel with
him over money. Besides he also did not contribute much to our
daughter’s monthly expenses. I decided to make the best of a bad
bargain, and borrow the money from my friend. I sincerely thank my
friend from the bottom of my heart. After a period of time, I was
really tired of quarrelling over the same issue with him again and
again. And our marriage turned sour…..
Time flies…. I always looked for the meaning of life. I didn’t want to
feel hopeless. I was eager to find the solution; I hope to do something
about it to start a new life….

Only time can change a person
I remembered this day was Christmas day, I met up my best friend
and shared my problem with her and she advised me to read self-help
books. She told me this make her changed in her life and became an
optimistic person. At first, I had doubt that such book can make a
person changed. But this could be where my starting point, and
although I might take a long time to finish a book, I would like to try
and hopefully this could bring about positive energy to attract good
things and good news.
I stopped myself from thinking negatively. I started to read books
such as “Winning the Game of Life,” “101 Powerful Affirmation”,
“How to Win Friends and Influence People” and “Ultimate
Breakthrough”. I was inspired by other life stories which helped see
life in a different perspective. I have learned not to beat about the
bush. I applied the knowledge from these self-help books and
gradually, my social life improved, confidence increased and I started
looking on the bright side. As a result, I become more approachable
and I have more friends now.
As I wanted to achieve financial freedom as well; I started to search
for courses and seminars to attend, including investing in stocks. I
happened to attend a seminar about selling beauty products and
there I met my mentor. She is a makeup artist who teaches her skill
during events. In fact, I am also interested in learning something
related to beauty. To me, this was a good opportunity. I showed her
my positive attitude and enthusiasm to learn from her. She gave me
the chance to assist her and told me how to work in this industry. My
social skills improved, unlike previously, when I was always the
listener. I helped her to demonstrate and share the benefits of the

products in front of a group. From there, I learned how to express
myself better and it brought me extremely good sales.
It was so amazing finally being able to speak while standing in front
of so many people. I could not believe that such thing happened and
was possible. I was really grateful. I wanted to learn more things. One
of my dreams is to be a yoga instructor. And I have fulfilled my dream;
I obtained my yoga instructor certificate last year. I volunteer my
service to teach yoga and hope I could do more. If I can influence and
help others, the satisfaction is beyond words; it is my utmost pleasure
to do it. Now, I enjoy every moment of my life, I look better and
receive support and compliments from people around.

Are you ready? Now, let me share with you the ways and processes
that changed me. The changed helped me to turbocharge my
confidence. How nice if I could turn back time to learn all these
lessons earlier. Life is short, so you need to believe in your dreams.
You need to think positively to accomplish your dream. You need to
integrate these lesson and gradually they will gives you a concise and
firm message. It’s always not too late for you to make a change. Just
do it now…. Let’s start =D

1. Show yourself with confidence
I believe that when you are at home, you will dress down and behave
or sit in any posture you like. Your family members who have already
know you and able to accept your habits. Their impression of you
hardly changes. This applies to me too =)
Nevertheless, whenever you have an important appointment e.g. a
date with someone special, an interview, a speech to deliver or a
meeting with clients, I believe you will ensure that you look clean and
nice by putting an appropriate clothing. This way, you will definitely
feel great, increasing your confidence.
Whenever I was called in to help my mentor during events. I would
purposely dress up and give myself a makeover. I am sure that I will
do well because I am well prepared for it. At the same time, I feel my
confidence improved. I could speak steadily during the session. This is
how I deal with our clients and impress them.

Don’t underestimate this little bit of effort. It can create massive
result in your life in the long runs, such as bringing in more sales and
helping you make more friends.

2. Keep smiling and look at people in the eye
Do you notice people don’t smile enough these days? It seems as if
they need to be paid to smile! But do you agree that a smile will help
you build rapport with others? =) When you smile to someone, you
feel happy and confident. Whether others will return you a smile or
not, smiling won’t hurt you.
In an event when I was sharing the advantages of our products. I
maintained eye contact and gave a bright smile to show our clients
that I value them by asking questions. This was to express to them
ease and warmth. Eye contact is important especially when I was
communicating with clients. It implied I was paying attention and
listening to them. The clients would feel our sincerity and trust.
By giving a sweet smile =) and look at people in the eye at the same
time, your words will have great meaning. When the other party
means it, they will look at you in the eye. They could feel your
presence and closeness. This manner of interacting can improve the

communication and it becomes a natural process. Firstly, maintain
your face every day, thus leading to a good mood.

3. Give sincere compliments to others
Sometimes, if you can make an effort to give a compliment to others,
it shows that you feel good enough to give positive feedback. Express
your compliments in an honest and sincere way to show your genuine
attitude. Being observant to other’s good points shows that you view
things positively.
Usually, at the end of each lesson, we would give compliments to our
clients on their makeup progress. This was to acknowledge their
effort. A sincere compliment could help them boost their self-
confidence. They could practise more often and improve their skills.
From time to time, we received more compliments in return.
When you give a genuine compliment to others you ignite a spark of
happy feelings inside yourself. By giving a compliment on others’

good conduct, positive energy is exchanged.

4. Remember your past accomplishments
Take some time to reflect and recall about your past to see what
you’ve done throughout your life. Anything you did in the past that
makes you feel proud of, no matter how big the accomplishment is,
have you given yourself enough credit for it? Thinking about this will
help you recognize your value. You should believe in yourself that you
are capable of producing something incredible again.
List down all your accomplishments, recall all of them (big and small),
e.g learning how to cook, how to drive, make one successful sale,
getting to know a great friend, doing volunteer work and so on. All
things are possible, and remember to keep on updating your list.
My achievements include starting my first business, how I faced a
group of people, my first successful sales, I obtaining my yoga
instructor certificate, and so on. I recognized those were my
accomplishments, moving forward I will make more amazing things
happen!

Try to recall your past accomplishments as much as possible and this
will help to justify the value you bring to the people and society
around you and, also build up your self-confidence. Keep making lists
of your ideal future. The most amazing things in life tend to happen
at any moment.

5. Concentrate on positive thoughts. Always believe in
yourself
Our thoughts are often disturbed by self-doubt. Those negative
thoughts cause us to feel uncertain of our ability to get things done
and make decisions.
In order not to get bogged down by self-doubt and negative thoughts,
why not focus on “positive thought”? Every human is born with talent,
just like you and me. Everyone is worthy to be loved and respected.
So develop a belief in yourself and maintain faith and hope.
Recalling my past, everything to me was impossible then I was a
negative person. But I became desperate to change my life and told
myself “I CAN MAKE A CHANGE”….”I CAN” in my heart repeatedly
numerous times. Learn to say “I CAN”, the Universal will help you if
you make an effort by taking action.

Concentrate on the word “CAN” and trust yourself you can and will
be able to make it. Always give yourself credit whenever you make a
positive change or accomplishment a task. Keep focusing on the
bright side and carry on with your plan.

6. Understand yourself
Stand in front of the mirror and look at yourself. Then, ask yourself
this question “Do I understand myself well?” Once you know who you
are and what you stand for, you should have confidence in yourself.
But if you still doubt on who you are then you need to overcome your
doubt as your enemy is yourself. Challenge yourself to overcome it. If
you want to know yourself better, learn to listen to your own
thoughts.
For example before going for a badminton match, the player need to
study the opponent very well to win the game. So you need to
overcome negative thoughts in your mind and replace them with
confidence. Treat your opponent as yourself. Then you will get to
know yourself.

Learn to understand yourself by writing down your thoughts, and
understand why you come up with them. Also, write down about your
strengths and weakness. Study deeply about yourself to gain valuable
insights.

7. Keep acquiring new knowledge
There are no shortcuts to success. You need to face obstacles and
accept failures several times. All these enable you to expand your
horizons and develop your perspective of what is possible in life. One
of the best ways to empower yourself is to be open-minded and keep
learning. It can help you view experiences that you go through as
opportunities to develop your abilities. These are so many advanced
learning tools, such as the Internet, eBooks courses that you like to
keep you up-to-date with the latest advancements in the world.
As you notice, the most successful people in the world, such as Bill
Gates, Warren Buffett and Elon Musk are among those who
recognise the importance of lifelong learning although they come
from different backgrounds. They never stop learning and their
achievements greatly contribute to the world.
Therefore, learning is a never-ending process. Learn and apply
whatever you know and keep going. Investing in yourself and setting

the sky as your limit will be one of the best ways to turbocharge your
confidence.

8. Prepare yourself and act positively
Do you keep focusing on your shortcomings? If yes, you will lose your
confidence. By right you should make full use of your strengths to do
a task well. Challenge that feeling by preparing yourself be ready.
Example, if you need to give a speech, you might get nervous.
However, you will feel more relaxed if you have been practising
numerous times, recording your speed and listening until you develop
enough confidence. Once you are well-prepared, you will feel more
secure to make it. Do not underestimate your own abilities.
Whenever you have a plan, you need to execute it. Only taking action
allows you to see the outcome at the end. No action, no result. Before
an action is taken, your mindset needs to be positive so that you will
likely see good results. During the execution of the plan, you need to
be confident in yourself and act positively.

Do not engage in negative self-talk. As long as you have put in effort,
I believe you will see yourself improve.

9. Start setting effective goals and work to achieve them
We like to set goals, no matter big or small. The size of our goals
depends on our individual ability. Here is my goal to complete a 5km
run. It is big to me, but it might just be small goal to you. Despite the
size of your goal, most importantly, set some goals for you to take
the first step courageously. Once your life has a direction, follow
through and put in your best effort to achieve what you desire.
You may start with easy and effective goals to accomplish. Set goals
which can help you to identify milestones on the path towards
realising your goal. You will see progress while you are moving
towards fulfilling your dream. You will live meaningfully each day
pursuing your goal. Reward yourself whenever you have
accomplished each goal. This will help to increase your confidence, so
that you can set a bigger goal next time.
Remember, do not rush to fulfil every goal. Give yourself enough time
to accomplish every goal. As long as you keep moving towards it, you

can achieve whatever you want from life. It is a must to set a time
frame for yourself to accomplish your goal, to be able to motivate
yourself effectively.

10. Stop being a perfectionist
Perfection is neither possible nor necessary. We are human beings.
There is nothing wrong with imperfection. Nobody dares to say they
are perfect and nobody will ever be. When you do something, make
sure you do your best. If you make mistakes, do not give yourself
stress. You can learn from each mistakes as a wake-up call and view
it as an opportunity to spur you on in the near future.
When I just started learning yoga, I could not maintain some postures
because I thought I was not flexible. But in order to obtain my
instructor certificate, I encouraged and talked to myself positively. I
took action and practising bit by bit every day. Gradually, my
flexibility and posture improved. Although there are still some
postures not up to my expectation; I know my body limits and do not
want to overstretch or else it may lead to an injury. I am satisfied
with what I am now. My determination has carried me through the
difficulties.
If you seek to achieve perfection, you’ll never be happy with yourself
and the people surrounding you. Enjoy the learning journey and

experience. It is good to feel proud of what you have done instead of
expecting everything to be perfect. Do not let perfection stop from
moving forward. Do not let perfection affect your confidence as well.

11. Move a step outside your comfort zone and take risks
It is very natural that you like staying in your comfort zone. A comfort
zone is a place where activities and habits fit into your plan that it
minimizes stress and threat.
This is a common behaviour, but if you become lazy to take up
challenges, acquire knowledge, grow or try new things, you still stay
put in your comfort zone and it will tend to shrink. So push yourself to
expand it.
How should you expand your comfortable zone?
I believe you need to push and challenge yourself to take small risks
first. By stepping out of your comfort zone, your achievement will
reach new heights that you had never imagined. You will get greater
fulfilment and confidence. Consult people who can give you good
advice. My mentors and friends often give me good advice and share

useful connections or information with me. I realized I gradually grow
wiser after obtaining new knowledge.
Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You must try.
Otherwise, you won’t know what you are capable of achieving.

12. Be persistent and focus on solutions
Persistence can distinguish between those who succeed in life and
those who don’t. Be determined to achieve a goal regardless of any
setbacks. Persistence is the sign of confidence and the most
admirable quality a person can possess.
Many of us have the enthusiasm to set goals and come up with plans
to succeed. Only those who strictly persevere in their endeavours will
succeed. Most people stop even before they start or some quit in the
midst of pursuing their dreams. The reasons are mostly fear,
uncertainty, and the negative self-talk, obstructing their way.
Persistence is one of the key secrets to succeed. If you keep on
thinking about your problems, there will be more problems. Instead
of focusing on problems, looking at solutions. If you are struggling or
feel stuck, seek help from coaches, mentors or other resources.

In the past, I was not a confident person, worrying about everything I
do. If I keep focusing on my weaknesses, I would be unaware of many
opportunities to increase my personal value. I would not have the
opportunities to make my first sale and obtain my yoga certificate.
The desire to find solutions to resolve my difficulties and the
persistence on focusing on my objectives allowed me to overcome my
problems. This was how things change when I focused on the
solutions.
Believe in yourself with some certainty. Avoid negative thoughts and
feelings as it will be detrimental to your concentration and
persistence. As long as you are clear with what you want, persistence
and you will eventually reach there. Directing yourself to focus on the
solution can give you a better perspective. Be disciplined and observe
capable you are.

13. Meet positive people
We can be anything we want to be but do not pretend to be someone
you’re not. Everyone has their weaknesses and strengths. Let learn to
express real care, and sincerity by letting down your guard exudes
“Real” confidence. It helps you to accept real association with others.
Look for the loveliness in life, in nature, in people and in yourself.
You can choose what type of people you like to associate with. The
people you associate with will impact on your success journey. If the
people have the same goal as you, your progress towards your goal
will be greater. You will get to socialize more, but remember to join a
group you feel a sense of belonging in and interact with people
authentically. Interact with positive and supportive people.
Of course, you will inevitably interact with people who have thought
different from yours. Nevertheless, if they are positive, optimistic and
truthful to you, and you are also willingly to treat them well. Then

your relationship and reputation with people, such as your family,
friends, colleagues and clients, will attract positive feedback and
affirmation.

14. Be grateful to yourself and others. Accept compliments
appreciatively
When you encounter problems and challenges every day in life, your
anxiety disrupts your peace of mind. Learn some ways to dispel
negative energy and start thinking positively. Let me share with you a
method, so that you know how to express your gratitude for all the
things you have in life which can develop your well-being. Express
your gratitude to what others have given to you which can remind
you to be humble. By showing gratitude, it will interrupt your
negative attention will be shifted from negatively towards calmness
and joy. Give it a try!
By constantly being mindful on what you receive or give to others in
your life is very useful towards improving. You can find love as well as
a smile =) or a helping hand, in a thoughtful gesture. It is all around
you and can be found if you just look for it.

Once you receive compliments from others, show your appreciation.
Previously, I had low self-esteem and I do not like others to give
compliments. Why? I assume they are fake and lying. My responding
was “Yes, ok”, with a nonchalant tone of voice. If you are like me,
please reframe yourself to accept the compliment with appreciatively
“Thank you so much for your compliment,” and offer a sweet smile
“=)” that it will work extremely well. The other party can truly feel
you accept the compliment sincerely.
Do not underestimate the power of gratitude and accept compliment
appreciatively. Expressing gratitude can mean showing a nice smile
or giving a word of thank you or a gesture of appreciation. Every day,
if you grateful for saying from your heart “I’m grateful for....” and
“thank you for….,” is a nice way to start the day and change your
entire attitude towards life.

15. Get enough rest and exercise, take good care and love
yourself
In this era, many of us are busy with a continuous cycle of work, sleep
and carry on work. After a period of time, if your body signal in
protest requiring you to pay attention to its needs, you better do
something about it.
Here are some tips for you to take care yourself before the signal
emerge. It is advisable to do it daily, starting from you are now.
1) In the morning meditate for 10~15 minutes. Breath in and out
slowly from your nostrils it helps to relax your mind.
2) At least exercise three times per week for 20 minutes each time,
exercise does not need to be complicated. Just simple stretching
or take a brisk walk is good enough. The important thing is to
make your body with moving.
3) Drink enough water.

4) Choose nutrition food, requesting less oil and salt. Eat enough
fruits and vegetables.
5) Sleep enough soundly.
Besides, the above basic needs, can be in another form, like listening
to your favourite music, reading your favourite book and doing other
things that you like.
There is evidence indicating that we need to have enough rest,
exercise and eat nutritious food. Take care of yourself is the
foundation of being efficient and confident that a goal can be
accomplished. It is important to maintain a good work-life balance as
you will feel complete and happy this way. Do not neglect your own
needs. Nothing is more important than your own health. Just live
your life well. You must love yourself first if you want to help others
